  1. The Gunner says:

Tonight the Bucs need to take this series. Volquez needs to go deeper into this game – can we get 7 innings out of Edinson tonight??

  2. Nate83 says:

I see that Davis is still batting 4th tonight. Jim mentioned on DK’s blog he thought Pedro is heating up and I agree. Move him up to clean up. I don’t think the spot he bats in the line up effects his hot and cold streaks. He’s a streaky hitter and they need to stop chasing those streaks like they have his entire career. He’s cold for 3 weeks and they move him down to 6. Then he gets hot for 10 games and they move him up just in time for him to cool off.

Just leave him alone and enjoy the hot streaks. When he has them they will score 6,7,8 runs per game. When he’s cold just hope others in the line up pick up the slack. When he is going he is easily the best player on the team to be batting 4th. Stop missing 80% of those games by guessing when it may happen.

  3. TCB says:

Maybe they are trying to get Davis’ bat going by having him hit after Cutch and before Martin instead of after Martin and before Mercer. (not that line-up protection works – sarcasm alert).

  4. Tom P. says:

A player for Brazil just kicked the ball into his own net 11 minutes into the first game of the World Cup. One of the things that makes sports fun is that it is played by people who are very good, but still less than perfect. Thus, you get unpredictable events and results.

  5. Nate83 says:

I just read a Joe Starky column on the Penguins 5 year plunge. Very good read. I just wanted to say as much as I enjoy DK’s work Starkey’s is equal to being just as enjoyable to read. The Tribune and us readers are very fortunate to have two top notch columnist anchoring their sports section.

  6. NMR says:

    Beautiful, Nate.

  7. NMR says:

Edinson Volquez is the most exciting pitcher in the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation.

    Let that sink in.

  8. Lad 9 says:

Lets go for the series win tonight. Lets go Busc!

  9. NMR says:

Note the deafening silence from all the lineup protection believers who were crowing so loudly about Pedro being the reason Cutch “wasn’t seeing any pitches to hit”.

Not that facts will change their minds at this point.

  10. Bizrow says:

    Thanks, as per usual, Lad.

This is posted Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

  12. Every time he pitches, Pirates are figuratively if not literally running through the raindrops.

  13. Because Ike Davis is so much more protection than Pedro was.

I will continue to repeat what I have been saying since November: Pirates need a Clean-up hitter to bat after McCutch.

McCutch walked again twice last night. I prefer his being able to swing the bat rather than stroll to 1st.

  14. Oshkosh b’Gosh,

I read an article this afternoon where Jabari Parker said he would be really excited to go to the Milwaukee Bucks #2 in the draft.

    Good luck!

  15. NMR says:

Groat, Ike Davis hasn’t hit for three years.

Nobody is throwing Cutch more pitches because Ike Davis is batting behind him, and yet look at the results.

It’s a myth. A fallacy. And only blind ignorance cannot see that.

  16. War_Horse says:

I fail to see the wisdom of keeping your clean-up hitter in the same place in the line-up when he is quite clearly in a slump. Pedro starting hitting well again (.371 in his last 10 games) when he was demoted to #6. And Ike filled in fairly well. Let us stop trying to out-think the manager and his staff.

  17. National Mart of Records,

I’m disappointed that you think me so ignorant to think I adjudge Ike Davis is good. It was a farcical statement.

I was sure that my 2nd and 3rd paragraphs would make that interpretation clear to you.

Pirates NEED a hitter to bat behind McCutch!

  18. JRay3 says:

Casey Sadler optioned back to Indy, Michael Martinez called up.

  19. War_Horse says:

I watched that goal and it seemed less like he kicked it in his own net than it was an opponent’s shot that deflected off his foot, which was outstretched anyway.

  20. There goes Casey’s start over the weekend.

Welcome to the starting rotation, Stolmy Pimental!

  21. Nate83 says:

Sadler not an option to start on Sunday. So Stolmy or dare I say Gomez are the options. I guess Martinez is up to protect against injury or replace Barmes/Mercer in field in case of late inning PH situation.

  22. Brandie says:

    The Love Groat,

I would welcome Stolmy if he is indeed pitching like his a*# is on fire. The hitting, for the most part, is coming around. However Polanco and what he brings to the picnic does not matter if the defense (fielders and pitching) does not right itself. Also, let’s tighten up the base running.

  23. Nate83 says:

Ike was 0-22 at one point. My entire point was Pedro would have batted .371 regardless. If we can’t try to out-think the manager then we need to stop having a blog because there would be nothing to discuss or complain about :)

  24. Brandie says:

  25. And I feel as comfortable with him on the mound as any starter with the exception of Cole, Charlie included.

  26. Brandie Big Bucks.

    Business mogal extroidinaire.

  27. Brandie says:

Then you better grab your favorites Teddy bear or security blanket. I just hope it doesn’t get too hairy Revvie.

  28. No, he’s up because he’s better than Morel, Andino, d’Arnaud, et al. (That’s a joke, son)

  29. Brandie says:

Plucky Lucky that sounds just Ducky.

  30. What, 5 innings, 3 runs, two of them solo homers? You know what you get with him, anyway.

Plus, everyone says he’s a nice guy. What more can we want?

  31. Any more raises and you’ll be in 6 figures like Dejan.

  32. cmat0829 says:

I agree with both perspectives, if that is even possible. I do think too much was made of Pedro singlehandedly the cause of a frustrating stretch for Cutch… and I’ve heard it said just as often that getting runners on AHEAD of a hitter is as much protection as who hits behind him.

that said, when Pedro was moved from 4th to 6th was when Pedro was in the middle of a very frustrating stretch where he just looked lost… sometimes managers make moves just to change things up and it seemed to work so they stuck with it.

the issue now is that Ike is stinking it up… have no problem with swapping Pedro for Ike…nor would I have a problem with playing Gaby a solid week or so at cleanup…nor would I have an issue with batting Martin cleanup and Pedro 5th…

I think in this lineup configuration, the player I would put cleanup, when he’s back, is Neil.

By the way, last point on Ike… noticed in MLB TradeRumors last week that Kendrys Morales had narrowed it down to the Twins and Pirates before signing with Minnesota… was interesting to me that the Pirates were still pursuing him after having traded for Ike…. though I do remember after Ike was acquired, I think I heard it said that the Pirates weren’t necessarily done trying to upgrade at 1B.

  33. Jim S. says:

  34. cmat0829 says:

YES> like Cutch in his hot streak, sometimes you don’t “OVERTHINK IT”… Clint saw that Pedro was really scuffling and looking hopeless and he made a change and rolled the dice. It worked, though I’m sure it had nothing to do with it, or maybe it did. No one really knows. But baseball is full of that type of stuff… you make moves sometimes to ‘shake things up’ and if it works (or seems to work) you keep it that way.

  35. Mike Shigley says:

Yikes. He is batting .229 for Indianapolis. The last three years in the majors he never batted above .200.

  36. Jim S. says:

I think this is where we all forget Kendrys Morales can’t handle 1b defensively and start to say he is the slam dunk answer to all our problems.

  37. cmat0829 says:

Casey was not gonna stay up here regardless I don’t think. My gut says that it was gonna be Mazarro time anyway…. but this to me indicates that JayHey hopes to avoid the DL, which would be welcome news. So you bring up Martinez as insurance to injury for a couple of days, Worley comes up and replaces Martinez for Sunday’s start. Or if they go with Pimentel, then Mazarros comes up and replaces Martinez.

  38. Dom says:

Happy five year anniversary of the Pens winning the cup.

  39. cmat0829 says:

he’s not up here to hit. he’s up here simply to play defense in a PH situation or more likely in case of injury. nothing to see here, keep moving.

  40. cmat0829 says:

not me… but it did raise my eyebrows, that if that report is accurate, the PIRATES thought that Kendrys would be an option to play 1B for us.

  41. Arriba Wilver says:

I thought it was funny towards the beginning of the season and people were ” upset” that Edinson was our “ace”‘at the time. I think his ERA at that point was still under 2.

Name on the back of the shirt.

  42. Maz in Iowa says:

Can’t seem to find Pedro’s batting w/RISP.Last time time I saw it…it was .203.Why would you want him to bat cleanup? It actually would drag his batting avg down, let alone he just can’t produce in the clutch at this stage of his career. Not sure who to put there, but almost anyone would be better.Maybe Rumar.JMO

  43. cmat0829 says:

Gomez has also suffered the “this is 2014, we’re not in 2013 anymore” plunge that has plagued the rotation… last year, we would welcome a Gomez spot start, he routinely stepped up HUGE in those situations and was a big part of the great first half…. but this year’s version is elevating the pitches and that will continue to be ugly at best.

unless Ray thinks he can get Gomez to ‘get it down’ then we are best served with Mazarro…

  44. Brandie says:

How about a complete game? (Shyly slinks away) ;)

  45. Not better than Chase d’Arnaud!!!!!!!!

  46. cmat0829 says:

24/7 is a busy bird TWEETING up a storm today…

GOOD NEWS – JAY HEY is available off bench tonight, NOT going on DL. So Martinez may not be going to Miami after all. In that case, maybe Mazarro will be.

NO starter named for Sunday nor would I expect it before, say, Saturday. Though you will be able to deduce if Pimentel is in line for that based on if or how he is used. Same with Worley.

  47. Brandie says:

With that raise comes a promotion to Human Resource Manager as well as Project Manager and Big Chief Muppet. I am prepared to earn every penny so I can blog with a relaxed mind.

  48. Brandie says:

Chase D’Arnaud can do no wrong! ;)

  49. cmat0829 says:

playing 3 infielder and just having them spread out is better than Chase d’Arnuad. Put both A’rnaud brothers together and you MIGHT have 3/4 of a big leaguer. How do you say SUCKS in French?

  50. Leave Pedro at #6. When he is in his 10-day hitting stretch, he drives in runs from there.

When he is in his 4 week non-hitting stretch, he doesn’t have guys pitching around McCutch to get to him.

  51. Brandie says:

The divorce from further championships has been quite ugly.

  52. Brandie says:

Go Groat Go! You are on today!

  53. Maz in Iowa says:

When you’re right, you’re right.Petey is hitting better since they dropped him.

  54. Dom says:

Not quite as bad as Paul McCartney’s divorce. He’s paying out the caboose on that one.

  55. Maz in Iowa says:

Nice that Walker will be in the dugout and traveling with the team.

  56. Maz in Iowa says:

  57. cmat0829 says:

I have no complaints about Mr. Volquez. He has given us league average back end of the rotation efforts with glimpses of being better than that. Far cry from Jonny Sanchez, but also far cry from Frankie 2013. But I have no complaints. rather have volquez than the shadow of Josh Johnson right about now. and no, this is not an invitation to compare having AJB with having volquez. been there, done that, have the free-T-shirt Friday.

  58. Reading says:

So, if nobody is capable of providing protection for Cutch, and Cutch generally heats up in June, then why is Cutch suddenly seeing better pitches to hit? Or is Cutch just so good that he now crushes so-called “Pitcher’s Pitches”?

  59. cmat0829 says:

yes, and he doesn’t have that pesky appendix weighing him down! glad to hear he’s chomping at the bit to get back out there…though don’t expect him before july 4

  60. Brandie says:

The unconscious liberating of scads and scads of cash for little to no return? Sounds like the Pens and McCartney have lots in common.

  61. Wild Bill says:

Section 142 in right field bleachers tonight and hoping Alvarez or Davis hit one to us in row D. No Rizzo or Valbuena shots allowed.

  62. toochca says:

  63. Crematorium,

They were pitching around McCutch with runners on first and third! Runners on AHEAD do not protect the best hitters like Bonds, Joey Votto, Cabrera.

The only way runners on base before McCutch “protects” him this year is if the bases are loaded!

  64. Brandie says:

You are in charge oh Untamed William. You better get “Natural” on any ball coming that way unless tattooed by a Bucco!

  65. Brandie says:

    Goody toochca.

  66. Huntington said on his show on Sunday when asked, that the Pirates looked at but did not consider seriously Stephen Drew or Kendrys Morales, before they signed elsewhere. I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I think he said something about “not a good fit.”

  67. Brandie says:

    Oozing Mendoza.

  68. Fine Girl,

That’s why I love you! And it takes a Human Resources Manager to recognize Chase’s good qualities.

  69. Bizrow says:

    So JHay is dinged up?

  70. Maz in Iowa says:

I’m guessing they(Hurdle) are trying to jumpstart Marte(he who is prone to one baserunning gaffe/game).Good luck

  71. Big Ben played 11 days after his appendectomy.

Of course, with that superior offensive line last year, football is much easier than baseball.

  72. You are going to be calling me, begging for tickets, when Chase d’Arnaud gets inducted into the Hall of Fame!

  73. The Gunner says:

I knew I could count on your input about our boy Edinson, NMR. I see Polanco is leading off tonight.

  74. Andrew says:

“Getting specific pitches to hit — more fastballs — or more central part of the strike zone pitches, and I haven’t experienced that in 12 years. The priority of the pitcher is to make outs and the priority of the hitter is to not make outs and that doesn’t change a ton with regard to the hitter in the on-deck circle. The best lineup protection is when Billy Hamilton is on base in front of me, and it’s not about protection, it’s that I get a more predictable pitch to hit — fastball.” — Joey Votto.

  75. 4 ABs last night——2 hits, 2 walks. He is hitting whatever pitch he wants.

  76. Twisted his ankle returning to 1st base last night. Left game 2 innings later.

  77. Wild Bill says:

Don’t know about natural , but I’ll get Wild for sure .

  78. “it’s not about protection, it’s that I get a more predictable pitch to hit — fastball.” — Joey Votto.

  79. Andrew says:

Gomez was never very good, he can be almost serviceable when not walking batters, but his great spot starts last year were propelled by a BABIP around .200.

Mazzaro, Hughes, Bryan Morris, are all about the same pitcher, they look okay when the ground balls are finding gloves, and look terrible when they don’t. I really don’t have a preference.

  80. Andrew says:

Hurdle said: He is not a candidate for the disabled list, and is “possible” for coming off the bench tonight.

  81. I don’t wanna say I told you so, but I told you so.

    So did Jandelita.

  82. Andrew says:

“I love the two guys behind me, Brandon and Jay…I’ve had a lot of guys in the minor leagues hit behind me and have better seasons than I did. Jay Bruce did that in the minors and was far and away better than me. I never really noticed different quality pitches for the most part and that I was pitched roughly the same. Billy changes that..Billy changes that. I told him last year, “You’re the first person that has ever protected me. In that, by definition, protection should be giving me an opportunity to see better pitches during my at bat. ” —Joey Votto.

  83. Maz in Iowa says:

3-1 odds Marte with a….. ”doh”…. moment on the bases

  84. JAL says:

Still betting Worley gets the Sunday start

  85. Flbucco says:

This Marte bashing is getting really old – the “gaffe” was Hurdle’s – not Marte’s last night

Let’s talk about the great trade the FO made for the solution to the first base problem…

  86. War_Horse says:

Including, of course, complaints about complaints. :-)

  87. Flbucco says:

    Tiresome – move on..,.

  88. Flbucco says:

    Tiresome – move on..,.

  89. Maz in Iowa says:

    Tiresome – move on…..AGAIN?

  90. Karen22 says:

  91. Bizrow says:

Thanks, I knew he left the game but did not know how bad it was or what was hurting

    Good news

  92. Bizrow says:

Yes, I think you are right.

He will need added to the 40 man, do we have any openings?

  93. The Gunner says:

I am pretty sure there is one slot open on the 40 man

  94. Brandie says:

  95. I think he’ll do well. More confidence in him than Volquez.

  96. Brandie says:

The faith of Lucky and Jandee sustained me. I cannot thank you both and all of the others who offered shoulders and encouragement enough.

  97. Brandie says:

    Seconded Temptress!!

  98. Brandie says:

(Blushing) Thanks The Love Groat. :)

  99. Bizrow says:

Gunner, meant to tell you, a couple of days ago, they did spot a bear crossing a street in Lebo

    Conner Road

  100. Chuck H says:

Why is Davis still batting cleanup? I can think of at least 6 other guys who would be better in that spot, a couple of pitchers included. GO, BUCS!!!

  101. Bizrow says:

Was Martinez on the 40 man?

  102. Brandie says:

I like your focus on the upside. Sometimes it’s better to concentrate on the upside to get one on the path of success!

  103. Brandie says:

So Barmey Miller is in at second for J Hay. Need good defense.

  104. Cmat0829 says:

    Right after Alex Presley

  105. I am SO unlucky!

Last night I am home watching on TV, and Tim “I talk about everything but the game” Neveritt was the announcer.
Tonight I am listening on radio for first 2 hours——guess who the radio announcer is?!?!

  106. Cmat0829 says:

I’m too tired to move on

  107. Cmat0829 says:

Goggle giveaway night for his first home start!!

  108. Brandie says:

Sorry man, but you are in better shape than Emilio Bonifacio.

  109. casper in a-town says:

Stinks being you, Maz. But to be honest, I’d rather have Timmy talking about anything but the game. Lord knows he butchers anything game-related.

  110. Brandie says:

Great play by Barmey. Very observant.

  111. The Gunner says:

I saw it on the news later in the evening. It’s a little too close for comfort. They interviewed the police chief and he assured everyone not to be alarmed “because the bear won’t attack you.”

  112. Brandie says:

    Beer Googles?

  113. casper in a-town says:

Forget the fact that Cutch just struck out. His body language during that at-bat was indicative of a guy who is confident and having fun at the plate. I loved it.

  114. Brandie says:

44th anniversary of the Dock Ellis Hippie Trippy blanking of the San Diego Padres. There is just no way to celebrate that one.

  115. Another big game for Josh Bell in the first game of a DH. 2-3, 9th HR, 42nd RBI, BA up to .318

Glasnow 5 scoreless in the same game.

    FREE JOSH BELL to Altoona!

  116. Brandie says:

And the defensive stylings of Pedro Alvarez continue…one excellent play followed by a what was he thinking type throw.

  117. casper in a-town says:

Well good evening, Yankee Doodle Brandie!

  118. Brandie says:

    Is #prospectlove like Muskrats Love?

  119. Brandie says:

Captain Casper!!! Been a long time.

  120. It is. And I missed it. He was 3-4 in the first game with the game-winning hit and 3 RBI’s. Mercy, the lad is hot.

  121. casper in a-town says:

I hear ya! Work travel is keeping me busy. Finally have a night when I can sit down in the man cave, watch the game and follow the blog. Hope all is well.

  122. Andrew says:

Volquez has given up a few hard hit balls, tonight. But he seems to be finding the zone.

  123. piratemike says:

What is more painful ? …. listening to Greg Brown and Steve Blass or watching Pedro try to play MLB?

  124. Russell Martin just hit a ball that short-hopped the wall.

Guess how Tim Neveritt called it?!

  125. Andrew says:

    Like a fly out?

  126. I like watching Pedro . . . . you cannot take any play for granted. He takes away doubles; he turns routine outs into doubles. That is the definition of excitement.

  127. Umps twirling their hand.

  128. Brandie says:

Sizzling and intriguing. Cannot wait to hear / see more.

  129. piratemike says:

Yeah. and sometimes vomiting is good for you.

  130. Brandie says:

    Emergency appendectomy.

  131. Brandie says:

I have been busy with work as well. Good to see you.

  132. Brandie says:

Junior Lake sounds like a place kids go to over the summer.

  133. Arriba Wilver says:

Probably be right behind d’Arnaud on his way to the HOF.

  134. Florida Steeler says:

    great base running again.

  135. The Gunner says:

They just showed Barmes @ 2B. His face is red as a beet, hope he doesn’t take the big one out there!

  136. cherokee23 says:

Not a big deal, just a thought. If mercer and Barmes are both gonna play, and SS is considered more important defensively, and Barmes is considered better defensively…..why mercer at short & Barmes at 2nd?

  137. Lad 9 says:

    You are very welcome.

  138. Lad 9 says:

  139. Patrick(ri) says:

Look there. A Sacrifice Fly sighting!

  140. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Barmes has played 2nd. I don’t think Jordy has much time there.

  141. JRay3 says:

Mercer does the job with a sac fly and now Buccos getting aggressive on the bases.

Nice to see them strike on Samardjiza early.

Volquez continues to deal for Pittsburgh starting to chalk that one up to a very good NH signing.

  142. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    2 things:

    1. Samardzija would look good in a Pirates uniform

    2. Russell Martin needs to be re-signed.

  143. Lad 9 says:

Brandie, so very proud of you! Human Resouces should be perfect for you. Awesome girl!

  144. JRay3 says:

#2 – will be the biggest story line of this off season. And for me a true opportunity for management to show the fan base it is serious about winning and understands the window it has.

  145. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

ESPN has a good write up about it.

    Highly recommend a read

  146. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  147. Lad 9 says:

Ryan, agree on both. Don’t think we have a prayer of #1, but #2 should be a no brainer. I don’t say a lot about the spending of the Pirates, but that is one case where they need to open up the wallet.

  148. JRay3 says:

Volquez throwing some filthy pitches to get Lake and gets out of the inning stranding two in scoring position.

Curve and change playing very well for him. Dealing.

  149. JRay3 says:

Hey the rookie with a 3 game hitting streak in his first three games as a pro.

  150. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I won’t say that there isn’t a prayer for #1, but it will be a stretch.

I would rather have David Price though. Toouch money for him.

  151. JRay3 says:

I said it last night but it bears repeating…Cutch is in a zone!

  152. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

FWIW, love the Polanco, Marte, Cutch order.

Would love it even more if there was a hot hitting Pedro behind Cutch.

  153. TJA says:

You beat me to it, Ryan. Was just thinking the same thing. All that speed…wow…

  154. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Agree. No better time for him to get hot.

That’s also why I like the speed in front of him

  155. casper in a-town says:

And I’ll reiterate what I said earlier tonight right after he struck out in his first at-bat. His body language is that of a man with tremendous confidence. He’s feeling it and having fun. And it is obvious.

  156. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Those 2 in front of the best hitter on the team?

    Yes please

  157. TJA says:

Best catcher in a Bucs uniform in years.

  158. casper in a-town says:

Sorry. That was supposed to be a reply to JRay. Still learning the blog buttons!

  159. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Possibly ever.

  160. Andrew says:

    Jason Kendall.

  161. TJA says:

  162. Patrick(ri) says:

Good to be a star. If Marte or Tabata or most of the rest of the guys had been caught celebrating all hell would break loose.

  163. Patrick(ri) says:

Test this Valbeuna guy for PEDs. Looks like Ted Williams this series.

  164. Andrew says:

    I had the same thought.

  165. JRay3 says:

Also good to be a guy carrying a team on its back, think he can be forgiven for momentum carrying him off bag after 2 RBI triple.

  166. TJA says:

Ok…Kendall was pretty good…give you that, Andrew. But, what Martin has done for this team and his pitchers the past couple seasons…that is pretty special.

    My favorite is still Manny.

  167. The Gunner says:

Big Ed gave us 6 great innings tonight – super job!

  168. JRay3 says:

Edinson with six shutout innings and had out pitched the likes of Greinke and Samardzija in his past couple of starts .

    Not too bad.

  169. The Gunner says:

I agree on both of your proposals. It is time for Nutsack to pony up!!

  170. Reading says:

Last inning wad great. Whap (line shot single up the middle). Whap (line shot single to left). KA BOOOOOOOM!! (gap shot triple to left center)!

  171. Patrick(ri) says:

Agreed, but I believe he had already overcome the momentum. No nig deal.

  172. Patrick(ri) says:

    Big, deal jeez.

  173. The Gunner says:

Manny was a very good catcher in his prime (& a horrible baserunner).

Don’t forget about Tony Pena – he could hold his own with the best of them!

  174. The Gunner says:

Uh oh, Patrick – gotta really start proof reading those posts!

  175. DJ says:

Like the Polanco, Marte, Cutch order as well.

Apt to keep Marte engaged and focused.

  176. Patrick(ri) says:

Error rate jumps when I use the Mini. One of my worst?

  177. TJA says:

Just looking at the schedule and thinking that the Bucs need to get to .500 soon. The schedule is in their favor as the month rolls forward. Good chance to make a move before the 4th of July.

  178. JRay3 says:

Marte gets into the highlight reel OF catches.

Boy is this dream OF going to be a lot of fun to watch for many years to come.

  179. DJ says:

    EV making it look EZ.

  180. TJA says:

MARTE DRIVES ME NUTS…and yes I am shouting this. bonehead on bases….great catch.

  181. DJ says:

Maybe his nickname should be Pond.

  182. TJA says:

indeed, Gunner. Tony had a gun of an arm.

  183. JRay3 says:

Ok who had Volquez not only going 7 innings but 7 shutout innings?

  184. Patrick(ri) says:

Great to see the starters developing some swagger and having some fun.

  185. JRay3 says:

And doing it for 11M less than AJ.

  186. The Gunner says:

7 great innings by Big Ed. Keep it coming, my man – way to step up!!!!!

  187. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

  188. JRay3 says:

At this rate with reclamation projects, Ray Searage is going to have a statue erected.

  189. DJ says:

    Greed . . . I mean agreed.

  190. TJA says:

    His manager and pitching coach…

  191. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Though he has a shut out going , that’s probably the end of the road for EV. He’s at 98 pitches and this BP is on lock down.

Great outing. Got his ERA below 4 and hopefully his 4th win of the season

  192. The Gunner says:

NH looks pretty good on this signing. The Bucs are getting more production from EV than they would have gotten from #34 and saved $11 million to boot!

  193. TJA says:

  194. JRay3 says:

Travis Snider continues to produce in the PH role.

    Decisions when Walker is activated.

  195. JRay3 says:

    Well played

  196. DJ says:

    They have Kiner’s floating hands.

    How ’bout a floating ‘stache?

  197. Baywatch says:

“The Courtship Of Edinson Volquez,” by Ray Searage

  198. TJA says:

…and maybe Hurdle, too. The way April was…this is a pretty good turnaround thus far into June.

  199. Andrew says:

Agreed, I have such an appreciation for Martin because of the few catchers who came before him, all of who ranged from underwhelming to terrible. Still going with Kendall though, the man could hit.

  200. TJA says:

    A nice problem to have…

  201. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

So speaking of reclamation projects, how about bringing Trevor Cahill in for Ray to work his magic.

He’s struggled a lot recently, but was a very good pitcher with Oakland.

  202. Patrick(ri) says:

Are there any AL teams overstocked with pitchers looking for a lefty designated hitter? Snider’s pinch hitting has been awesome.

  203. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

TS will NOT bring in any sustainable return.

Sounds good, but don’t get your hopes up

  204. Andrew says:

He was absolved on the spot, but my first thought was if that was Marte there were going to be some comments about this gaffe.

  205. TJA says:

    5 am comes early…signing off…have a good evening gents and ladies…

  206. JRay3 says:

Not unless the DBacks are paying the money still owed to him.

I’ve seen a lot of him and he is a mess right now and is one of the bigger reasons Kevin Towers is going to lose his job.

  207. Andrew says:

Snider could be traded for international bonus pool money, not much else.

  208. Thundercrack says:

I am sitting in the rain at PNC Park

  209. Dadtackular says:

Give us your Gene Kelly impersonation. Oh… you said sitting .. not singing.

  210. tcb says:

    Tony Watson continues to dominate.

  211. Reading says:

    Cubs just got massively clowned.

  212. Eric Bowser says:

Edinson Volquez… scary to think where this team would be without this guy.

  213. tcb says:

    J. Hughes has quietly putting together a solid year.

  214. JRay3 says:

With the win the Bucs improve to 7-4 in June, go 4-3 on the home stand, back to 2 games back of .500 and just 2.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Team has won 3 of last 4 series. Certainly have to give team credit for fighting back and looking like they are starting to turn the corner a bit.

Big series in Miami up next on the docket. Locke takes the ball in the series opener.

  215. Maz in Iowa says:

    I’m singin in the rain…..

  216. Chuck H says:

In fact, a righty pitcher intentionally walked Cutch to get to Ike Davis.

  217. Chuck H says:

Yeah,Reading, Cutch’s hit was actually a triple. First they called it a triple, then changed it to a double, but he should, actually hve the triple because he made it to 3rd and then was carelessly picked off by the 3rd baseman who still had the ball when Cutch stepped off the bag. More dumb baserunning like Marte.

  218. Dom says:

Is Grilli out at closer at this point?
