  1. Tom P. says:

Here’s a link to a nice catch by McCutchen using MLB’s advanced technology. Not quite sure what the numbers mean, but it sure looks pretty.

    http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/73955164/v33676415/cutchs-diving-catch-tracked-by-mlbams-tracking-tech/?c_id=mlb

  2. Maz in Iowa says:

    No lineups yet

  3. Nate83 says:

They where talking about this on MLB radio. Apperently they are still in the gathering information stage of what is average when it comes to some of these numbers. Sure a guy travels 82 ft. in 3.1 seconds to make a catch. What does that mean? Is that better or worse then average? Same thing with throws to the plate. There is not much of a bench mark to know how impressive something is.

It won’t be long until they put a chip in the center of the ball to figure things out. Football just started testing a chip on shoulder pads to calculate a bunch of things such as speed, height of jump, impact, acceleratoin…….The Pirates are using chips put on underarmor wear to monitar things already like calories used. A few players including Martin used them last year. It’s a different age of sports we are living in.

  4. cmat0829 says:

delay is due to Harrison and whether he decides he can play tonight…gonna test his ankle… Hurdle has two lineups prepared, one with JayHey and one without. My guess if JayHey can go:

    JayHey 2B
    Polanco RF
    Cutch CF
    Ike 1B
    Martin C
    Pedro 3B
    Marte LF
    Mercer SS

    If JayHey can’t go:

    Polanco RF
    Marte LF
    Cutch CF
    Ike 1B
    Martin C
    Pedro 3B
    Mercer SS
    Barmes 2B

though, I’d love to see Gaby in there in place of IKE

  5. Patrick(RI) says:

I understand they are pretty good with crab dip.

  6. Nate83 says:

Ummmm…..Crab dip. How dare you mention that this close to dinner. Now I’m hungry.

  7. chethejet1 says:

So martin is playing with a chip on his shoulder.

  8. JRay3 says:

No Harrison, Michael Martinez staring at 2B and batting 8th….what does that say about Barmes?

  9. JRay3 says:

    “starting”

  10. Patrick(RI) says:

He might be sore from trying that dive over the catcher? And CH really does try to use guys that are called up.

  11. JRay3 says:

Just saw this bit of information:

After dropping to 10-18 on May 1st, the Pirates have the third best record in the majors at 22-16 since.

  12. Arriba Wilver says:

That says JHey’s issue is worse than we thought.

  13. Nate83 says:

I think they used it only in spring training. It goes into a little pocket on the underarmor shirt.

  14. JRay3 says:

Thought it was also a bit telling when they elected to send Mercer on to pop out to catcher to try and get into run down to score Marte with Barmes due up next. Just zero faith of him at the plate.

A lot of talk of whom between Snider or Tabata goes when Walker is activated, really have to think Barmes could also be in those discussions.

  15. Nate83 says:

Staring at second base might be dangerous. I’ve seen kids on my son’s T-ball team do that and almost get hurt.

  16. Maz in Iowa says:

Gerrit Cole (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a side session Sunday. For a guy with fatigue he seems to be throwing on a regular basis.IMO

  17. cmat0829 says:

    remarkable given the pitching uncertainty.

  18. Thundercrack says:

Who is your backup up shortstop then.

I would bet money that Clint Barmes is on this roster for the remainder of the season.

  19. NMR says:

    Awesome, Tom. Thanks!

  20. Thundercrack says:

I’ll bet JHay is able to pinch hit but not play the field.

  21. Thundercrack says:

Based upon the reaction of this blog – - that’s impossible!!!

    :-)

  22. cmat0829 says:

I tend to agree.. pirates have tended to be very cautious and risk-averse so was expecting lots of rest and inactivity, etc. We can all hope this is a good sign… that missing starts really was the being cautious part and Cole will be ready to jump back in there next start.

  23. NMR says:

As he should be. No reason to keep running Jordy out there every day if he’s still hitting like this in August.

  24. cmat0829 says:

Not sure I’d read very much into this… for one, Barmes is no spring chicken..and he did exert himself last night, late night arrival into Miami, etc. Plus why not give Martinez a shot before he goes back to Indy… I know nothing about Martinez but he may be better defensively at 2B than Barmey is.

As to keeping both Tabby and Snider, and jettisoning Barmes… I’m on board with that, though I’m also ok jettisoning both Barmes and Snider in favor of a veteran bench presence at the deadline. Now that NH and CH have opined that JayHey can handle SS, at least on occasion, and Mercer is back on track offensively, then yes, Barmes as insurance not as much needed…..and you cut Barmes and then an injury occurs, you figure to be able to pick up someone who is at least as good as Barmes at that point if need be.

Because Barmes as a pinch hitter is worthless… not a huge Snider fan but he has been decent as a pinch hitter.

  25. Maz in Iowa says:

There were a few bloggers who thought that Cole might be really hurt. This Chicken Little thing makes me roll my eyes a little bit.Plenty of time left in the season. No reason to worry this early.Let’s see where things are in August.

  26. Thundercrack says:

I went to the game last night and thought it was a very good win for the Bucs.

One minor play that bothered me.
Bottom of the 8th, Gabby on third with one out. Pedro strikes out. Against Wesley Wright.

Pedro has to make contact in that situation. Cut down the strikeouts.

  27. cmat0829 says:

I am between Chicken Little and ‘counting chickens’ on this. Shoulder discomfort/fatigue/soreness is not trivial and worries me. That said, there was no educated reason for the “oh-oh”, Tommy John crap that was swirling around. Cole is a big, tough kid. AND (even better) he is a SMART KID. I don’t think he risks serious injury for sake of a start or two (plus he’s advised by Boras who while snake-like is very smart). So if Cole is throwing it is because it is ok to be throwing and that is a very good sign indeed.

  28. cmat0829 says:

agree… his at bats have looked so good for about a month but that one was a clunker. Maybe lost focus , long rain delay, etc. but agree.

  29. Bizrow says:

He is what he is, we will miss him when he’s gone ;-)

  30. Brandie says:

Ladies and Gentleman…our voice of reason.

    MAZ!!!!!!!!!!

  31. NMR says:

Obviously just your opinion, no right or wrong, but I continue to be amazed at how little respect people are giving defense on a team with pitchers struggling so much.

No, you won’t be able to just go grab some random guy to play shortstop as well as Barmes.

And Jordy had a five game stretch between 5-31 and 6-6 that accounted for 26% of his hits, 25% of his extra base hits, and 2 of his 3 home runs.

Before that stretch he hit .190/.227/.261…after that stretch he’s hit .190/.217/.238.

If neither guy is gonna hit a lick, I still don’t know why you wouldn’t play the better defender.

  32. Arriba Wilver says:

I think worrying that Cole’s issue might be (might be) worse is rational. It’s not like we know what’s really going on. Plus, they apparently didn’t plan for the possible (maybe likely) result that Juan D might not be 100%. That, to me, is the real problem with how they approached this season. No way could anyone assume Wandy would be OK.

    We knew that.

  33. NMR says:

You’re a better man than I am, TC. I only stayed long enough to see Pedro’s first two ugly strikeouts.

  34. NMR says:

Absolutely regarding Wandy, and not just that he might not be 100%, but that he’d be able to go straight into the rotation after 9 months off.

I’m saying this in complete hindsight, and have admitted that before, but it seems clear that they never anticipated the chance of him not being able to regain form. Just assumed that healthy Wandy, which he apparently was, would be the same old good Wandy.

And you ALWAYS worry about shoulder injuries. Those are the career enders.

  35. Thundercrack says:

Not only did I stay, I sat in my seat in the rain.
So did my wife. Rain ponchos!!

I did say to my wife, “let’s give it to 10:30″ At about 10:25 they came out to take the tarp off.

  36. Maz in Iowa says:

Now this is pure speculation.Jason Kubel is going to be a free agent.I wonder if he might be a better option than Lunchbox?Just thinking out loud.

  37. Arriba Wilver says:

    Can he pitch?

  38. Thundercrack says:

You’re right Biz. But I can’t seem to stop thinking that if he would make contact a lot more times than striking out – what would the results be. He could have more than a few more RBIs

  39. Thundercrack says:

    Can he play short stop?

  40. Arriba Wilver says:

And this was an an elbow arthritis issue, which ended Koufax’s career. No excuses.

  41. Maz in Iowa says:

    Can he manage?

  42. Maz in Iowa says:

    Can he be a GM?

  43. Arriba Wilver says:

    Can he blog?

  44. Maz in Iowa says:

    :) :) :) :):) :) :) :):) :) :) :) :) :) :):) :) :) :) :):) :) :) :)

  45. Bizrow says:

Yeah, TC, Pedro can be pretty frustrating to say the least

  46. Maz in Iowa says:

    Gregory Polanco RF
    Starling Marte LF
    Andrew McCutchen CF
    Ike Davis 1B
    Russell Martin C
    Pedro Alvarez 3B
    Jordy Mercer SS
    Michael Martinez 2B
    (Jeff Locke P)

  47. Arriba Wilver says:

Watching on TV I was thinking, TC’s still there. With a 4 run lead, it being the 7th inning and it being 10 o’clock, I’m thinking TC’s still there, but I’d be gone.

  48. Arriba Wilver says:

What do you think the chances are that 24/7 was still there?

  49. 21sthebest says:

    +1 @ NMR

  50. 21sthebest says:

But do you adore your wife TC? Apparently not.

  51. NMR says:

Dang, buddy! I’m impressed at you and your better half.

  52. NMR says:

    Nope. None.

  53. Thundercrack says:

I was a little surprised I was still there too.

  54. Thundercrack says:

    I bought the rain ponchos!

  55. NMR says:

Should be fun to watch Jeff Locke try to bust Gio Stanton inside.

  56. NMR says:

Ha, by the way, the Mrs. and I were on the kiss cam…

  57. Maz in Iowa says:

Not very many Tabata sightings lately

  58. Thundercrack says:

    +1

Did you plant one on her…..or barely touch lips?!

  59. War_Horse says:

Go back and check your stats. The Pirates were 15-14 in May. They’re 7-4 in June. Your numbers don’t add up.

  60. Thundercrack says:

He said as of May 1

  61. The Gunner says:

Maybe a trade is brewing where Tabby is involved. The BMTIB doesn’t want to risk him getting injured. This is all speculation, of course.

  62. 21sthebest says:

    The suspense is killing me.

  63. 21sthebest says:

Oscar Taveras sent to the minors.

  64. Bizrow says:

I think Oscar is hitting well under the Mendoza line, had a dinger his first game up, but other than that.

He’s been hit with injuries the past couple of years.

If Polanco is hitting that poorly when PRNW is ready to come back, he may get sent down as well

  65. Bizrow says:

There are things out there that you just don’t want to know about :-)

  66. Eric Bowser says:

another professional swing by Polanco… love that approach

  67. War_Horse says:

I stand corrected. If you don’t count the doubleheaded loss to Baltimore on May 1st, the Pirates are tied since then for 3d best W-L record (22-16) with Oakland & LA Angels. SFO (26-13) is first andToronto (26-14) is second.

  68. Eric Bowser says:

Marte all over that one…. 2-R HR

  69. Brandie says:

    MARTE PARTAY!!!!!!

  70. Eric Bowser says:

Then speed….. SPEED for Cutch on infield single.

I like the way this game has started.

  71. Thundercrack says:

Where is Nevrett? Why Rob King?

  72. Eric Bowser says:

Ike Davis beats the shift…. 4 straight hits….

  73. Andrew says:

Taveras was called up in response to the Adams injury, I don’t think he was ever going to stay up. Cardinals care about service time too.

  74. Eric Bowser says:

    son is graduating

  75. JRay3 says:

Just what Locke needed to do after being given early lead.

    Just 10 pitches to get a 1-2-3 first .

  76. Brandie says:

    Love the efficiency.

  77. bpn8pitt says:

    Nice rundown. Ugly stadium.

    600 million dollars for that.

  78. Wild Bill says:

Just got home from the ‘burgh, and see that Thunder and NMR were also at the game last night as my wife and I were. We stayed to the excellent end on both Wed. and last night. Rain or not, we had a lot of fun.

Polanco’s plate discipline for his inexperience is just remarkable. Cutch is ridiculous right now, and the pitching of Volquez continues to get better with time.

  79. The Gunner says:

Let’s hope Locke can duplicate Big Ed’s performance last night Thus far, he is looking real good.

  80. bpn8pitt says:

    Seriously, the logo, the field.

Send this team to Montreal, Vancouver.

  81. Eric Bowser says:

More speed… Marte beating out play at 1B, stealing 2B, and coming home on hit to LF from Cutch to score.

    Speed!

  82. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

We’re seriously going to be spoiled with this top 3 group.

Very special and exciting to watch.

I still say Marte is the most exciting guy on this team.

  83. Andrew says:

I worry about Locke tonight, Brewers lineup was a good match up for him, a lot of hackers. Marlins are more patient as a team and if he isn’t getting calls on the edge, walks with ground balls finding holes is a bad combination.

  84. Patrick(ri) says:

How on earth did the ump miss that? Replay shows him right there looking at it.

  85. JRay3 says:

Although Pirates bottom of order fails to produce a run that half innings they do make Eovaldi throw 28 pitches and he sits at 78 through four.

Will get many chances against pen tonight.

  86. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Top 3 can’t do it all. Need some production from the bottom half from time to time.

  87. Matt hoffman says:

Nick Kingham has a shutout through 5 innings at Indy!

  88. Thundercrack says:

It’s getting fun watching Polanco & Marte score on the same hit.

    Ike is hot!! (hitter)

  89. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Give him a few more starts before he’s called up.

  90. JRay3 says:

Marte looks very comfortable in the 2 hole and Ike Davis with a couple of knocks and big RBI’s tonight.

Bucs chase Marlin starter before completion of 5th as offense continues to click.

  91. JRay3 says:

Envisioning this lineup when Walker returns…watch out.

  92. JRay3 says:

This is a Marlin team that entered tonight’s game 22-11 at home the Bucs are beating up.

  93. JRay3 says:

Umm a 3-0 green light for Michael Martinez?

  94. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    With a 6-2 lead?

    Why not?

  95. Andrew says:

That was odd, but the pitcher is up next.

  96. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Exactly

  97. Brandie says:

Hoping this is the time the pitching starts to come around. Who would have thought…Edinson The Electrifying and Locke Down!!!

  98. bpn8pitt says:

Terrible, JRay. With Locke on deck.

Awesome getting into bullpen 5th inning first game of series.

Bucs like Pens were midseason. Next man up. Tomlinism. :)

  99. JRay3 says:

    +++

  100. JRay3 says:

Good gosh Polanco ropes that ball…so far as advertised.

  101. bpn8pitt says:

    This is a beautiful thing.

  102. JRay3 says:

Marte a cool 4-4….think that makes top 3 batters 9-11 on the night.

  103. Brandie says:

“Obviously”. Another quote from The Tao of Tomlin.

  104. JRay3 says:

Cutch getting a lot of table setting, dangerous.

  105. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Understood.

It’s possible he missed a sign as well.

  106. Brandie says:

Good to see the kid playing the game on his own terms. Every at bat, every chance in the outfield is an opportunity to stake a claim. Good to see hunger. Complacency is the enemy.

  107. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    So much for demoting him…

    I wouldn’t have

  108. Matt hoffman says:

Kingham now has a shutout through 6 with 7 strikouts and only one walk. I wanted to go to the game in Indy tonight and take one of my kids, but my wife said no! (darn to-do lists)

  109. Andrew says:

    Certainly possible.

  110. Andrew says:

Damn, I thought there was a chance to break the game open, McCutchen then Sanchez against a LHP.

  111. bpn8pitt says:

Such is life in the National Football League, Brandie.

    Take ownership of that. :)

  112. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I still don’t have a huge issue with it, even with the pitcher on deck.

  113. Brandie says:

I must say it has been an interesting broadcast with King and Wehner. More analysis and less talking out of the nether regions.

  114. bpn8pitt says:

Like JRay said, they setup for Cutch like that…woooooo.

Neat to see that OF click. Mr Kovacevic needs to come up with a name.

  115. Brandie says:

Because…wait for it…”The Standard Is The Standard”. :)

  116. Brandie says:

    Three Finger Gob Smack!!!!

  117. Now 7 with 8 K’s. Should have gone to that game, Matt. The work will be there when you get home.

  118. bpn8pitt says:

Quisqueyanos means mother of all lands. Its used to describe the D.R.

    Hmmm. Something with 3.

  119. The Gunner says:

    Lucky

I think chances are good that Kingham gets a cup of coffee in Pgh this season.

  120. Brandie says:

    Pot Stirrer!!!

Going to see The Curve tomorrow.

  121. Brandie says:

    The Three Amigos!!

  122. Brandie says:

The Galaxy Trio!!! (Homage to Hanna-Barbera.)

  123. JRay3 says:

Back to back 7 inning performances by Bucs starters as Locke continues to look like the 2013 first half version with this terrific outing.

That will get a bullpen rested in a hurry.

  124. Matt hoffman says:

I like your thinking Lucky! The Future looks very bright for the Buccos.

  125. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Can’t frown on what Jeff Locke has done over the last 2 outings.

  126. Brandie says:

    Triple Threat!!!

  127. tcb says:

Is it too soon to think Locke is not McDonald, part 2? He has been impressive.

  128. Andrew says:

I like road trip, I enjoy listening to Wehner’s analysis.

  129. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Sounds rather kinky

  130. Andrew says:

Getting away from Burnett might have been good for Locke, he is really leaning on the change up and less of that Burnett knuckle curve.

  131. Brandie says:

But some in the most crotchety fan base on earth will find reasons to frown. :)

  132. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Absolutely, but let him get a few more starts for Indy before that happens.

    At minimum, September call up

  133. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    Or second half Jeff Locke?

    I’ll keep with the present

  134. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Oh you know they will, hard to frown on this start though.

  135. The Gunner says:

Jeff Locke’s performance tonight was superb tonight. Way to step up, my man! Geez – he might even come out for the 8th inning!!

  136. Brandie says:

    You really get me Ryan!

  137. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

He needs to be more like Tom Glavine.

Paint the corners and change speeds.

He’s not a power pitcher like AJ is/was.

  138. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

    I do my best….

I could easy drop those lines on almost anything that’s said

  139. The Gunner says:

Didn’t Jeff refer to #34 as JA?

If the shoe fits, you wear it!

  140. Brandie says:

    Keepin’ it schmutzy!

  141. Brandie says:

The Nutting Regime kept Locke down too long. Just starting the conspiracy thread (Read…Snark Alert).

  142. Brandie says:

Me too. Works well when paired with King!

  143. Polanco only 4-5 tonight and BA is .368.

Oh wait, he’s with the Bucs now, not Indy. No need to report on him. We can see what he does.

    Slipped my mind.

    ;)

  144. bpn8pitt says:

    Huntington had a good night.

  145. Brandie says:

Miss The Love Groat’s Daily Polanco Countdowns.

  146. Smitty55 says:

WOW’ insane speedatthetop of theorder. gonna see a lot of fast balls. drive em baby

  147. Andrew says:

He is can command and control the fastball, and get whiffs with the change he can be a very effective pitcher.

  148. chethejet1 says:

Shame Francisco and Cole will miss starts. Once Walker is back the line up looks to be more productive. Still lack power but may be good enough. Key is can Locke and Cumpton pitch well enough.

  149. Florida Steeler says:

What’s with Wilson? 6-2 lead and a major league pitcher can’t throw the ball over the plate!!!

  150. Andrew says:

Wow just reread that, If he can*

  151. Reading says:

Let’s just walk enough guys to set up Stanton for a grand slam.

  152. Reading says:

    Come on Man!

  153. bpn8pitt says:

    4 walks…

  154. Reading says:

This has Stanton walk off all over it. Unbelievable.

  155. Reading says:

    Not good.

  156. bpn8pitt says:

    Casey at the bat…

  157. Steelag70 says:

    Come on Grili…geezzz….

  158. chethejet1 says:

Wilson has not developed into the pitcher he promised to become thus far. His control is quite frankly bad. Grilli simply can’t strike out batters like last year. He looks like he has a decent fastball but he simply isn’t the closer as he allows to much contact. Message for Grilli here, not good enough.

  159. Reading says:

Took care of my Stanton walk off theory by putting winning run on second.

  160. Chuck H says:

Surely we have a pitcher who can find home plate.

  161. tcb says:

A feel good game has turned into a nightmare.

  162. Steelag70 says:

Up to Melancon now…..kudos to Hurdle for making the move….

  163. Florida Steeler says:

    Grilli stinks–sorry.

  164. Patrick(ri) says:

    Worse nightmare: McGheehee walk off?

  165. Thundercrack says:

They better not screw this up for Jeff Locke

  166. DJ says:

May be time for Watson or Melancon as full-time closer.

    Cannot get by throwing 91-92.

  167. Reading says:

    Has Watson already pitched?

  168. TJA says:

How often does Cheese get taken out of game?

  169. Reading says:

    Ex Pirate factor in play.

  170. Baywatch says:

Only thing that I can think of right now that would SUCK more royally would be to lose this game!

  171. Steelag70 says:

    Uggghhh

  172. chethejet1 says:

Time for the big curve here

  173. hockeymonster says:

Good think Doc can’t see this.

  174. Steelag70 says:

    $$#*&!!!!!

  175. The Gunner says:

Wilson has been a bit sloppy as of late. Then Grilled Cheese slops things up more but, Mark the Shark screws up!!

  176. Steelag70 says:

Guess we need a closer now…

  177. Andrew says:

    Un-**#$#$-believable.

  178. Reading says:

Great job closing this out. Yes.

  179. bpn8pitt says:

    Seriously, 13?!?

  180. TJA says:

Wow…just one of those crazy games…one of those nights…

  181. Patrick(ri) says:

At least we made them get one into the outfield, this time.

  182. Matt hoffman says:

    This is terrible!!!!!!

  183. Reading says:

Maybe Polanco can get 5th hit. Oh wait. Walk off walk first.

  184. DJ says:

    . . . or maybe just Watson.

  185. JRay3 says:

Six walks this inning, just at an absolute loss right now.

    Watson as new closer?

  186. Steelag70 says:

Freakin’ A….this has NOTHING to do with it being the 13th…

  187. Florida Steeler says:

    They did–how disgusting.

  188. Wild Bill says:

This inning smells of thinking the game was already won.

  189. Steelag70 says:

I sure hope so JRay…..he has earned the chance…

  190. JRay3 says:

Have to feel for Locke goes 8 strong and strapped with a ND…would not expect bullpen to cough that lead up with way it had been pitching.

Need to find a way to pull this one out.

  191. DJ says:

    Not a huge Wilson fan.

More batters who lay off him, sooner they’ll realize a command issue.

  192. The Gunner says:

Absolutely, JRay. Grilli has not been the same since his 2013 injury.

  193. chethejet1 says:

Man this is tough to watch. Never thought the bull pen would lay an egg. I have a long talk with Wilson and his spot in the organization going forward. Grilli has to be moved from the closer role.

  194. Brandie says:

    Time for extras. :(

  195. Smitty55 says:

wow…and to think I had myjammys on oh well…could be a loooong night

  196. Andrew says:

There is a reason Wilson was moved to the pen in AAA, I would have traded him when all those teams thought he could start in the off-season.

  197. TJA says:

    Righto, Bay

  198. Reading says:

Pedro whiffed. This is not reality.

  199. Florida Steeler says:

Pedro, Pedro–he has a way of pi***ng me off.

  200. DJ says:

    No need for any concern.

    Gomez warming up.

  201. Steelag70 says:

Now the offense stinks all of a sudden this game…

  202. Breakthestreak says:

Wilson’s been struggling. Hurdle uses these games when Bucs have leads to get his struggling relievers some confidence. But it never works and easy wins become a struggle. He’s got to stop this and use a reliever who’s pitching well.

  203. Brandie says:

Thank you for making me think of The Eagles. UGH!!!!

  204. DJ says:

    Like Gomez warming up?

  205. Thundercrack says:

David Todd brought up this point: Hurdle brought Grilli because it turned into a save situation.

  206. Steelag70 says:

    Ok…Polanco time!!

  207. Reading says:

The Cutch and Gaby ABs with guys on second and third and nothing looming large.

    Time for 25′s first homer.

  208. JRay3 says:

How about Polanco playing the part of hero? Is it too much to ask for a 5th hit?

  209. chethejet1 says:

Hurdle hasn’t smiled for awhile. He has a look of disgust that I rarely see on him. He is not a happy camper. How is Snider still on this team. He looks like he is unaware his time is limited.

  210. Steelag70 says:

    Uggghh

  211. Steelag70 says:

Good AB for Polanco even with the K…

  212. JRay3 says:

Not going to get upset at the rookie.

But I am still disgusted by SIX walks in the 9th. Just should never happen.

  213. Andrew says:

Yeah, Wenher claiming the strike zone is smaller now is just laughable.

  214. Andrew says:

Great, Gomez, can the Pirates just forfeit.

  215. Steelag70 says:

Finally….someone from the BP tonight who throws strikes…

  216. Arriba Wilver says:

    Good hidden vigorish. ;-)

  217. Patrick(ri) says:

Just when you least expect it . . .

  218. Reading says:

Gomez 1-2-3. That would have really come in handy last inning.

  219. Smitty55 says:

this is our shot …put it away

  220. Andrew says:

Sorry for the negativity, but 3 run leads in the 9th are converted 97% of the time. I need some time to get over that inning.

  221. Bill_StateCollege says:

I’m with Breakthestreak and Thundercrack regarding first Hurdle using late comfortable leads as morale building time for struggling relievers and having it always blow up in his face. He never learns. And the point about bringing in Grilli when a large lead dwindles to a save is a pet peeve of mine and modern baseball. Hurdle needed strikeouts. Grilli no longer throws strikeouts. Why Hurdle looks surprised by this always amazes me. Grilli is done as a closer and has been for a while. It’s sad but that’s the way it is.

  222. Reading says:

Going to settle in now like a 5 OT NHL game.

  223. Reading says:

At least Stanton isn’t guaranteed to come up this inning.

  224. Smitty55 says:

If this turns out badlt, it will be one that we’ll remember in

    september WAH

  225. Reading says:

I guess Stewart will play tomorrow. That’ll be 0-8 from the 8 and 9 spots.

  226. Arriba Wilver says:

    Clint should have known.

    :-)

  227. Steelag70 says:

    Gomez….who da thunk it…

  228. DJ says:

    Is JHay available tonight?

Never thought I’d write that before this season.

  229. Arriba Wilver says:

I like Rob King better than Tim Neverette.

In further news, the sun will come up tomorrow.

  230. DJ says:

Agreed, AW. A very easygoing, nonchalant way about him.

    Like Pedro.

  231. Andrew says:

Grilli is still striking out a batter/inning. The entire idea of defined roles for the bullpen is dumb, he brought Grilli because it was a save situation, which is just dumb.

  232. Patrick(ri) says:

No question team needs a spark after the balloon was punctured. That’s it, I am out of analogies and metaphors.

  233. Reading says:

Twilight Zone: Pedro whiffed. This is not reality. Department of Redundacy Department.

  234. Rock Ain't Dead says:

Nightmare. Only thing missing from this horror story is Jason Vorhees.

  235. Maz in Iowa says:

    Capt Obvious here.Not happy!

  236. DJ says:

Punctured, then shredded, then swallowed, then regurgitated, and then hurled out like a missile.

    Not to get dramatic.

  237. Arriba Wilver says:

The easygoing Pedro just called himself something that started with an “A” and ended with a “hole.”

  238. Reading says:

Waiting for the 574 foot shot.

  239. Smitty55 says:

Gomez going 3 innings…looks like the starter we need on Sunday…lol

  240. DJ says:

I can feel a hot streak of 5 for 20 comin’ on.

  241. Rock Ain't Dead says:

Is there any doubt how this will end?

  242. TJA says:

I don’t want the Bucs to lose…never do…but I’d just like to see this game get over with one way or the other and move on to tomorrow. this is really painful.

  243. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I figured it out no worries

  244. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Sorry phone died haven’t been able to respond until now.

Waste of a great outing by Jeff Locke tonight absolutely ridiculous the bullpen could not hold it down

  245. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I don’t want to see (in particular) Justin Wilson on the mound for the Pirates again.
The guy now has an obsession with walking people late in the game, when the Pirates have a big lead.
Totally ridiculous to let this game slip away!

  246. TJA says:

Bad night Ryan By the pen…

  247. Patrick(ri) says:

Hurdle does’t want to see us lose agonizingly with Jones driving in McGeehee.

  248. Bizrow says:

This would be a tough one to lose

    But on to the 13th

  249. Maz in Iowa says:

    Yessss!

  250. bpn8pitt says:

I feel bad for the Bucco fans who went to this game.

Rough part of town to be at that late. No joke.

  251. Patrick(ri) says:

Pirates have better pinch hitters left.

  252. Maz in Iowa says:

BTW Kingham was outstanding .7 shutout innings w/1 BB and 8 Ks

  253. Arriba Wilver says:

Yeah, he should bring them in in close games. ? ? ?

  254. JRay3 says:

In a season that has had its share of tough, heart breaking losses this might be the worst of them if Bucs don’t pull this out.

  255. Arriba Wilver says:

    Gomez still batting 1000.

  256. Rock Ain't Dead says:

    Jeanmar! A sacrifice!

  257. JRay3 says:

Ok nicely executed bunt Gomez, RISP and top of order, have to cash in now.

  258. Rock Ain't Dead says:

Where’s Morris when we need him? All these guys are nasty.

  259. Steelag70 says:

    Polanco time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  260. Andrew says:

    Going to need more runs!

  261. Arriba Wilver says:

    Wooooo!

  262. Reading says:

    HAMMERED!!!

  263. Maz in Iowa says:

    POLANCO!!!!!!!!

  264. JRay3 says:

POLANCO YES!!!!! Five hit night just unreal.

Get Watson in for save now!

  265. Rock Ain't Dead says:

No, he wouldn’t have helped us win any games in April…

  266. Breakthestreak says:

I freakin luv it! How f ‘in good is he!!!

  267. Maz in Iowa says:

Little early,BUT he “might” be ready!

  268. Lad 9 says:

++++++ this young man is advertised.

  269. Steelag70 says:

    SWEET swing!!

  270. Patrick(ri) says:

As impressive as it could be! BTW, how about some love for Barmes, tonight – he has had a very nice game.

  271. JRay3 says:

The kid is going to be special!

  272. Steelag70 says:

    Gregory POWlanco!!!

  273. Steelag70 says:

    +++

  274. bpn8pitt says:

    Turned back into special night.

  275. DJ says:

    Effortless swing.

    Then a bullet over 400′.

  276. Steelag70 says:

    Kudos to Gomez tonight….

  277. Baywatch says:

Gregor Mendel Polanco with some GENETOCIDE!!

  278. TJA says:

Gomez is my MVP tonight. I saw what the kid did to sit, but Gomez was outstanding, too.

  279. DJ says:

    Effortless swing.

    Then a bullet over 400′.

  280. JRay3 says:

    +++

    A star is born!

  281. Patrick(ri) says:

    Yes, indeed!

  282. JRay3 says:

No doubt, saved his best performance for when team really needed it.

  283. Steelag70 says:

I am liking this new top of the order…seems to have sparked Marte as well…

  284. TJA says:

Or Locke, too. Jeff is looking great in his comeback

  285. Steelag70 says:

    RAISE IT!!!!!!!

  286. DJ says:

    Nutting was right.

Another week and he would have been 6 for 7.

  287. Maz in Iowa says:

    Polanco bailing out Wilson/Grilli

  288. DJ says:

    Nutting was right.

Another week and he would have been 6 for 7.

  289. Bizrow says:

    Raise the Jolly Roger

Locke pitched a gem, the club rallied for the bullpen

  290. Daquido_Bazzini says:

Nice HR for Polanco to win it, but that’s not a game the Pirates want to brag about winning.

  291. DJ says:

What the heck is wrong with my post locations?

  292. bpn8pitt says:

    Way to battle back.

  293. TJA says:

Nice chatting with you folks. Have a good evening.

  294. Arriba Wilver says:

Jeanmar deserves a little love, too.

  295. Andrew says:

Solid work by Gomez, reminiscent of when he would relieve the Sanchez debacles last season.

  296. Lad 9 says:

Raise it! Lots of ugly in the last half of the ninth, but the G-Men, Gregory and Gomez, put on the ritz and save the day. Whew!

  297. Steelag70 says:

Maybe this is that “spark” game that the Buccos needed….

  298. DJ says:

    Nutting was right.

Another week and he would have been 6 for 7.

  299. Andrew says:

I take back my earlier quote.

  300. Baywatch says:

Jeanmar!! I’m with you TJA!! Particularly since the other relievers SUCKED!! Gutsy, big time performance by Jeamar!

  301. JRay3 says:

Behind a Gregory Polanco five hit night including a two run HR in the 13th and four shutout innings from Jeanmar Gomez the Bucs take the opener by drowning the Fish 8-6 and there was nooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Bucs are 8-4 in June and and just one game under .500.

The Pirates will go for their fourth series win in last five tomorrow afternoon when Charlie Morton opposes Randy Wolf on the mound.

    Go Bucs!

  302. Tom P. says:

That’s definitely doing it the hard way.

  303. Baywatch says:

    Up here, my BRUTHA!

  304. Bizrow says:

    He most certainly does

  305. DJ says:

    2013 again.

First half Locke and first half Gomez.

  306. Arriba Wilver says:

Oh, I don’t know. They broke an 11 game losing streak on Friday the 13′s.

  307. Cobra39 says:

El Coffee with 5 hits and the game winning HR. Congrats, kid.

  308. Bizrow says:

IMO Rob King did good on PBP, except for the jinxing ;-)

  309. bpn8pitt says:

It was not a good night after all.

    The Emperor is dead…:(

  310. Steelag70 says:

    Wow…dang…rest in peace Coach Chaz….

  311. Bizrow says:

Polanco came across pretty dam cool in his post game interview

Kudos to him and Rene Gayo

  312. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  313. Reading says:

Polanco definitely would not have helped in the 25 one run losses. No. Just not enough AAA at bats.

  314. Bizrow says:

    Chuck Noll passed?

If so, you could tell he was struggling, pretty big time

If he went, I’m sure he knew it was time

  315. Smitty55 says:

wow..so the birth of a possible baseball legend to be, is overwhelmed by the passing of a beloved football legend…ironic??

  316. Reading says:

Agree. Gomez righted the ship. Great job.

  317. Bizrow says:

Thats my speculation, not confirmed yet, for me anyways

  318. Steelag70 says:

Eddie Bouchette confirmed it through twitter…

  319. Thanks to Polanco and Jeanmar Gomez, the Pirates won their first Friday.the 13th game since 2003, though they almost blew it in the 9th, and they won it in the 13th, and boy they were certainly lucky tonight!

  320. TJ says:

The Steelers are because Chuck Noll was. Great players don’t guarantee success. Fans growing up loving the ground and pound football rarely realize it was an identity started by Chuck Noll. RIP Chuck; hope you and Myron are sharing some laughs.

  321. Bizrow says:

    No

    Apples and Oranges

  322. Lad 9 says:

RIP Coach Noll. He did it is his way, with, class, intelligence and dignity. The world is a poorer place today.

  323. Bizrow says:

Mr Noll was a man of character and honor and integrity

When the burgh named a street after him and he could not attend, well, common sense tells you he was struggling.

  324. Bizrow says:

++++, much like Neal Armstrong, they simply got into the shadows and lived their lives

  325. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++++

  326. dennis g says:

    What about four run leads?

  327. War_Horse says:

    Puig? Who dat?

  328. Pucknutz says:

The route efficiency is amazing for this catch. Awesome jump on the ball and straight to the catch point.
    Don’t get no better.

  329. Baywatch says:

+++ I got his postgame interview bookmarked and have watched it 5 times now. Kid is SUCH A BREATH OF FRESH AIR, I don’t want him to EVER change! He even doesn’t seem annoyed by the Stupid Robby questions!

  330. Karen22 says:

    True that!! He’s a KEEPER!

  331. Karen22 says:

    YES!

  332. Karen22 says:

Really remarkable after the 9th inning MELTDOWN. Two of the three guys I really don’t want to see in there late anymore are WILSON and GRILLI. Neither can find the plate with a big lead. I trust NEITHER to close out a game like that. Tony Watson for closer…NOW!!
