  1. Tom P. says: says that the game starts at 7:10 rather than the 7:30 noted at the top of this thread, I don’t know which is correct.

  2. It’s fixed, Tom. Thanks. I was going off a guide from the offseason. Maybe it changed.

  3. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

Watch out for Cobb tonight, last 2 starts has been unreal.

  4. cmat0829 says:

Pirates get to experience a game in one of the truly awful stadiums in all of sports. Really embarrassing that the ownership there (and MLB) have not forced the issue on this… either support the new stadium or lose the team. Tropicana Field is a miserable place. The plans that were drawn up for a stadium on the water with an ‘umbrella type roof’ were outstanding but no support and no deal.

  5. Lad 9 says:

Went to the Trop last year and experienced an indoor weather delay, which was special. Let’s go Bucs!

  6. What about Facebook commenting? How do you feel about that?

It obviously would solve everyone’s concerns about threaded comments, indentation, and you can change the order to whatever you like.

  7. Thundercrack says:

But real name is not Thundercrack….if you know what I mean.

  8. cmat0829 says:

thanks for the lineups as always. Eyeballing this lineup, three things jump out:

    1) Davis doesn’t belong in 4 spot
    2) Martin doesn’t belong in 5 spot
    3) LIKE Jay Hey lower in order breaking up the ‘lesser hitters’ below the top 3.

I know Neil coming back tomorrow can solve #1. Moving JayHey to 5 (or even Pedro) can solve #2.

  9. NMR says:

That’ll get me out of here for good, so score one for the “PRO” column. ;)

  10. Carlos Danger says:

I’m not on Facebook, so that wouldn’t work for me. Social media and Carlos Danger just don’t mix…

  11. lonely libertarian says:

How long will Hurdle continue with Davis @4?

  12. Lad 9 says:

Not on Facebook and don’t plan to be, so I would be out. Not sure what we are trying to accomplish here, as I thought the blog worked pretty well for the most part. I can’t compare to any other sites, since this is the only one I go to.

  13. Florida Steeler says:

    Good idea.

  14. Arriba Wilver says:

We finally get to see James Loney.

  15. Arriba Wilver says:

I know. Cost you a couple jobs already. ;-)

  16. Carlos Danger says:

Precisely. Although I wasn’t adequately qualified for either job to be honest.

  17. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Trying to offer platform that works best, including on mobile. Want this to be as easy, efficient as possible for all users.

Only platform available that allows users to basically pick whatever they want. — plus Like buttons, threaded replies, indentations, all that — is Facebook.

And anonymity is no more or less an issue on Facebook than anywhere else. I don’t know of many who DON’T have some alter ego on Facebook. :)

  18. Arriba Wilver says:

  19. Arriba Wilver says:

    Do you?

  20. 21sthebest says:

I’m in favor if it then! ;-)

  21. Bizrow says:

This blog will not die no matter where we go/what we do ;-)

  22. Bizrow says:

Mexico advances in the WC after getting in by the skin of their teeth.

A question, what teams are looking for OF help? I think the Red Sox and the Mutts are two

  23. JohninOshkosh says:

Dejan: you tell my wife it’s OK to set up a phoney Facebook page. Thanks.

  24. Chuck H says:

I’ll give you a vote, cmat0829, to replace Clint Hurdle, immediately.

  25. Milo Hamilton says:

Not on facebook or twitter, nor will I ever be. If people I actually know need to find me, they have my phone number or my e-mail.

  26. Bizrow says:

And its in the middle of nowhere

  27. Maz In Iowa says:

Not on facebook either.Tried it and won’t go back either!

  28. Patrick(RI) says:

I will throw in with the geriatric crowd and vote for the Status Quo.

  29. Arriba Wilver says:

I’ll call you at 8:00 PM.

  30. The Gunner says:

I am with you on this one, Patrick. The older you get, the less you like change – LOL!

  31. Maz In Iowa says:

Quite a few of us will not be on facebook!

  32. The Gunner says:

Can Volquez give us 7 good innings tonight??

  33. Maz In Iowa says:

Nah.Be lucky if he gives us 5 innings/100 pitches I fear

  34. Maz In Iowa says:

When Cole comes back I wish they’d keep Cumpton and send Volquez down.Sounds like they will keep Vanimal(no options).Of course they won’t want to eat Volquez’s salary so Cumpton will go,but that means the best 25 won’t be in the dugout.JMHO

  35. dennis g says:

You know that in order to have FB verify identity that you must have a cell phone? I don’t know if that enters into your thinking or not but it is a factor that keeps one from participating on some sites.

  36. The Gunner says:

Yep, EV is pretty iffy, Maz. If tonight’s outing is anywhere close to his last outing, well……………uh…………………you know……………………….

Let’s all try to be positive. Maybe Pedro will start his hot streak tonight.

  37. Andrew says:

Non-geriatric here, I’m part of great unwashed youth ruining this once great nation, heck I’m on someone’s lawn right now. But I like the current format, order of posts doesn’t bother me, and I don’t use facebook.

  38. dennis g says:

Hire Ken Macha, he’s already coming to the North Side everyday anyway.

  39. JohninOshkosh says:

    Turn that music down!

  40. Mike Shigley says:

No cell phone, no Facebook — and I guess, soon, no blog. And I hate reverse order.

  41. Maz In Iowa says:

Davis ..Has nine hits in his last 26 at bats (.346).

Was moved to the fourth spot on 5/23 (the Pirates have gone 14-9 when he hits fourth in the starting lineup).

  42. Karen22 says:

YOOHOO! The consensus appears to be: We HATE reverse order comments. For what it’s worth.

  43. Thundercrack says:

Some of you should change your avatar to a picture of Archie Bunker

  44. Maz In Iowa says:

Petey does better in interleague games.
He has produced a .316 average in 10 interleague games this year, going 12-for-38 with a homer and five RBI.

  45. Maz In Iowa says:

    Maybe Abe(yes I’m still alive)Vigoda instead

  46. radio wave says:

Geriatric and proud of it. If the blog is reversed, can I reverse my age?

  47. Patrick(ri) says:

If you know who Archie is, you are certainly within reach of “geriatrica.”

  48. pattonbb says:

I use Facebook but I’m not sure I’d like all commenting here to look like that. I didn’t think anything was wrong with the old format.

But, I also think soccer is boring so what do I know?

  49. radio wave says:

    Base running again!

  50. Florida Steeler says:

Can Marte get a brain transplant?? The Rays announcers could not believe his bonehead base running.

  51. KING says:

Good start with Marte on base. Marte at 2nd base on steal. I think Pirates win 7-3 tonight. Cutch on his usual June tear. Cutch a steal! 2nd & 3rd. RBI G Out Ike Davis Pirates 1-0!!! You think Martin should be resigned for big money? Or should Tony Sanchez get his chance to catch finally? 2-0 Pirates now Cobb throws it in OF!!! Like this Bucco Start!!! KING

  52. Karen22 says:

He’s an incredible AIRHEAD on the bases! COME ON!

  53. radio wave says:

    Can EV keep this lead?

  54. Florida Steeler says:

Would Volquez take his hat with him??

  55. Wild Bill says:

Volquez mostly away from where Russ is setting up.

  56. radio wave says:

Are they having problems with the turf and roof?

  57. Andrew says:

Agree with Wehner there, too good of a pitch to throw when ahead.

  58. Karen22 says:

And Pedro HAS to sit when Walker returns. What a mess he is.

  59. radio wave says:

    Birds inside the dome?

  60. Timothy Mohr says:

the pirates need to put marte in school everyday for half an hour watching film, use examples of other teams running and use game situations to show him what he needs to look for, think his talent has got him here and he needs to get much better at running the bases so much talent

  61. Jason says:

Besides being left-handed with no run production, what is Snider’s value? Waive him tomorrow, then work on dumping Tabata and his horrific contract. Tired of hearing what a big decision it will be. … Barmes can play anywhere in the infield, which has value.

  62. Mike says:

How about a column taking us back to” the good old days” and by that I mean last year at this time…

  63. Milo Hamilton says:

Is being out of the batters box reviewable ?

  64. Mario Lopez says:

Now with 15 teams in each league & “interleague play” now ALL season long, its time the NL takes on the DH. C’mon tonight Hurdle has Snider as DH & batting him 8th. C’mon. Hope the next Commish fixes 2 things Selig has Fubar’d up, #1 please get rid of Idea AS-Game as winner gets Home Field for WORLD SERIES #2 copy the NHL playoffs 2-2-1-1-1 the 2-3-2 dumbest thing.

  65. Florida Steeler says:

  66. Dejan Kovacevic says:

No, really, Joe Maddon was doing the more advanced shifts way before the Pirates started convincing people they were some sort of pioneers in this regard.

  67. Milo Hamilton says:

Shifting guys with 83 big league AB’s is ridiculous.

  68. Florida Steeler says:

I think you are correct but you know money will be part of the final decision–always is with Nutting.

  69. radio wave says:

    Probably next cba.

  70. Scott Kliesen says:

Going to need more than 2 to win.

    Signed- Captain Obvious

  71. Maz In Iowa says:

Pirates will be much better when that Noel Stalker….Ned Stoker…..Nells Straker guy gets back. :)

  72. JRay3 says:

That is where the legs and speed of Marte turn into an asset. Turned a single into a double and than scores on the very next pitch.

  73. Dejan Kovacevic says:

  74. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Captain Obvious is on board! :)

  75. Luke says:

Shifting on Kiermaier doesn’t make sense. His game is his feet just invites a bunt. Maddon will take it to, he is the king of you shift I will bunt

  76. Andrew says:

Great illustration of why despite visible blunders, Marte has been just as valuable on the bases as Mike Trout over the last season and half.

  77. JRay3 says:

Marte now with 20 hits in his past 50 AB’s for a cool .400. Has taken his average from .230 to .263 during that time.

  78. Nate83 says:

I’m not a fan of this format either. I do read magazines backwards sometimes but in this case I’m not a big fan of not seeing the first post at the top and last post at the bottom. I saw somebody suggest giving the user the option of setting up the format either way. I don’t know if that is possible but that would be nice.

  79. Jim S. says:

Marte swings at two pitches nowhere near the strike zone to fall down 0-2, then laces a hustle double to RC. If he could ever get even a decent idea of plate discipline, he’d be a monster. Big if, though.

And, Cutch is 2-2 w RISP tonight – although Marte’s bad base running cost him a RBI in the 1st.

Volquez looks a bit shaky to me so far. For some reason, I’m more comfortable with Cumpton & Worley on the mound right now, even though EV’s stuff is much better.

  80. Maz In Iowa says:

Too bad Trout does everything else better that has a stat and he’s only 22

  81. Jim S. says:

I actually think we are on the verge of seeing a lot more bunts vs shifts throughout MLB. No reason not to give it a shot with no strikes on you.

  82. JRay3 says:

Pirates obviously do not think much of Ryan Hanigan and his arm as they swipe their third base of the game.

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

    Neither did the Reds apparently.

  84. Brandie says:

Waning I was watching the game instead of cooking late dinner. Tonight was yoga night. All of the base running and throwing gaffes have Yakkety Sax playing in my head. Ah. Benny Hill.

Bless you Revvie. Speedy recovery man.

  85. Brandie says:

    That typo was for Revvie.

  86. JRay3 says:

Although Ike Davis is 0-2 tonight, he gets a productive out in first at bat by getting the RBI, and now another productive out on the deep fly to center to get Cutch to third with only one out.

Chance now to get him in a couple of different ways now.

  87. JRay3 says:

Milo – I don’t recognize you with the curve ball of Archie Bunker.

  88. Jim S. says:

The teams in the NL have to agree to it. I don’t think it is happening any time soon, as it would increase payroll.

  89. Milo Hamilton says:

    Just following instructions. :)

  90. Dejan Kovacevic says:

It’s all possible — and then some — by using Facebook comments.

  91. Florida Steeler says:

Joe Maddon said before the game on the Rays channel “we will have our hands full tonight. This team can really hit-can you imagine a really good hitter like Pedro Alvarez batting seventh?”.
Maybe Joe will take Pedro straight up for Price if he likes him so much??

  92. JRay3 says:

Word must be getting around baseball about JHay, as he draws the four pitch walk as Cobb did not appear to want to give him a hittable pitch.

  93. Milo Hamilton says:

    BOOM !

  94. Eric Fullam says:

Who goes when walker comes back ??

  95. Andrew says:

Just pointing out the Marte’s base running despite frustrating mistakes is valuable.

  96. Dejan Kovacevic says:

I wish Pedro would show more emotion when he homers on the very first pitch after the opponent issues a four-pitch walk to get to him.

  97. Jim S. says:

    Ladies and Gentlemen: Pedro Alvarez.

  98. Maz In Iowa says:

    Pedro with an RBI!!

  99. JRay3 says:

And everybody’s favorite punching bag, just crushes a three run bomb to dead center and Bucs blow it open 6-1.

    El Toro!

  100. JRay3 says:

    or 3

  101. Andrew says:

Ground ball rates stabilize very quickly.

  102. Thundercrack says:

    DFA Pedro

  103. Dom says:

I never lost faith in Pedro.

  104. RB says:

I would still sit Pedro when Walker is back. One homerun does not a season make.

  105. JRay3 says:

    +24, yeah right!

  106. Karen22 says:

LOL! And next up he hits a three-run bomb. Most frustrating player on the Pirates.

  107. pattonbb says:

Yea, keep throwing Pedro fastballs. Please.

  108. Jim S. says:

Glad to see you back here, Milo.

  109. radio wave says:

    Everyone else did.

  110. Wild Bill says:

Pirates not terribly impressed with Cobb’s last two starts.

  111. Karen22 says:

    I think he’s a robot.

  112. JRay3 says:

Well through just the first three innings of this series it appears Joe Maddon knew what he was talking about.

  113. Milo Hamilton says:

This Lee J. Cobb is one angry man.

  114. pattonbb says:

    He’s mad at his catcher/coach.

  115. JRay3 says:

And who says JHay can’t play defense, shows both range and flashes leather with a great diving play at second.

Quickly turning into a fan favorite.

  116. Patrick(ri) says:

    It is a shame he is such a liability . . .

  117. Thundercrack says:

He showed emotion when he ran through the receiving line in the dugout.

  118. Florida Steeler says:

Let’s hope the Bucs can keep it up. Rays announcers cannot believe this team is 8 or 9 games behind!!!!!

  119. Nancy52 says:

Not on Facebook, either. Old foggie that I am don’t even have a smart phone.
I’d end up just lurking ….which I do mostly but would never comment again.

  120. cleav says:

If harrison continues this does it affect walker/Alvarez extensions?

  121. cberry88 says:

I am in my mid-twenties and am also not on any social media.

I believe this blog is perfect the way it is or was before switching the comments to newest first. Reading the comment section on my iPod and computer is now very frustrating having to scroll the entire way to the bottom and reading upwards.

I have been reading DK’s blog since his time over at the PG and although I do not post much, I would hate to see unnecessary changes just for the sake of keeping things fresh or whatever the reason is.

The fact that we have been having more new contributors is great. I just don’t think we, as a blog/community, need to change to make ourselves better. The people on this blog is what makes it great (both old users and new users). I believe changing the format too much will only drive people away.

  122. JRay3 says:

I’m sticking to my wish to see him play at SS for a little bit while his bat continues to play, or until he shows he truly can not field the position.

  123. The Gunner says:

    Let’s hope for 2 things:

    1) this is the start of Pedro’s hot streak and
    2) Volquez doesn’t blow a 5 run lead

  124. Patrick(ri) says:

Great avatar. Now, can you find one of “meathead” for T C?

  125. cberry88 says:

Oh, almost forgot to mention; if you’re a new user then head over to and create an avatar for your profile.

  126. RB says:

They MUST extend Walker, but they shouldn’t extend Alvarez. Alvarez too inconsistent for this Pirates team and would probably excel on the right American League team.

  127. lonely libertarian says:

He actually smiled in the dugout…

Power is a rare thing – witness the lame performance by the “first base solution”…

Pedro haters are what they are – they are why Joey Bats is in Toronto – and read some of the crap that was written about Clemente in the early 60s…
Stuff Pittsburgh cannot and should not be proud of…

  128. Milo Hamilton says:

Cutch’s dad getting some face time during Holmes & Taillon interviews.

  129. Wild Bill says:

Root making up for the lack of Pirate supporting children to put on tv by interviewing actual baseball players.

And Neil should cut back on the caffeine intake.

  130. Nate83 says:

I even like him and at the beginning of this season not so much. Actually was my least favorite guy on the team. Lower then Snider. Kudos to him for working hard and proving me wrong. I have to admit they must find him 4 or 5 starts a week when Walker comes back.

  131. Jim S. says:

    Both good thoughts, Gunner.

  132. JRay3 says:

But just 3.5 back of a playoff spot and the Cardinals lost two of their starting pitchers for awhile. Still a lot of baseball and Bucs about to get healthy with Walker and Cole returning.

  133. Jim S. says:

I saw that. He has to be living the life.

  134. Patrick(ri) says:

Agreed, but it does not seem to bother him to play all over the field. Just rotate him, with a day off every so often, to keep everybody fresh.

  135. Wild Bill says:

Did you guys see Polanco take two bunny steps in the middle of his stealing second?

  136. Jim S. says:

I’m liking Marte going the other way tonight.

  137. Anthony says:

Ride out the Alvarez arbitration years, then give a qualifying offer to get a pick. I doubt he’ll take the qualifying offer with Boras as agent.

  138. JRay3 says:

I don’t know if it affects is as much as it shows the team they may have a ball player that is capable of being more than a utility guy on the roster.

Pirates management has shown that it is only willing to pay what their perceived value of a player is to this point, so that probably prices Alvarez out of the equation unless he tells his agent he truly wants to stay at a team friendly price, not likely.

As for Walker, I think the team makes a pitch to him, question will be will it be enough.

  139. Wild Bill says:

  140. lonely libertarian says:

12 HRs and you sir are an idiot – post will be censored I am sure – but nobody else on this team has the potential to hit 40+ HRs
    NOBODY ….

He may not do it – but you have to keep him and support him because he is a game changer…

  141. Jim S. says:

And, it’s a good point, Andrew. He got a double on a ball that maybe 2% of the league does.

  142. Thundercrack says:

I thought Neal Huntington is the reason why Joey Bats is in Toronto. I didn’t realize it was the ‘haters’

  143. Thundercrack says:

It will be interesting to see what Pedro and his agent think his perceived value is

  144. lonely libertarian says:

Look at aging curves before u drop a lot on Walker…

Pedro is a non-starter – his agent will spin the next contract way out of the Bucs range – nothing we can do about it….

He will be very wealthy – and probably not a whole lot better than what he is now for the Bucs…

But you gotta remember “Chicks love the long ball” – and 30 or so times a season Pedro delivers…

  145. Brandie says:

Still waiting on his expiration date as determined by fantasy managers.

  146. Wild Bill says:

    Brandissima! How are yinz?

  147. Vstewart82 says:

Any chance a starting pitcher becomes trade bait once all healthy? Or will someone go back to minors?

  148. Maz In Iowa says:

Moving Marte back to 2nd was a great move! The 3 table setters at the top of the order would be great if the Bucs had a clean up hitter.I hope Walker is the guy.Whoever bats clean up next year should have at least 100 RBI!

  149. Dejan Kovacevic says:

The post won’t be deleted, but you will if there’s another personal attack on a poster.

  150. Patrick(ri) says:

What are the odds pitchers will be willing to look like a mushroom on the hill? Some kind of a hockey or face mask “light” would offer more protection, I would think?

  151. Nate83 says:

Pedro batted .255 in May and in June going into tonight he was batting .275 with an OBP .359.

Reality doesn’t always match perception. He is tied for the team lead in HR’s and second in RBI’s. His strike out rate is way down for the year and he has a very unfortunate BABIP that is almost guaranteed to improve. The guy is starting to heat up and many want to bench him. I don’t think he is worth re-signing for the amount he will end up getting but this team needs his bat in the line up and not on the bench while they have him before he leaves or is traded.

  152. Jim S. says:

Mo have no interest in Facebook commenting. My wife is on Facebook and I’ve never even looked at her page.

  153. Nevres says:

We should leave Tampa with David Price

  154. DJ says:

    Corn on the Cobb?

    Shuck him.

  155. Maz In Iowa says:

  156. DJ says:

DK: Are format changes being driven solely by mobile devices? For as much as you seem to dislike the insanity of Twitter, just wondering why that “world” would be catered to over bloggers.

  157. Mark (@mjc4480) says:

DK, ya finally broke me down, I have stepped outside of the 140 character prison. LET’S GO BUCS!

  158. Brandie says:

Feelin’ fine Untamed William. What’s shakin’?

  159. Jim S. says:

Sorry. I don’t know who Mo is. Maybe the bartender on the Simpsons. But, I have no interest in Facebook.

  160. wsamcap says:

Just listened to 1st 4 innings on XM radio. Not only did Rays’ announcers praise Bucs (except for Marte running gaffe in 1st), but I avoided seeing the ugliest baseball venue in MLB history.

  161. RB says:

Pedro lacks consistency, which is what this team needs more than anything. He’s been so up and down that you can’t rely on him to come through when he’s needed. Our most important need in the batting order is a guy who can drive in Cutch on a consistent basis. Pedro is not that guy. His inconsistent hitting combined with the fact that he’s an error machine leads me to think he isn’t right for this team.

As for me being an idiot, there are quite a few people who agree with sitting Pedro.

  162. Mark (@mjc4480) says:

If Alvarez truly gets going, this team’s offense is as dangerous as any in the NL.

  163. Milo Hamilton says:

    Unfortunately that would be kidnapping.

  164. Wild Bill says:

Not real used to playin with a lead, but I like it. Hope you do too.

  165. Jim S. says:

I’m thinking somewhere in the 9 figure world, TC – assuming he keeps pounding 30+ jacks.

  166. Dejan Kovacevic says:

THE NUTTINGS. It’s plural! And evil!

  167. DJ says:

Love the avi, Milo. And I agree with you on the format changes.

Wonder if this could be put to a real vote.

  168. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    Oxygen’s available if needed, Cerny.

    It’s about time, anyway. Welcome!

  169. Brandie says:

They gotta seal the deal and bring home the bacon. Mmmmm. Bacon!

  170. Florida Steeler says:

Ugly part of town, ugly on the outside and inside. A horrible place, but little effort to do anything because of tea party politics and a population that really does not care. MLB should force the issue; otherwise, nothing will get done.

  171. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Mobile is skyrocketing. The numbers are incredible.

But there’s no catering. I’m looking for a solution that works — or can work — universally.

  172. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    Busted! Less than 140!

Come on, man, breathe a little!

  173. Andrew says:

Agree with this, Pirates don’t really need a Stanton like performance (nor is Alvarez capable) but some power lower in the order could really increase the run totals. Now about the pitching…

  174. Brandie says:

I see the Volquez-Wagon is still pitching. :)

  175. RB says:

I agree. But Alvarez would have to get it going and keep it going, which he has had difficulty doing in the past.

  176. cberry88 says:

It’s been great to see all the new members recently. If you want to have an avatar just go to and make a profile. It’s quick, easy and you won’t have the grey and white silhouette next to your name.

  177. RB says:

Thanks! I was just wondering how to do that.

  178. Thundercrack says:

Maybe it will happen when Bud leaves

  179. Milo Hamilton says:

Have they completed the psychiatric evaluation of Ron Hextall yet ?

  180. Lad 9 says:

Yes. He has been confined to an asylum – Philadelphia!

  181. Maz In Iowa says:

Where’s the Dingbat?Or did you just stifle her?

  182. Jim Bergreen says:

Does anyone really like the homerun derby? To me, the most boring all-star event of all the boring all-star events. Although I may be willing to concede that the actual Pro Bowl game might be worse.

  183. Milo Hamilton says:

She’s at Ferguson’s Market picking up some cling peaches in heavy syrup.

  184. wsamcap says:

OK, I did that, and I still look grey & white

  185. DJ says:

Often wonder why teams throw anything other than curves or sliders to Pedro.

Would take my chances with that steady diet every time.

  186. cberry88 says:

I posted this below in response to Milo’s comment that he does not have Facebook or Twitter. Since it was a late reply I thought I’d post it again.

    June 23, 2014 at 8:29 PM

  187. JRay3 says:

Quite the bounce back performance from Volquez this evening, who has been very efficient and probably can go another inning or two.

  188. Milo Hamilton says:

There’s little doubt in my mind that Pedro could play shortstop.

  189. Thundercrack says:

We welcome you with open noses

  190. Jim Bergreen says:

    That is a definite mystery!

  191. Gene-Zo says:

Hope she didn’t have any problems with those wayward shopping carts … and she remembered to get your beer.

  192. Andrew says:

He sees the least fastballs in the majors.

  193. Maz In Iowa says:

Diet and Pedro in the post????fuhgettaboutit

  194. DJ says:

    You’ve got my vote.

Where do I sign the petition?

  195. radio wave says:

Rays radio crew showing frustration of a unexpected long season. Very critical of their team.

  196. Jim Bergreen says:

Ha! He could…..but would commit 3,864 errors.

  197. wsamcap says:

Pedro’s got the arm, not sure of the range

  198. Carlos Danger says:

Is it just me, or does some time DK’s comments show up as the “blue link” DK but other times ther is no link on his name. Seriously are they two separate people? Or is it just me? Feel free to call me insane, you won’t be the first.

  199. cberry88 says:

When you enter your name into the reply field only put in the profile name you used on Then put the email you entered into under the email field on the reply field. Once you do that put your comments in the comments section and hit “post comment”.

    Hope that helped!

  200. Milo Hamilton says:

Thanks for the re-post. I did miss it the first time.

  201. 21sthebest says:

Now, don’t say them two words no more, huh? Start your story after the cling peaches and get on with it.

  202. Milo Hamilton says:

Bet he covers more ground than the guy we have there now. ;)

  203. Jim S. says:

If they ever do a MLB-themed episode of Myth Busters, you need to be on there, Andrew. :-)

  204. DJ says:

Jim, Andrew & Maz: Great posts all.

And I could have bet my right arm that Andrew would have the stat. One reason I love the blog and hope the old format sticks.

New motto: Don’t tread on us!

  205. Maz In Iowa says:

My little mind doubts Pedro could play shortstop there

  206. DJ says:

    . . . and + + + to Jim too.

  207. Jim S. says:

Be careful she doesn’t let the cart smash into some priest’s car, Milo.

  208. Jim S. says:

    ++++, DJ.

  209. cberry88 says:

Haha I have noticed that and wondered whether or not it was an imposter.

  210. Flbucco says:

Tonight’s game is a perfect example of why you need Pedro…

Volquez is a much better pitcher with a 5 run lead than he would be with a 1 or 2 run lead…

No he won’t do this every night and he will look awful a lot – but NOBODY on this roster has the POTENTIAL to hit more home runs than he does…

I don’t want him to be consistent – I want him to be an unknown – a disrupter – I would love to see him get back to pulling everything and pummeling the Clemente Wall – this hitting to all fields and striking out less is not what will make him a wealthy guy…

  211. wsamcap says:

I think the blue is/are all th empty seats at the Trop tonight

  212. Lad 9 says:

It must have been the heavy syrup……

  213. Andrew says:

Started my lunch by looking at some news stories but decided I would rather look at Marte and Alvarez splits. DJ is right maybe they should throw even less.

  214. Jim S. says:

    He-he-he, Brandie!

  215. DJ says:

The ball looks like it rockets on that carpet.

    They should switch to shag.

  216. Milo Hamilton says:

    You guys are great.

  217. Andrew says:

Volquez should thank his defense tonight.

  218. KING says:

Excellent to see Pirates up 6-1 vs. the Rays. Hopefully, we won’t have to worry about another Grilli blown save. Volquez pitching strong tonight but against this Rays team…Who knows the real truth.

Pirates batting order really strengthening everyday. It’s good Cutch,Walker,J-Hay,Marte were nicked up during the season. They should be strong for the dog days of August. The Pirates & Reds are teams nobody wants to face. Both struggled with some injuries but the main guys back. KING

  219. cberry88 says:

I’ll be going door-to-door tomorrow around the Pittsburgh area so make sure you’re home.

  220. Brandie says:

    Hey Jimmy Sprinkles!

  221. Carlos Danger says:

Same here! Just sayin. DK can you confirm? Not sure why that would change.

  222. theplanisworking says:

    Nice to see …….

    1) the Bucs with a lead, and
    2) Milo with an Archie avatar.

Just a quick thought on the Facebook thing ……… when most blogs switch over to that particular format, it seems that at least 50%, and sometimes much more, of the readers/posters go away. Just a thought.

And yes, I just yelled for some kids to get off my lawn…………

  223. Jim S. says:

That’s a no for me, Jim B. But, my 12 yr old son still loves it. I suppose it has it’s audience. I can definitely do w/o Chris “Back, back, back” Berman.

  224. Brandie says:

A sentence I thought I would never see. Let us hope this defensive awakening can be maintained.

  225. hockeymonster says:

Holy shit. Milo is Archie Bunker!!! HAHAHA!!!!

  226. Brandie says:

    Good evening Father Plannigan.

  227. HERESY! Brownie is crediting Joe Maddon with the over-shift on the Root broadcast! Say it ain’t so!

  228. Maz In Iowa says:

Who is this guy and what did he do with Volquez??

  229. DJ says:

Was waiting for someone to say “He’s a professional hitter” or “The good hitters always adjust” or some nonsense like that.

Until he proves he can hit either pitch consistently, that would be my default mode.

  230. Jim S. says:

Good for Volquez. He let some runners on tonight, but pitched a tidy 7 innings on a night where Watson and Melancon both needed a rest. Hopefully, those guys won’t be needed to close this out.

Does anyone have a guess as to what Joe Maddon is worth on the open market? He’s been loyal to Tampa, but I bet about 25 teams would fire their manager tomorrow to get him.

  231. Lad 9 says:

BRANDIEEEEEE and PLANDIEEEEEEE! All we need is Jandy. Good evening my friends. Enjoyable game for our favorite nine this evening.

  232. Brandie says:

Favorites was when Archie asks Louise Jefferson what she thought of The Julia Show last night. She responded fine…and how did he like Doris Day?

    Enlightening Racial Discourse. :)

  233. Milo Hamilton says:

Notice how Pedro hits a ball 400+ feet & suddenly all of his throws are perfect. Like Yogi says, “90% of the game is mental & the other half is physical.”

  234. Jim S. says:

    Hey, plan.

  235. Carlos Danger says:

DK. Help me out. Sometimes your name shows up as a blue link. Other times it doesn’t. Are the other ones imposters? Or what are the criteria to tell if it is really the man, the myth, the legend?

  236. DJ says:

You have my proxy and I’ll save you the trip.

  237. hockeymonster says:

Totally agree. But I like andrew’s idea to have the game threads as newest 1st.

  238. Brandie says:

Should have went with Laura Plannigan.

  239. theplanisworking says:

    Good Evening, Queen Muppet.

Being the Bucs have a nice lead, I will be turning in early tonight, so I do not jinx them. After all, what fun is it to yell for people to get off my lawn, if I don’t go to bed early also?

Continue to knock em dead, Raisin Bran, and keep Reverend in your prayers.

  240. Maz In Iowa says:

Maddon is one of those mangers that refuses to throw his players under the bus….is always positive.Doesn’t care what the press says…..agrees with his GM.Hmmmm

  241. The Gunner says:

    A couple things for you:

    1) We got 7 good innings out of Volquez
    2) Pedro finally got a dinger and had a good night in the field

  242. hockeymonster says:

  243. Brandie says:

Revvie is my heart. You take care Plando Calrissian.

  244. cberry88 says:

I mentioned earlier that I don’t have a Facebook account (deleted it a couple years ago).

I am in my mid-twenties and most of my friends are leaving Facebook and Twitter in droves. This is both because employers are scrutinizing social media sites and also because new media sites are popping up all the time (not sure what they are because I really don’t care and would rather interact face to face).

Unfortunately there aren’t any kids outside that I can yell at.

  245. Jim S. says:

You don’t suppose Volquez was cleaning pine …. off his hat? Never mind.

  246. radio wave says:

Ev over 100 pitches. Why do I get anxious when it’s hit at pa?

  247. Breakthestreak says:

Volquez coming out for ghd 8th???

  248. theplanisworking says:

    Hi Jim.

Good to see you on here.
    Glad you enjoyed Seattle.
Hope you didn’t need a parka while there.

Like I told Brandie, I yelled at some kids, now to bed.
Gotta get prepared to wake up at 3AM for my prune juice. ;)

  249. Jim S. says:

So, now Russell Martin takes left-handed practice swings in the on deck circle?

  250. DJ says:

Not on Facebook but any blog with that format I just skip over it and never post.

  251. Thundercrack says:

Did you say you are not on twitter?

  252. theplanisworking says:

Evening Lad, from the home of the 2014 State ……. oh, you know the rest of it. :D

  253. Jim S. says:

Ok, planet Hollywood. Take care. Drop back in more frequently, please.

  254. Milo Hamilton says:

I am not. Just a twitter eavesdropper.

  255. hockeymonster says:

    Pedro made contact?

  256. Jim S. says:

    Excellent, 21.

  257. Lad 9 says:

You better believe it! Canes forever! Don’t know if you heard it early in the game, but Brownie gave a shout out to five just graduated Bethel Park seniors that were in attendance at the Trop this evening. Was proud to say I coached everyone of them at some point while they were growing up.

  258. In reference to Milo Hamilton’s avatar of Archie Bunker: Who’s old enough to remember watching All in the Family?

  259. Maz In Iowa says:

    Cripes he even walked

  260. Jim S. says:

Lionel and George Jefferson were two if my favorite TV characters ever.

  261. Maz In Iowa says:

    Lunchbox el fuego

  262. Jim S. says:

The new twitter friends you invited over – in addition to all your twitter friends that were already here – are quite an orderly and polite bunch, DK. They gave added to the atmosphere here the last few nights IMO.

  263. radio wave says:

    Surprised Ev came back out.

  264. radio wave says:

    All us geriatrics.

  265. Patrick(ri) says:

Too bad His range is so limited.

  266. JRay3 says:

Just does not take a play off that JHAY!!!

And Volquez goes 8 innings tonight and gives the pen a much needed breather….three outs from three straight!

  267. tcb says:

Walker does not make the play Harrison just made, IMHO.

  268. DJ says:

. . . check for the silverware before you go to bed tonight, Jim.

  269. Patrick(ri) says:

    jH, not EV, of course.

  270. JohninOshkosh says:

Tim Kurkjian just ran the sausage race at Miller Park. Finished last. Where is Randall Simon when we need them.

  271. JohninOshkosh says:

  272. Breakthestreak says:

JHey- what a play!!! Dam! Web Gem of the month

  273. JRay3 says:

    Nor does Mercer

  274. Baywatch says:

I honestly have tears in my eyes after watching JHay make that play! He has really inspired me – to WHAT, I don’t know … Oh yeah! To cry!

  275. Maz In Iowa says:

Chasing Teddy at the Nationals park

  276. tomf says:

and that was another ESPN Top Ten play for Harrison

  277. Carlos Danger says:

    Get on the floor!

  278. Maz In Iowa says:

    The Legend continues!

  279. JRay3 says:

Seeing eye single for Polanco, who now has a hit in 12 of his 13 pro games.

  280. Jim S. says:

I hereby apologize to JHay and those who believed in him as a starter all along. The guy has been simply amazing wherever they put him. Every d*mn night.

I’m sold. Find him a spot in the lineup 4x a week, Clint.

  281. Lad 9 says:

Bay, I understand. He is the little engine that could!

  282. Baywatch says:

Greg Brown and that ball dropping into the Bermuda Triangle! Smh

  283. Jim S. says:

Thanks, DJ. Just noticed we’re missing that weird shaped knife that I think is for jam.

  284. DJ says:

Know the baseball gurus on the blog have been down this path so pardon me for posing these questions:

    1. If you’re Bucs GM, what’s the max you pay to keep Martin in town — both annually and term?

    2. If three years (or more), do you think it would be realistic in latter part of the term to spell him OR play him at third base and would that factor into your consideration of max term?

  285. Maz In Iowa says:

    Got my Polanco/Marte/Cutch decoder ring!

  286. Patrick(ri) says:

+++ in return! Jim, I promise to lay off the sarcasm, even though none of it was directed at you. I will turn my attention to Brock Holt up here, where he was, to a lesser extent, subjected to doubts.

  287. JohninOshkosh says:

I remember, but I was just a young ‘un.

  288. DJ says:

. . . thinking Clockwork Orange at your house tonight.

  289. JRay3 says:

In a perfect world, I would be happy if team offered him a three year deal at 33-36 million, would like it better if the third year was a club option with a buyout attached.

I would go into the deal banking on getting him for about 120 games a season, and really would not have much interest in him playing third unless it was an emergency.

  290. Tom P. says:

Me, although I was a kid and my dad was watching more than I was.

  291. Nancy52 says:

Not only All in the Family but the Saturday comedy block….in the days when there was must see TV on Saturdays.

  292. Baywatch says:

    Evelyn DeWayne Volquez!

  293. Arriba Wilver says:

I can’t decide whose glasses I like better–Joe Maddon’s or Jim Rutherford’s. (For you hockey guys that is GMJR)

  294. Milo Hamilton says:

    Vance Worley’s.

  295. DJ says:

Thanks, JRay. That’s slightly higher than I imagined but likely more realistic.

Cannot see him looking for / getting anything less than 3 years. I was pegging $30 mill / 3 yrs but 3 years with a club option on the third at your range (IF he’d agree) sounds reasonable.

  296. Thundercrack says:

And you people wanted to DFA Jeanmar Gomez

  297. Maz In Iowa says:

    Brauns are losing

  298. JRay3 says:

Behind eight solid innings turned in by Edinson Volquez and an 8 run, 10 hit offensive outburst led by Pedro Alvarez blast, his 12th of the year, the Buccos take the opener of this three game set in Tampa 8-1 and there was nooooooooooooo doubt about it.

With the win the Bucs are back at the .500 mark at 38-38 and have won three straight games. The Bucs are now 17-20 away from PNC.

The Pirates will go for their second consecutive series win and fourth out of their last five series, tomorrow night when Jeff Locke takes the hill for the Pirates.

    Go Bucs!

  299. Patrick(ri) says:

Tomorrow night. Same Bat Station. (Or pigeon?)

  300. Karen22 says:

  301. radio wave says:

Finally a laugher. Good game fun blog.

  302. Maz In Iowa says:

2 games in a row without an error

  303. Andrew says:

I’m bearish on Martin’s offense going forward, but given that he excels at all defensive aspects if he can hit around league average or even a little under from ages 32-34, he provides a lot of value. The Pirates should be able to afford a Ruiz like deal (a bit of different skill set) which was 3 years $26 million, with an forth option year. I’d be fine with $30-33 million, I think $36 is high but, the goal is to build a winning team not the most efficient team.

I don’t think hits well enough now to play third, if the Pirates get 120 games behind the plate and 500 PAs that is a fair deal.

  304. Arriba Wilver says:

    Vanimal doesn’t count. :-)

  305. Arriba Wilver says:

I wonder if Edinson was smiling on the bench last night?

  306. dennis g says:

They had the “Boudreau” shift in 1946 and it was used against Ted Williams who is said to never have hit to the opposite field against it. Boudreau is said to have drawn it up between games of a doubleheader where Williams hit 3 HR’s and had 8 RBI’s in the first game. (It is not clear how the shift deters HR’s but there you are.) Boudreau later said he intended the shift to be a psychological ploy. In any case Williams walked twice and grounded out. For the season he hit .342 and won the A.L. pennant.

Prior to Boudreau “inventing” it the shift was used in the 1920’s also.

  307. dennis g says:

What does the prejudice exhibited toward Clemente in 1955 – 1960 have to do with criticism of Pedro? Do you think people are anti-Pedro because he is from the D.R. or New York? Or because he is emotionless after failure? Or because after five years of very, very high expectations the fans are ready to try someone else who seems to offer a better chance of success? That was a very silly comparison.

  308. KING says:

Pirates blast the Rays 8-1!!! Raise the Jolly Roger!!! Neal H has the golden touch the last few years. Volquez 5 wins for a 5 starter. Easily could win 10-12.
Saved a cool 25-35 million not signing AJ,Morneau,Buck,Byrd ETC.
Snider,Tabata,J-Hay,Marte etc all producing. This is a good problem to have.

Trading J-Hay would be stupid. You lose his spirit & his magic. Lose his talent too.

38-38 record!!! Pirates should roll now. KING

  309. dennis g says:

I disagree. How many RBI’s does he have in June? Tonight was his 21st game in June and he has 10. (In 4 games – in 17 games he had zero.) Here is a curious stat about Pedro; in his career thus far Pedro has had 20 IBB’s. Dale Berra, Jose Lind, Jerry May and Tony Pena all had 19 in one season. I think that says it all about Pedro right now. No one is afraid of him. They do not necessarily need his bat in the lineup. If they can find someone else to hit .275 and keep the throws in the playing field they more than break even. Pedro needs help and the best place to get it is in Indy.

  310. hockeymonster says:

    :scratching head: :)

  311. dennis g says:

Why not try JHay. He makes great contact and hits the ball hard almost every time. He does not strike out a lot and is able to hit a sacrifice fly if called upon.

  312. dennis g says:

Bear in mind the Rays are one of the worst hitting teams in MLB.

  313. dennis g says:

Another benefit of course is the opportunity it presented to JHay to expose himself to management. Please don’t misinterpret that.

  314. dennis g says:

Mercer is excellent at that type of play and has much longer legs. I say he does make it. Nevertheless I love having JHay out there somewhere every night. Prefer he play third, would settle for first.

  315. dennis g says:

He inspires a sense of pride in Pirate baseball.

  316. dennis g says:

Jeanmar is the Rodney Dangerfield of the “Shark Tank.” I have been sold on him since the outstanding long relief and occasional starts of last year. Sometimes when he comes in in a lost game he does not seem to have it, but when he comes in to relieve early in a game which is still on the line he has been excellent.

  317. Stlrfanrc (Ryan) says:

I’ve been too busy playing games. Can’t believe the score.

Nice to see Pedro with a 3 run blast.

That’s why he starts. Possibilities are endless with him.

  318. Maz In Iowa says:

Morneau has 12 HRs and 51 RBI

  319. Maz In Iowa says:

    Also hitting .302….2 year contract for 12.5 million.Yeah wouldn’t want 25 HRs and 100 RBI and about 65 strikeouts from a 1B for 6 mil/year.

  320. DJ says:

I checked, AW, and he opted for a stone-cold Cole pre-start look. And what a difference, right?

Glad he reads our blog. Only now he’ll fumble with the posting format.

  321. KING says:

The Pirates have a good 10-15 million in reserve by not signing all those free agents. Smart move. Can use the money at trade deadline.

On some of the free agents, Polanco was going to start in RF when he arrived. Say they signed Byrd 2 yrs 20 mill. What would they do with him now?

Morneau is revisionist history. He would look good in Pirates uniform but how much are his numbers inflated by Coors field & the spacious field. Rockies are going nowhere as usual.

AJ was smart to take the Phillies big deal before he retired. Struggling with injury & Pirates made the right call in the end.

Neal H has a handful of aces. All he has to do is acquire the right pieces to make Pirates a champion. KING

  322. DP says:

Was at the game last night. Tampa sports radio today has nothing but praise for the Pirates and the way they play.
