  9. Radio wave says:

Set the table, I’ll drive you in.

  10. Bizrow says:

491 locations, we need the Dakotas to have every state in the USA

  11. Maz In Iowa says:

Tooter the Hurdle must be wanting to jump start the Meciless Mercer .

  12. cmat0829 says:

Blue Jays take care of the hated Brewers today, 4-2, on Canada Day in Toronto. So nice to have that Brewers loss behind us, now we just need a Bucco win.

And for those that missed it late last night, the Reds joined the Bucs in losing to the Padres despite giving them just one hit. 1-0 Padres.

  13. Maz In Iowa says:

New GEICO commercial….”words really can hurt you”….PRETTY FUNNY

  14. Wild Bill says:

Thought it would be years before seeing another team lose a game while giving up only one hit. Baseball is indeed a strange game.

  15. Matt hoffman says:

    +++++++
If the Reds were playing the Chinese…….i would root for the Chinese!:)

  16. Maz In Iowa says:

Francisco Liriano will throw a four-inning simulated game Wednesday, manager Clint Hurdle said. Liriano felt good after 54-pitch bullpen Sunday

  17. NMR says:

Chris Capuano cleared waivers today with just over a million bucks owed to him and was released.

  18. NMR says:

The organization should keep him stored safely somewhere away from a Major League diamond working with Jim Benedict on whatever they did last spring.

Simply isn’t any need for him right this moment.

  19. JHadar says:

Biz, Maz, Bay, Radio — looks like the old gang is here for a reunion.

I would love a sweep here. Seems like we’ve been 7 or 8 games out forever despite playing so well the last six or seven weeks. It’s a long season though. Time to make up some ground.

  20. cmat0829 says:

I would like him back for 2 start pre-trade deadline… we need to know if he’s gonna be 2013 Frankie or this 2014 version, that can then be stored safely away from the MLB.

  21. LonelyLibertarian says:

    For your reflection and consideration

Fangraphs Batter data for Bucs for June

Before you peak anyone want to guess who was second on the Bucs in both HRs and RBIs?

    http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=20&type=8&season=2014&month=6&season1=2014&ind=0&team=27&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0

  22. NMR says:

    Not sure I follow, cmat.

  23. Bizrow says:

Good to see you JH, hope you are doing well ;-)

  24. NMR says:

    Clint Barmes?

Ah, I peeked, it’s Clint Barmes!

  25. Maz In Iowa says:

How are things out on the prairie?

  26. Maz In Iowa says:

“Old gang”…..I resemble that remark. :)

  27. Maz In Iowa says:

    77th minute …..no score yet

  28. cmat0829 says:

I would like to think the Pirates need to know if Frankie is part of the rotation for the stretch run or needs to be replaced…. to me, all of the rumors about the Pirates looking for another starter for 2014 really hinge on Frankie’s status.

  29. cmat0829 says:

Soccer is a fun game. One team is absolutely dominating the other…one team looks like they don’t even belong on the same field as the other…and it’s 0-0. Kudos to Tim Howard.

  30. JHadar says:

I haven’t been posting much this season, but keeping up on my reading. Well and healthy as can be expected for an old geezer.

  31. cmat0829 says:

has to be Mercer, Mercer Me right? He was red hot in June.

  32. cmat0829 says:

this game very well could be 3, 4 or 5-0 Belgium. US could go 500 minutes today and not score.

  33. cmat0829 says:

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the US blew an absolute spot-on chance to WIN this in the final minute!!!!

  34. Bizrow says:

    Good to hear, sir

  35. cmat0829 says:

Bucs need to get Gaby going… he mashed LHPs last year… not sure what the stats say, but I think he’s been slumping lately…. this lineup has promise, but Gaby is key.

  36. cmat0829 says:

Marlins should grab him before the Phillies do. He should be better than Randy Wolf.

  37. JHadar says:

True — Even so, every once in awhile someone manages to lose a no hitter ….

But it will take some doing to match Haddix.

  38. LonelyLibertarian says:

Yep – I knew he was hot – but did not realize how hot…

And I would not want to disappoint anyone….

Guess how the first base tandem did for the month ;-)

Wonder when Lambo will be ready?

  39. Wild Bill says:

Tim Howard was heroic in a 2 – 1 loss by the USA.

  40. Pucknutz says:

    US loses 2-1
Still not a soccer fan but the last few minutes of regular time and “extra time” were very entertaining.
US never quit against a superior team. Good job guys.

  41. Pucknutz says:

    Understatement WB ! :)

  42. The US is going home with its head hopefully held up high after giving it all they had vs. Belgium today. And now, let’s hope the Bucs can beat the Diamondbacks tonight.,

  43. Wild Bill says:

Hey Nutzie, you saw that we resigned Goc?

  44. wvstarship says:

While I admire the effort and grit that the US team put out against Germany and Belgium, watching those matches was not unlike Kershaw vs Pedro–the outcome was inevitable.

They still have far to go before they’re legit on the world stage.

  45. Pucknutz says:

No I did not. Gotta think bout that a bit. :)

  46. Milo Hamilton says:

Three Germans today – Ehrhoff, Greiss & Goc. Has to be some kind of record.

  47. Maz In Iowa says:

Maybe the Bucs will be a “powerhouse team” in the near future.

  48. Pucknutz says:

Records are made to be broken.

  49. Good Lambo story DK linked this morning by 24/7. He’s getting close.

  50. DJ says:

NHL Network says Orpik signing worst today. Saw the numbers. Picked up jaw and reattached it.

Good thing thing Caps didn’t hire Ray.

  51. Maz In Iowa says:

Kinda like taking a knife to a gun fight.

  52. Milo Hamilton says:

Little nervous about Locke tonight. Last time he faced these guys they just killed him. But that was an Arizona team at full strength & Locke was leaking oil. We’ll see.

  53. Guess the 97 wins last season didn’t qualify them.

    ;)

  54. pattonbb says:

Nice play by Pedro to start the game.

  55. Maz In Iowa says:

    LOL

  56. Maz In Iowa says:

The Swiss Army Knife leads off

  57. The Gunner says:

I think NH likes Capuano – he’s a lefty. Maybe he’ll finally be a Bucco. I’m sure he’d be willing to go to Indy especially if he has no other nibbles.

  58. Wild Bill says:

If somebody had to be grossly overpaid, I’m glad it was Brooks.

  59. DJ says:

“The words ‘Scuderi’ and ‘trade’ should never come in the same sentence without a laugh track.”

    DKCPOTD.

  60. Wild Bill says:

About time to bring the outfielders in to twenty feet behind the infielders.

  61. Milo Hamilton says:

Absolutely no excuse to not sweep this series.

  62. Baywatch says:

    You got it, Dave!

  63. Wild Bill says:

    Kiss of death, Milo?

  64. Milo Hamilton says:

Just stating a fact. Are they a contender or not ?

  65. War_Horse says:

There was high praise, indeed, for the USA soccer team in the game against Belgium tonight. British commentators said the performance by the Americans was exciting, dramatic and inspired. One after another the experts acclaimed the attacking drive, the will to win and the superb fitness of the U.S. players, especially in overtime. Tim Howard, well-known to British fans by being the goal-keeper for Everton F.C. in the English Premier Division, set a record for most saves in a World Cup match–16. “The Americans can go home now with their heads held high,” as one sportsman put it. Thrilling game to watch.

  66. DJ says:

Love the man and one of my all-time faves, but definition of insanity.

Pure and simple, Brooksie hit the lottery.

  67. Wild Bill says:

I’d love to think so; you’re right that we have to beat bad teams when we get them.

  68. Maz In Iowa says:

Must be waiting till they see Miley the 2nd time around

  69. tomf says:

hard to imagine the US competing for top spot in soccer

the best US athletes don’t play soccer

  70. Pucknutz says:

Sure did. Love the guy… pure hockey player. Has taken a beating for the last ten years , ol body breaking down, certainly not what he was. Still has the fire though.
Nice $$$ cap to a fine NHL run.
    Good luck Brooksie !!!

  71. Milo Hamilton says:

Wonder what they’d look like with LeBron, Adrian Peterson, Mike Trout & RG III running around out there.

  72. The Gunner says:

Good thing Mercer is 6′ 3″ & could handle that throw by Sanchez

  73. Maz In Iowa says:

Time for Nightdro to step up

  74. Milo Hamilton says:

On those close force plays – always look safe, always are out.

  75. Maz In Iowa says:

ummm does powerhouse sound about right? :)

  76. tomf says:

imagine Andrew McCutchen on a soccer field

  77. Wild Bill says:

Pirates looking allergic to curve balls so far.

  78. Flbucco says:

What I love about the first base tandem is how they make up for their awful offense by playing the worst defense in the NL other than GI Jones

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

Someone forgot to tell the Buccos that Wade Miley stinks.

  80. Arriba Wilver says:

Some really good work by the ump. We also were aided by 2 bad slides by the D’Backs.

  81. cmat0829 says:

no doubt, US was thoroughly dominated in every way. That said, Belgium kinda lucky that the US didnt score right at the end and win 1-0. Or tie it up and force PK.

  82. Maz In Iowa says:

    Polanco at goalie

  83. Arriba Wilver says:

    Was thinking the same thing.

  84. Milo Hamilton says:

    We sure can pick em.

  85. cmat0829 says:

Not to be Debby Downer, but while the performance was gritty and inspiring – to the extent the guys tried as hard as they could all the way to the end – how can you not also be deflated that the US is far, far, far away from actually being competitive at the World Cup. I think the commentators are ignoring that obvious fact if all they focused on was the inspirational effort. You can say that about Tim Howard who was fighting for his life back there, but not the whole US squad.

  86. cmat0829 says:

i thought that when i saw the Belgium #9 just bully his way through the whole team and put shots on goal at will.

  87. cmat0829 says:

The umps on those plays are very good. Obvious contrast to their ball/strike performance on many occasions.

  88. cmat0829 says:

The AZ broadcast… a good Steve Berthiume (of ESPN fame) and an annoying Bob Brenly… are talking nonstop about the Bucs moving Pedro to 1B come next season. They are practically Tim Neverett about it (they’ve talked about it like 10 minutes so far of the broadcast)… Brenly claiming that the Pirates are ‘thinking about it’ in the offseason….

  89. cmat0829 says:

he’s had his moments this year, but Bucs should definitely be able to get to him…2nd time around, time to score.

  90. cmat0829 says:

Speaking of Pirates 1Bmen, Steve Fricking Pearce has hit his 10th HR tonight. Yea, that Steve Pearce.

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

They’re making that out to be a great play. He should have been there waiting for it.

  92. Patrick(ri) says:

Is that George Reeves on the Super Slo Mo?

  93. Maz In Iowa says:

    A no hitter?Really?Srsly?

  94. cmat0829 says:

Is this a baseball game or a World Cup game? 0-0 and moving quickly

  95. JohnS says:

Found the key, Pedro throws from his knees. Nice to see a 1B pick up a fielder.

  96. cmat0829 says:

Wow. Locke was trying to pitch around Goldschmidt…and left ball 4 in too good a spot…got lucky that was just a single. Right strategy to not let Goldy beat you, but careful on 3-0…..

  97. The Gunner says:

Don’t they say Sanchez is a good defensive first baseman?

  98. Milo Hamilton says:

Well, at least Gaby makes up for it with his bat.

  99. cmat0829 says:

and then gaby throws a bit wild on the pick off and Jordy with one of his patented ‘don’t try to catch it at all’ moves. was it that bad a throw? i couldnt tell on the AZ replay.

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

    Gift wrapped. Nice job Gaby.

  101. cmat0829 says:

Costly error hurts Locke there… Bucs will have to come from behind.

  102. DJ says:

Yeah, he’s got the fire alright.

In the fireplace. In his $27.5 mill mansion.

  103. Flbucco says:

Late bloomer – think he has been released and resigned a couple of times by the Orioles…

Looks like a WAR OF 3+

  104. Patrick(ri) says:

He had 2 2 run Homers last night. 46 games.

  105. KING says:

Somebody jinx this Miley perfect game. Pirates hitting some balls hard right at fielders. Locke keeping us in this game. J-Hay made a strong throw. Think they got Goldschmitt but it’s 1-0 AZ. Not liking how this game is going. AZ 2-0 on a flare. Pirates must maintain composure. Plenty of game left. KING

  106. Milo Hamilton says:

How about a baserunner first ?

  107. cmat0829 says:

Frustrating. Locke should have been out of the inning, now down 2-0 with a seeing eye single and an absolute duck snort to right field for Hill. TIME TO GET OFF YOUR ASS BUCS AND GET SOME GOOD SWINGS ON THIS SCRUB OF A PITCHER.

  108. Flbucco says:

I just feel out my chair…

“Gaby Sanchez is an OUTSTANDING defensive 1st baseman”
    Tim N.

  109. JohnS says:

How can there not be an error awarded on that Gabby throw?

  110. Arriba Wilver says:

Gaby threw it to the wrong side of the base and Mercer couldn’t see it. That was on Gaby.

  111. cmat0829 says:

must be reading from the notes provided by NH or Gaby’s agent…..

  112. Flbucco says:

Nope – wining something would have..

Counting wins is what losers do

Winners count flags, pennants and rings…

  113. cmat0829 says:

ok, it had to be mercer couldnt see it at all because no excuse not to go for the ball there.

  114. Arriba Wilver says:

    Agree

  115. cmat0829 says:

has to be. or i will personally send an email to MLB to review that scoring. Can’t be a stolen base for Goldschmidt.

Knowing hockey and managing a franchise are two separate things. JR is a question mark as to the process of being a caretaker until one of the three Jr execs cut the mustard. Hockeys version of mad men. Did the Capitals steal the printing press? Orpik is the worst decision since Matt Morris showed up with a 10 million IOU for Dave Littlebrain.

  117. Flbucco says:

    You answered your own question

  118. Arriba Wilver says:

Nah, he was safe, but good throw.

  119. Lad 9 says:

That is at least 4 bad throws to second by the first base duo in the last 3 games. On three of them Jordy saved an error by going high for the ball, but Gaby’s throw was putrid. He has been a complete liability in every way lately.

  120. cmat0829 says:

tired of late bloomers and the Pirates…aren’t we due for some early bloomers?

  121. Flbucco says:

    But, but, but, but…

Gaby is an OUTSTANDING defensive 1st baseman!!!

I KNOW that is true – TN told us!

  122. Milo Hamilton says:

Miley hasn’t had an ERA under 4.00 in any month this season. In 29 June innings he allowed 34 hits & 18 runs. He’s allowed 17 homeruns in 105 innings this year & hasn’t won a game since May 10th.

  123. Flbucco says:

But he came back and redeemed himself with an OUTSTANDING at bat!

  124. Arriba Wilver says:

Even if he had gone for it it was way on the outfield side of second base, but it didn’t look like he could see it till it was beyond him.

  125. cmat0829 says:

Yep, I keep waiting for him to elevate the ball but he seems to be doing a very nice job tonight of keeping it low and on the corners… and the Bucs seem to be absolutely baffled by changeups or offspeed tonight for some reason. Can’t figure it out, but we have 4 at bats to do so.

  126. The Gunner says:

Timmy fails to mention Gaby’s best skill is serving as Marte’s translator

  127. Flbucco says:

Bucs do not like lefties which is surprising because not only is Gaby an OUTSTANDING defensive 1st baseman, but he also CRUSHES lefties

    Tim to bring up,Matt Hague

  128. The Gunner says:

Hey, the Bucs have the modern day Steve Pearce in the person of the hit collector, Matt Hague, don’t we?

  129. cmat0829 says:

two well struck balls that inning, nothing to show for it…. MAYBE next inning we can get something going….. but it’s getting late.

  130. Flbucco says:

    Hmmm…

Make that the third time around ;-)

  131. cmat0829 says:

Matt Hague makes Steve Pearce look like Steve Garvey.

  132. Maz In Iowa says:

Locke doesn’t deserve to lose this way

  133. The Gunner says:

Don’t think so cuz Georgie shot himself in 1959. Maybe it’s a long lost relative.

  134. cmat0829 says:

he’s not goin to. Bucs will tie it up in our favorite inning, the 7th.

  135. The Gunner says:

ha ha – Hague does stink for sure

  136. cmat0829 says:

both miley and locke working VERY quickly tonight, especially Miley. BUCs need to do something to get him out of his rhythm. He is just coasting.

  137. Milo Hamilton says:

Similar to the game he pitched against Milwaukee that they lost 1-0.

  138. Patrick(ri) says:

Inside joke. Gotta watch the Subway video.

  139. Flbucco says:

Locke has been awesome this year – lost two wins earlier due to blown saves I think…

And if they don’t give Gaby an error on that throw and make the two runs unearned it will be a travesty

  140. cmat0829 says:

i agree… and just for my fantasy baseball contest…. who do we petition?

  141. cmat0829 says:

MARTE start it off…BUNT down 3B LINE!

  142. The Gunner says:

The Pirates are making this guy look like he is Randy Johnson – geesh!!!

  143. The Gunner says:

maybe your boy Gaby will get lucky

  144. Milo Hamilton says:

Pretty anemic performance with the bats tonight. David Price, OK. Not this jabrone. Sorry.

  145. cmat0829 says:

Bucs lethargic… maybe the day off wasn’t a good idea??

Not the ump’s fault today, but on that at bat to Cutch, there was not one hittable pitch thrown…and strike 3 call was pathetic with the MVP at bat. For years I suffered the Pirates getting squeezed and chalked it up to the reputation of the opposing hitters, now when it’s our turn, I want the same. Cutch was disrespected in that at bat.

  146. The Gunner says:

So what do you think of Gaby’s last AB?

  147. Maz In Iowa says:

    Close to a perfect game

  148. cmat0829 says:

the official scorer can always change the single to an error on miley…a good throw and mercer was out there.

  149. Flbucco says:

He looks like a Buc reclamation reject…

Keeps ball down in the zone and works both sides of the plate…

  150. Florida Steeler says:

If the black hole at first base and #4 hitter does not improve, it will be a battle to get far above .500.

  151. tomf says:

    8th inning – hot/humid – and Locke still hitting low 90′s

  152. cmat0829 says:

Just my eye test, but it really looks like he is commanding the ball tonight, down in zone, changing speeds, painting corners…. he does not resemble his stats tonight. But still feel like the Bucs have not taken the best approaches at the plate, seem lethargic for some reason.

  153. Flbucco says:

    OUTSTANDING!

  154. pattonbb says:

Maybe the D’bags..er…i mean D’backs will make Miley available at the deadline.

If not for Goldschmidt, there would be nothing to like about this team.

  155. The Gunner says:

    Maz

Locke has pitched another stellar game tonight. Now tonight’s The Slumber Company needs to become the Lumber Company.

  156. cmat0829 says:

Need a bloop and a blast…… got a gut feeling if we can push this inning to Walker’s spot, he is gonna get a big hit.

  157. Maz In Iowa says:

Best pitching performance against the Bucs all year

  158. cmat0829 says:

he’s even more likable when he sports his Louisiana mullet. Check his glove for crawdads….

  159. Flbucco says:

and Gaby Sanchez makes Matt Hague look like Keith Hernandez

  160. cmat0829 says:

ok, solid single breaks up the no hitter speculation (change the earlier mercer hit to error)…. but lets get it started Bucs… Mercer get a hit, then we can BUNT PEDRO. :)

  161. Milo Hamilton says:

As Joe Garagiola used to say, Miley’s pitching like he’s double parked.

  162. Reading says:

That, people, is a base hit. A very rare occurrence in an insurmountable 2-0 game.

  163. Bill_StateCollege says:

    Absolutely.

  164. Flbucco says:

and Gaby Sanchez makes Matt Hague look like Keith Hernandez

  165. Patrick(ri) says:

    Another mediocre hp ump.

  166. Florida Steeler says:

    What the hell????

  167. pattonbb says:

    Great line.

  168. tomf says:

what is worse than the called strike 3 on Alvarez ?

    the Martin steal attempt

  169. Reading says:

Wow. Send tape of that inning to Cooperstown.

  170. Maz In Iowa says:

    Geez Martin

  171. pattonbb says:

    He’s a hell of a ballplayer, though.

  172. The Gunner says:

I agree for sure, FlBucco. I think they may move him at the deadline. You know, there’s a sucker born every minute.

  173. Flbucco says:

I know it is fashionable on this Blog to bash (whine?) about bad calls…

But I am sorry folks – this is a game that rewards aggressive hitting…

I think the guy who got caught looking was the MVP last year – get the friggin bat off of your shoulders and make something happen…

Those pitches were close enough he could not afford to take them

  174. cmat0829 says:

not that miley needs any help, but as the game has gone on, this ump is just getting more and more liberal with what a strike is.

  175. The Gunner says:

This game is as good as over, Maz

  176. Flbucco says:

Oh goody – another episode of Diners, Drive-ins & Dives!

  177. Patrick(ri) says:

    ++

  178. Milo Hamilton says:

Hey, it sure beats grilled cheese every night.

  179. tomf says:

8th inning down 2-0 and they pull stupid $hit like that

  180. Steelag70 says:

Missing an opportunity to gain a little ground in the division….

  181. cmat0829 says:

I think good hitters get to be good hitters because they swing at pitches they can drive….and lay off pitcher’s pitches. If the ump is gonna call that series of pitches to Cutch the way he did, hitters are gonna have a tough time hitting .250. But give Miley all the credit tonight. He has pitched an outstanding game.

  182. Maz In Iowa says:

In the words of Sylvester the cat……”sufferin succotash”

  183. Flbucco says:

No I think the MVP taking a close pitch was worse than both ;-)

  184. Reading says:

This must be a low leverage situation. Hopefully, it won’t be 5-0 soon, although it probably really doesn’t matter.

  185. KING says:

This is a game that stops momentum in its tracks. Locke has pitched very strong but that Mercer play changed the game.

Polanco hopefully will pinch hit in 9th. D’Backs dont have much but they could steal one tonight. Hope for a 9th inning rally. Pedro back to his struggles. KING

  186. Bill_StateCollege says:

A recurring theme so far this year.

  187. cmat0829 says:

Wow, what a frustrating game…. Bucs have hit some balls hard…nothing to show for it… DBacks have gotten every bloop conceivable…..

  188. The Gunner says:

It’s not the 1st time they missed this type of opportunity

  189. cmat0829 says:

i think this game is an example of why they don’t want pedro hitting vs. lefties.

  190. Patrick(ri) says:

For his next trick, how about a big hit in the bottom of the 9th?

  191. cmat0829 says:

Nick Leyva must be coaching 3rd for the Dbacks. Perfect throw from our man JHay but still. Parra was out by 15 feet.

  192. chethejet1 says:

Kirk Gibson looks really weathered as we say. Man some people simply don’t age well. Bucs being shut down and that happens every once in a while. Like they say the other team gets paid to.

  193. cmat0829 says:

i’m not giving up…. come on BUCS! Neil to start it off…Polanco to keep it going…then JHay to the gap to tie it.

  194. Flbucco says:

    True,

    But this game is 0-0
If the OUTSTANDING defensive first baseman makes a pretty basic throw

  195. Milo Hamilton says:

Something else they haven’t done this year, a 9th inning comeback. No sweeps, no winning streaks, no 9th inning comebacks. Not good.

  196. cmat0829 says:

come on polanco, how bout a gapper.

  197. Patrick(ri) says:

One of the few times a bunt for a hit makes sense?

  198. cmat0829 says:

nice… how bout a JHay walk off???????????????????

  199. Patrick(ri) says:

    Or not!

  200. cmat0829 says:

he’s kinda lost his mind too. he is NOT a good manager. happy trails, Gibby. Tony L. is gonna clean house.

  201. Flbucco says:

Bull shit – don’t try and dump that screw up on Mercer – it was all on that OUTSTANDING first baseman Gaby Sanchez!

  202. Wild Bill says:

    This closer any good?

  203. The Gunner says:

Will the legend of J-Hey continue? Now a word from our sponsor.

  204. cmat0829 says:

well, in most games you (might) lose, you hope for ONE good chance… this is OUR CHANCE right here. 2 on, no outs…and JHay and Cutch looming (with Marte, a Dback killer in the middle)… we will have our swings to try to tie or win this….

  205. pattonbb says:

Gibson was one of my favorite players but I think he’s doing a horrible job managing.

  206. cmat0829 says:

    decent, nothing special.

  207. Milo Hamilton says:

Don Zimmer would hit & run. He was unconventional if nothing else.

  208. cmat0829 says:

we need DK for the definitive view, but I think the correct spelling of our hero is JHay.

  209. Patrick(ri) says:

Good grief! Josh is George Reeves.

  210. cmat0829 says:

yep, no doubt about it…one of the truly worst.

  211. Flbucco says:

And why they want Gaby too bat – at least try and be fair – nobody has hit this guy – pointing out Pedro when cutch and Sanchez and lots of others have struggled seems unfair

  212. cmat0829 says:

DRAT. JHay hit that HARD… yet another Bucco ball tonight that was well struck with nothing to show for it. Need a Marte single here to make the Cutch at bat very interesting.

  213. cmat0829 says:

    or take a HBP… please.

  214. The Gunner says:

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  215. cmat0829 says:

A TRIP TRIP TRIP TRIP TRIP TRIP TRIPLE to TIE IT …… Reed inexplicably throws an 0-2 strike to Marte who crushes it….. the worst pitch of the season in MLB by a 1000 miles. ……

  216. Milo Hamilton says:

Andrew McCutchen in late close situations – 1 RBI in 36 at bats.

  217. pattonbb says:

    I love baseball.

  218. Patrick(ri) says:

Whatever Cutch told him must have been good stuff.

  219. cmat0829 says:

absolutely AWFUL pitch by their ‘closer’. but give Marte credit, he crushed it…and thank God the CF didn’t catch that one at the wall, I wouldn’t be able to take that.

  220. Maz In Iowa says:

    Marteeeeeeeee

  221. cmat0829 says:

    not gonna get the chance…

  222. Patrick(ri) says:

    Why not Snider?

  223. cmat0829 says:

IKE or LUNCHIE? and do you send Cutch from 1B?

  224. Milo Hamilton says:

Hey FlBucco, here comes your buddy. :)

  225. tomf says:

    forget Davis

    rather see Cole pinch hit

  226. cmat0829 says:

    ha! pick your poison… lol

  227. Flbucco says:

    Would have been my choice…

But let’s see if this works

    It did

  228. Maz In Iowa says:

Hope they don’t walk the bases full.No way they score that way

  229. cmat0829 says:

    RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE it…. don’t give up Bucco fans….

  230. Wild Bill says:

I’ll be dipped. A win outa nowhere.

  231. Patrick(ri) says:

Gotta like Ike. 2 games in a row with key hits.

  232. Andrew says:

    #cantpredictbaseball.

  233. Bill_StateCollege says:

    A touch of last year!

  234. The Gunner says:

Ike sure made you eat crow, Tom

  235. Maz In Iowa says:

    RAISE IT!!!!!!!

  236. cmat0829 says:

Dbacks announcers were just saying how Marte has just killed them historically… just shocking after how bad he looked in going down 0-2 to Reed…. to have him almost hit the HR on the 0-2 mistake. THANK YOU ADDISON REED for the worst pitch of the year…

  237. Milo Hamilton says:

I really don’t believe that happened. And Guy Frieri gets the W.

  238. Lad 9 says:

    ++++++

  239. tomf says:

    and then some

  240. Lad 9 says:

Totally agree. What a dumb pitch! Raise it!

  241. Maz In Iowa says:

    LOL

  242. cmat0829 says:

    well, there’s your 9th inning comeback…hope it’s part of a massive winning streak . and a sweep.

  243. The Gunner says:

I have to eat crow, too. Earlier I said this game is over.

  244. Major Dad says:

    Wade Miley got Grilli’d

  245. Daquido_Bazzini says:

THAT was a great Pirate win!!!

  246. cmat0829 says:

LETS NOT FORGET THAT JHAY KEPT THE GAME AT 0-2 WITH A BB THROW TO NAIL PARRA AT HOME IN THE TOP OF THE 9TH. HOW BIG WAS THAT???

And kudos to Jeff Locke… on my official ‘starting rotation blood pressure meter’, Jeff has moved to ‘settle in, nothing to worry about’ status.

  247. Milo Hamilton says:

Glad I pointed out they hadn’t done that yet. :) Oh well, back to the Pens raiding the Bundesliga.

  248. Maz In Iowa says:

    What a monster.Franken Ike

  249. Milo Hamilton says:

Gibson should be buried for not bunting Miley there.

  250. twentytwo22 says:

What a clusterfrank top of the 9th by Arizona.
Marte goes from overmatched to hero in one pitch.
3 over and sweep dreams are still alive.

  251. Wild Bill says:

Gained a game on the lovable Brewers as well.

  252. Maz In Iowa says:

Be nice to close the gap on the beermakers before the break

  253. KING says:

Raise the Jolly Roger!!! Pirates steal a win 3-2 vs. DBacks. Boost record to 43-40. Nothing for 8 innings then Pirates strike.

Gibson played it right. He gave Miley the chance to finish it. 2 Men on then went to Reed. Give J-Hay credit. He never quit playing. Throwing out the DBack at the plate proved BIG!!!

Incredible win!!! With Brewers loss, Pirates cut into NL division lead. 7 or 8 now. Polanco was the key. 95% of the players wouldnt have scored on that hit. Tied 2-2. A party for Bucs fans!!! KING

  254. twentytwo22 says:

That catcher was blocking the plate. Polanco had to slide wide and reach his hand back.

  255. cmat0829 says:

Dbacks fans are so numb to his idiocy they won’t even notice. This whole team is just a lame duck situation.

  256. JohnS says:

I am still stunned no error on Gaby. Always good to win. Glad Martel’s HR trot didn’t cost them.

  257. tomf says:

    hook slide

    perfect slide in that situation

our kids practice that exact slide for weeks during the winter

  258. Breakthestreak says:

When Polanco scored the ump never gave the safe sign. Did Polanco touch the plate? I can’t tell on replay. But we win!!! We’ll take it

  259. Maz In Iowa says:

ESPN will be making a big deal of this game.Fact….maybe saying something about the Bucco creep.Which is now in month II

  260. dennis g says:

One of those umps tonight is the one who missed the call in the Galaraga perfect game. He agrees with you that they always look safe. Of course that wasn’t a really close play.

  261. dennis g says:

Second in the ROY voting a couple years ago. He can’t be too bad.

  262. tomf says:

ridiculous if that is not scored an error

  263. Daquido_Bazzini says:

I saw his hand slide over it.

  264. dennis g says:

The replay made it appear as if the ball might have hit Goldschmidt in the helmet. The ball definitely went into the outfield at an angle. Mercer had zero chance to do anything about that ball.

  265. dennis g says:

I think it is a stolen base and I don’t think you can get an error there on either end in that situation. Obviously there is no need for an official scorer if there is no error there.

  266. Bizrow says:

A good homestand is still within sight

  267. Major Dad says:

I was thinking the same thing, was afraid they’d appeal and call him out.

  268. dennis g says:

Bob Walk was talking about that in the game where the Pirates loaded the bases and scored two runs on walks when Starling Marte came up. Marte struck out on an inside pitch at least an inch below the zone. Walk said the call by the umpire was a disgrace because the pitcher (I think it was Niese) had not earned any respect with his pitches and in fact was abominable. If a great pitcher is hitting all the corners he might get the benefit of the doubt. Well that seems to be something that AM is not familiar with. Even though he never complains about a called third strike (according to Brownie) he did tonight and on several other occasions that Brown apparently did not see. If you are going to look at the first pitch cross the middle of the plate, don’t be surprised when that is the only one.

  269. dennis g says:

The winner (though off by an inning.)

  270. dennis g says:

Very, very close. Five more feet by JHay and you get the Kreskin award.

  271. dennis g says:

No one who has tried to steal a base off of him has failed. It certainly makes sense to me to have Polanco steal, unless Marte is just rope-a-doping that pitcher.

  272. cmat0829 says:

I think if the pitcher tries to pick someone off first…and he bounces the throw and the runner gets to 2B, it is ruled an error on the pitcher. Should be same in this situation…runner was obviously going to be out, and Gaby biffed the throw. Should be error.

  273. dennis g says:

Maybe someone actually knows the official scorer rules and whether it is permissible to call an error on Gaby for the throw when they caught Goldschmidt off first. I think in a stolen base situation you can only call an error if the runner gets an extra base. Anyone know for sure?

  274. chethejet1 says:

Stole one. That’s what good teams do. No right to win this one. Polanco just puts the bat on the ball. Simple effective and when he matures, look out. He is rarely out of balance unlike Marte who is on his toes way to much. But like a golf swing, each to his own if it works. Polanco looks like the Latin version of Ted Williams. Hits the ball out in front of the plate.

  275. KING says:

This J-Hay continues to impress. Batting over .300 going into the game. Fielding gems & strong throws to the plate. These coaches watch the ball players everyday. It’s really amazing that J-Hay has been up & down with the big club 3+ years. You would think he would have more opportunity until now.

I remember other callers & I would say J-Hay deserves more playing time. Usually shouted down by the media & radio types that J-Hay was just a “utility player.” That was parroting the company line. J-Hay has proven himself as a regular in the lineup. Batted over .300 in May & June. Definite All Star candidate. A KING salute J-Hay!!! KING

  276. cobra39 says:

So, how’d the game turn out? Anything exciting?

  277. Arriba Wilver says:

    +++

  278. Thundercrack says:

I was at the game and wondered the same thing. I never saw the home plate ump signal that he was safe…and he followed the ball when it was over thrown.

  279. Thundercrack says:

I went to the game tonight. Great comeback.

Has Kirk Gibson been fired yet?

  280. Arriba Wilver says:

And the major reason is people won’t pitch to him.

  281. Arriba Wilver says:

    He stinks—FlBucco/LL.

    :-)

  282. Arriba Wilver says:

    I wondered, too.

  283. Chuck H says:

Two bad throws by Gaby Sanchez and no error given. One got the out though.
    Sweep the DBacks!!!

  284. War_Horse says:

OK. We’re not as competitive as Brazil, Argentina, France and Germany, but “not competitive at the World Cup”? If making it to the group of 16 (something some excellent teams did not do) and putting up a brave fight against Belgium is not competitive, I don’t know what is.

  285. War_Horse says:

    Wow! Was that prophetic!

  286. Maz In Iowa says:

    Nah nothing special.Same old story
