  1. Maz in Iowa says:

    Poof! A new thread!

  2. scapper says:

Draft day for one of the four major North American sports! I sure hope….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…….

  3. Maz in Iowa says:

In my mind the Pirates need to promote Polanco (hopefully)on this homestand. To do it on the road is a bit of a slap in the face to patient Pirate fans who are part of the unhappiest fan base in the world.

  4. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

They are saying Friday beginning of the series against the Brewers sounds good to me

  5. Maz in Iowa says:

    Not likely.Might be another week

  6. Thundercrack says:

What?! No video on this thread.

  7. Maz in Iowa says:

Careful what you ask for. :)

  8. Cmat0829 says:

I think the question I want “high ranking sources” to answer on polanco is “why not” for Friday? What is wrong with that timing given he has likely cleared super2 and this is a big series vs the first place team. All indications are it will be within a week at the most so why are we waiting now?

  9. Cmat0829 says:

I hope not tho it would make my months-old June 13 prediction correct.

  10. Cmat0829 says:

Not that I agree with it but that may be a factor. Ie promote him on the road so as not to increase the hype and pressure. Again I do not buy jnto that and it isn’t the track record for Huntington but just throwing it out there.

  11. Maz in Iowa says:

You can bet it will be something about having him bat leadoff. However they knew a long time ago that’s where he would be hitting.Management is all about control.Trying to show they don’t/won’t be pushed around by fans/media.Almost a phobia of Huntington

  12. JohninOshkosh says:

Scapper, you are the best. Blog treasure!

  13. Karen22 says:

Oh, horse hockey! I was at Cole’s MLB debut a year ago at PNC and the atmosphere was electric and he delivered for the fans and his team. Polanco should be up tomorrow – he can handle it…and Pittsburgh fans deserve to see his debut up close and in person. No more silly excuses!

  14. Carlos Danger says:

If the fans started blogging that he should stay in AAA for a while longer, maybe then he would get the call?

  15. Brandie says:

Waiting to see who the next big thing the unhappiest fanbase in the world will designate “savior” or “stinks”. Wonder if the Tigers will draft for their bullpen.

  16. Brandie says:

Horse hockey? Sharp words from The Temptress!!

  17. Maz in Iowa says:

Heh heh.I think you might have something there

  18. Brandie says:

Say his name 3 times and he will appear!

  19. Maz in Iowa says:

    Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

  20. Brandie says:

Ya didn’t let me down Maz!

  21. Maz in Iowa says:

Bon Soir Brandie comment allez-vous mon amie

  22. Brandie says:

Ich spreche Deutsch. Es gent Mir gut. Und du?

I speak German. I am well. And you?

  23. The Czar says:

Having Polanco come up and playing over the weekend against the team their chasing, likely creating a stir in the clubhouse and energize the home crowd makes zero sense to me.
I hear his jogs in to the dugout and out to his position are still not crisp and fluid. If he can prove himself then….
Lets wait until after the Brewers sweep us and the Cubs take 2 from us as well.
The good folks in Miami deserve to see him debut on Friday, June 13th.
    Thank you.

  24. Maz in Iowa says:

    Polanco at leadoff for……………………………………………………………….Indy

  25. Maz in Iowa says:

  26. JohninOshkosh says:

    Ear muffs, kids.

  27. Maz in Iowa says:

Daniel Moskos, who was released by the Dodgers, will likely need Tommy John surgery.

  28. Looks like he’ll be paying for it himself.

    Go Bucs!

    Hoard those prospects!

  29. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Draft thread…..

Would love to see Dee Gordon’s brother, but he won’t make to the 24 spot.

  30. Arriba Wilver says:

Rumor has it Polanco was originally scheduled to come up this Friday, but DK’s blog post How the Polanco Narrative Died a Gory Death convinced Huntington that they were doing fine in right field.

  31. Brandie says:

Maybe he can get fundund from Kickstarter if he turns the surgery into a movie.

  32. Brandie says:

    Funding not fundund. Sheesh!

  33. Or the Affordable Care Act, not-so-affectionately known as ______________care.

Truly, I’m sure he has insurance. Smart fellar, from Clemson, right?

  34. Arriba Wilver says:

I hope they go for grit and character.

  35. Brandie says:

Hoarding prospects for when the ice caps completely melt and flood the world…we will be rich with prospects.

  36. Brandie says:

They need to draft Bill Guerin then.

  37. JohninOshkosh says:

No forwards. Or defencemen. I forget which the late great Ray Shero couldn’t draft.

  38. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Ruined by hawk-ey tawk naw

  39. Carlos Danger says:

Just curious – if he is out of baseball, would he still need tommy john? Is it like an injured knee where it would need to be repaired whether you are playing sports or not, or is it just needed for athletes to be able to throw the ball again?

  40. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I have a buddy’s son up for the draft. He’s been negotiating with a few teams, but it’ll cost them. He has a full ride to Clemson

  41. Carlos Danger says:

That’s pretty awesome. What’s his name?

  42. Maz in Iowa says:

This just in:Polanco goes 0-1 in 1st inning vs Syracuse and Huntington declares he is NOW not ready till mid-June of 2015….no matter what 7 billion people say

  43. Maz in Iowa says:

I had a torn rotator cuff (not the same thing of course)and could not raise my arm enough to brush my teeth.Still having a 7 inch scar was small price to get my shoulder back

  44. Brandie says:

The 7 billion that make up the world’s most unhappy fanbase. We need to find peace like Animal in my avatar.

  45. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’ll let you know if he goes….doesn’t sound like he will though.

I’m sure he will eventually, but won’t sign.

  46. Brandie says:

On the other hand, I’d prefer grits and gravy.

  47. Brandie says:

    Or Florence Jean (Flo) Castleberry.

  48. Barb says:

    Kiss my grits.

  49. Barb says:

Just go to your happy place. Ohm……….

  50. Polanco 1-2, BA at .356, OPS .961, 6 HR, 48 RBI

Hitting .429 in June (SSS) only 21 AB’s.

  51. Brandie says:

    And character.

  52. Carlos Danger says:

I can imagine. I have known people who needed shoulder repairs. Just wasn’t sure if tommy john was necessary for is common folk or just to continue professional sports.

  53. Karen22 says:

    Gone at #5…

  54. 21sthebest says:

    Jacob Gatewood still available!

  55. 21sthebest says:

2 of my son’s former teammates may get drafted, one heard from Rich Donnelly of the Mariners today and was told to look for his name which was a surprise. A third buddy, Will Kengor and my son played on the same summer college team. Will went to Slippery Rock and was second in D2 in hitting in 2013 and hit .415 this year. He’s a 6-5 shortstop who had only 9 errors this season and the Twins want to move him to center. He’s being told he might go around the 15th round but he’ll probably go lower because he graduated and has no leverage. And he’s pretty nervous so he asked Junior to go fishing tomorrow afternoon/night to take his mind off of the draft.

  56. The Gunner says:

I had trouble with both of my rotator cuffs, luckily, I didn’t have to do surgery – just physical therapy. I know the pain you refer to, not pleasant.

  57. The Gunner says:

Please please stop torturing all of us. The BMTIB says Polanco is not ready and requires further seasoning, it is sounding like a 2015 ETA.

  58. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Very cool. I knew a couple high school players last year as well, but both chose to go to college, including one to Oregon State.

  59. Reading says:

And the Pirates select … John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

  60. Dadtackular says:

Wow! His name is my name too!

  61. Maz in Iowa says:

Really really really really really really really really really really really really really slow night on the blog……and that’s an understatement

  62. Reading says:

Currently tracking a Greyhound bus from both Indy and Syracuse (since I’m not sure where Polanco is).

  63. 21sthebest says:

MLB invited 10 players to the draft. They’re through 22 picks and 3 have been selected.

  64. Dadtackular says:

It’s so slow it takes an hour and a half to watch an episode of “60 Minutes”.

  65. He just singled, stole second and scored for Indy.

    2-4 on the night.

  66. All the way from Syracuse.

  67. Maz in Iowa says:

    S-t-a-l-k-e………can I have an “r” Pat? :)

  68. Arriba Wilver says:

Is it true that Johnny Manziel is one of the ten? ;-)

  69. Thundercrack says:

    FREE Cole Tucker!!!

  70. Dadtackular says:

    Cole Tucker… Come on down!!!

  71. Round 1, pick 24
Tucker, Cole Mountain Pointe HS (AZ) SS S/R HS
    6’3″ 185lbs DOB: 07/03/96

    Bucs first-round pick.

  72. Milo Hamilton says:

Pirates take Arizona high school shortstop Cole Tucker with the 24th pick. Baseball America has him ranked #84.

  73. Wild Bill says:

Draft gurus not impressed, hope they’re wrong.

  74. DJ says:

    Bernie Kosar to the Bucs.

  75. DJ says:

    . . . or Colby Armstrong.

  76. Maz in Iowa says:

    So much for BPA

  77. chethejet1 says:

He looks like he will give Mario Mendoza a run for his money. Well at least he plays a position that is basically barren in the system.

  78. Maz in Iowa says:

Np more crap about best player. This is a huge reach

  79. chris says:

gatewood was there, we don’t only need a shortstop we need a shortstop who can hit. This player could have been had with the 39th pick or even later. This is another chase d’araund, tony sanchez pick. This front office is horrible, we need a damn hitter not a lanky looking version of clint barmes

  80. Wild Bill says:

SI has a draft tracker with info on all the picks – except for Tucker. They weren’t expecting him.

  81. Maz in Iowa says:

    I’ve read he was anywhere from a late 2nd to a late 3rd round pick.6’3″ 170 lbs.Slender athletic

  82. 21sthebest says:

Everyone is passing on Gatewood. Red Sox took a shortstop.

  83. Maz in Iowa says:

He’s got to be a very cheap draft pick. They should sign him very quickly

  84. Carlos Danger says:

That’s awesome. I feel like we are the raiders from every nfl draft.

  85. chethejet1 says:

Maybe they are looking to pick up better prospects who may have priced themselves out of a selection that the Pirates with the additional money from the Marlins. I have to think this pick will sign a happy to be here amount.

  86. Wild Bill says:

Now they finally have something up, mostly about his “physical projection”. Means he hasn’t done much yet.

  87. 21sthebest says:

@JoeStarkey1: Sources say Cole Tucker will arrive in Pittsburgh on June 20, 2029, at which time he’ll replace 55-year-old Clint Barmes

  88. 21sthebest says:

  89. Wild Bill says:

    Joe Snarky?

  90. Maz in Iowa says:

Sounds like a thinner version of Mercer with little power.Avg arm….not that fast and will lose a step as he picks up weight.Won’t be 18 till next month

  91. Thundercrack says:

Remember the bright side: we were picking 24th

  92. Milo Hamilton says:

So they love his defense but his hitting needs work. I remember the last time they said that.

  93. JohninOshkosh says:

Anybody know who is his agent ?

Only sport in the world where it’s important to know who a guy’s lawyer is.

  94. DJ says:

Maybe the pick takes everyone’s minds off Polanco for a day.

  95. chethejet1 says:

Passed on Monte Harrison for this guy? Why not take the best player and have an option to trade him if he develops down the road? Oh that’s right, NH doesn’t trade his over valued prospects for a big time player.

  96. DJ says:

Hope we’re not shooting for a Boras trifecta.

  97. DJ says:

This has a Danny Moskos feel to it.

We’re smarter than all other clubs.

  98. Thundercrack says:

I love the pick. I had him much higher on my mock draft boards.

Great projectables, defense, offense, signability, smart kid, potential for future bobblehead,

  99. Maz in Iowa says:

Yeah…..except this guy was generally looked at as a late 2nd or late 3rd pick.Glad to be wrong, but we were spoon fed the “best player available” soup and in this case it’s more generic and not so gourmet. :)

  100. Maz in Iowa says:

OK on to the comp pick(crosses fingers and prays silently)

  101. DJ says:

Maybe he’s the Ray’s targeted chip for the soon-to-be Price deal.

    Or maybe not.

  102. Maz in Iowa says:

Bet he’s signed in the next 10-12 days

  103. DJ says:

On the bobblehead, extra plaster for the hair.

Not sure Nutting will spring for it.

  104. Reading says:

Consecutive run of Baseball America Championships could be in jeopardy.

  105. DJ says:

I bet he’s in Pittsburgh before Polanco.

  106. In other prospect news, Josh Bell went 5-5 tonight for High-A Bradenton. Now hitting .315 with 34 RBI. Should be a promo to Altoona in the offing.

  107. Reading says:

“Um, Maverick. While you were messing around with the enemy Mig, who was covering Cougar’s wing?”

  108. Reading says:

    Or to Tampa.

  109. Maz in Iowa says:

Polanco only 2 hits and a SB

  110. Reading says:

    “Maverick’s disengaging, Sir!” “&%$#@*&%$@!$%& Maverick!!!!!”

  111. Maz in Iowa says:

    Another Wirfin sighting too

  112. 21sthebest says:

    Supplemental round begins.

    No first baseman selected yet!

  113. He wirfed a grand slam to a .182 hitter, which cost the game.

Sounds like a Sept. call-up to me.

  114. DJ says:

Saw a lot of comments today about trading Meadows or Bell because of our “surplus” of outfield talent.

I keep at least one — if not both if Bell realistically projects to 1B — until we know what we’ve got in Marte.

  115. I would hope that the Pirates’ draftees will fill the positions that have so long needed to. be fiiled since they’ve had enough glaring weaknesses that have so long needed attentiob.

  116. 21sthebest says:

36 picks completed and 6 kids in their suits still sitting undrafted.

  117. Thundercrack says:

I thought Baseball Tonight on ESPN was supposed to be a draft special.

    They aren’t showing the picks

  118. Reading says:

With the 39th pick in the MLB Draft, the Pirates select … Kelly Leak, OF, Rio Linda Bears.

  119. Arriba Wilver says:

You may have solved the mystery why they picked him. ##24-83 were Boras’ clients.

  120. +++++++++++

Now you and I are admitted to Jim’s group. Jim S. and the Prospect Lovers.

  121. 21sthebest says:

  122. Reading says:

Back to being serious, the Pirates must draft somebody with “grit and character.”

  123. Maz in Iowa says:

Joe, Connor University of San Diego (CA) OF R/R JR 6’0″ 205lbs DOB: 08/16/92

  124. 21sthebest says:

You just missed Jack Wilson announcing the pick.

  125. Also a catcher in his spare time.

  126. Arriba Wilver says:

Knowing MLB, they probably won’t let them. They know how to protect their brand.

I wonder if the draft is blacked out in New Jersey.

  127. DJ says:

Guess this seals the fate of Tony Sanchez sticking as a back-up catcher.

  128. Thundercrack says:

Hasn’t this FO been paying attention to our starting rotation?!
    Draft some pitchers!!!!
    We have a need!!!

  129. chethejet1 says:

Conner Joe. Hey Joe, where you going with that bat in your hand? Scout from West coast must have spent some time in Oregon eating those special cookies.

  130. Thundercrack says:

I am watching in a room that has a tv that does not get that channel

  131. Thundercrack says:

They don’t even have the picks scrolling at the bottom of the bottom of the screen

  132. Milo Hamilton says:

    Conner Joe what ?

  133. Mirosurabu says:

The Pirates drafted Cold Turkey and Cottoneye Joe?

  134. Maz in Iowa says:

    Pretty quiet out there

  135. DJ says:

Saw that — the Prospect Hoarders.

Could be awhile before we get guys like Meadows and Bell in the system again. And given our first two picks tonight, could be even longer than anyone imagines. Want to see how Marte performs through balance of this year before I trade either of those two.

  136. Bizrow says:

    Not much to say;-)

  137. DJ says:

Glad I could help, AW. Now you’ll need to explain how.

    Type slowly.

  138. DJ says:

    Quiet, please.

Your BMTIB needs to maintain its laser-like focus.

  139. Playoffs by 2012 says:

I’m calling it right now. Pick #64 is Sonja Henie.

  140. DJ says:

Neal: Whadya mean we have our board in reverse?!

    Frank: Oops.

  141. theplanisworking says:

Glad to see the Pirates picked Tony Sanchez the second with the top pick tonight.
#24 pick, projected to be #82 pick.

Best available my ample (-70 pound) rear !

Honestly, don’t know anything about the kid, but why pick someone projected in the 3rd round with your first round pick?

    Hoka Who?

  142. Andrew says:

I used to think hardcore political partisans were the most irrational group of people, but watching some of the reactions to this Pirates draft and I have to say that spot is now occupied by people with strong emotional reactions to the baseball draft.

  143. Patrick(ri) says:

Must have been in some sort of haze, with this selection?

  144. Playoffs by 2012 says:

  145. theplanisworking says:

Andrew, who did the picking tonight?

President Obama, or Pierre McGuire? ;)

  146. Maz in Iowa says:

Keller, Mitch Xavier HS (IA) RHP R/R HS 6’3″ 195lbs DOB: 04/04/96

  147. Maz in Iowa says:

This kid is about 60 miles away from me

  148. Andrew says:

    Homer Simpson for Sanitation Commissioner.

    “Can’t someone else do it”

  149. DJ says:

“Mitch Keller is a 2014 RHP with a 6-3 200 lb. frame from Cedar Rapids, IA who attends Xavier HS. Big strong athletic body. Easy arm action with a low effort online delivery. Ball comes out of hand clean and with life. Continued to show plus curveball spin and bite. Challenged hitters mostly with fastballs and mixed in 1 change up that has continued to develop through out the spring. Has two current plus pitches with fastball and curveball. Named to Top Prospect List. Signed with North Carolina. Outstanding Student.”

Smart is always a good start.

  150. theplanisworking says:

  151. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Bono: “Hold on folks. The man’s talking about waste management, that effects the whole damn planet!”

  152. Maz in Iowa says:

Supak, Trey La Grange HS (TX) RHP R/R HS 6’5″ 210lbs DOB: 05/31/96

  153. Maz in Iowa says:

LaGrange (Texas) High hasn’t had a player drafted since the Reds selected Homer Bailey seventh overall in 2004. That will change this June, as Supak figures to go in the second or third round. His present stuff is solid, and scouts love his projectability, makeup and bloodlines. Supak already throws 88-92 mph, and he’s still filling out his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, with his 18th birthday a week before the Draft. His fastball is more notable for its angle than its life. He has a feel for spinning the ball but needs to add more power to his curve. He also could use more deceptive arm speed with his changeup, though it has some promising fade. Supak has a loose arm that works well, and he could have three solid or better pitches once he gets stronger and maintains a consistent arm slot

  154. Cobra39 says:

    Downward plane!
