  1. Tom P. says:

If anybody cares, the Brewers just lost 7-4 on a walk-off, two out, three run homer.

  2. Jandy says:

    woop woop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :doin a Monster Mash Dance:

  3. Tom P. says:

    Pirates Lineup

    RF: Gregory Polanco
    LF: Starling Marte
    CF: Andrew McCutchen
    2B: Neil Walker
    C: Russell Martin
    1B: Ike Davis
    3B: Pedro Alvarez
    SS: Jordy Mercer
    SP: Charlie Morton

  4. 21sthebest says:

Edwin Encarnacion might be the best player nobody talks about.

  5. cmat0829 says:

oh, we care. we care. Any day when Gomez and Braun and Roenicke lose is a good day indeed.

  6. Patrick(ri) says:

He nearly blew a hole in the dome. Kintzler just walked off. It was great.

  7. Patrick(ri) says:

Cueto is in a bit of a first inning jam. This could be quite a day.

  8. Patrick(ri) says:

Big jam. He just walked the bases full.

  9. Patrick(ri) says:

Hamilton screwed up a dive and the bases are cleared. I bring these outfielders lots of bad luck.

  10. The Gunner says:

Tonight is a must win for the Bucs. Maybe Pedro will hit a dinger or two.

  11. Thundercrack says:

    Hamilton is no JHay

  12. cmat0829 says:

I am really hoping Pedro hits a monster HR…and makes it very very tough to take him out of the lineup. Will push JHay to SS tomorrow.

  13. Patrick(ri) says:

Speed hurt this time. It is early, but looks good. Come to think of it, it is early July– think I will go do something useful until 7:05.

  14. NMR says:

    Haha, awesome Patrick.

  15. The Gunner says:

I would love to see Pedro hit a couple HRs tonight. The Bucs just have to win tonight – no excuses!!!!

  16. NMR says:

    Absolutely, 21.

FanGraphs did a great comparison last year of him, Pedro Alvarez, and “usable power”.

  17. Jim S. says:

    He’s pretty darn good.

  18. Jim S. says:

    Did he drop the ball?

  19. Jim S. says:

We seem to keep whittling this thing back down to about 6 games over and over. Then, we slip a little and Milwaukee wins a bunch in a row. It is really hard to come back from about 10 games down.

If Milwaukee plays .500 the rest of the way, they end up at 89 wins.

We need to go 46-33 to get to 89 wins.

  20. Tom P. says:

    Diamondbacks Lineup

    CF: Ender Inciarte
    RF: Gerardo Parra
    1B: Paul Goldschmidt
    C: Miguel Montero
    2B: Aaron Hill
    LF: David Peralta
    3B: Martin Prado
    SS: Didi Gregorius
    SP: Chase Anderson

  21. Baywatch says:

Good Chahlie, Bad Chahlie, which one tonight? The guy’s style drives me nuts with his wild pitches and hit batters, but it’s hard to argue with his ERA and he has made good progress since starting out 0-6. I’m still shaking my head at that 9th inning rally last night!

  22. Jim S. says:

Remember when the Pirates were that team that would battle like crazy in the first game of a series vs. a better team on the road, only to find a way to blow it? Then, they got smoked in at least 1 of the last 2 games of the series, and very often got swept? I’m glad that isn’t us now. I hope it is AZ this week.

  23. NMR says:

If you consider hit-by-pitch to be the equivalent of a walk, Charlie would average 4.5 BB/9 this season. Higher than Liriano.

  24. NMR says:

I was pretty impressed with Nick Ahmed at SS for the D’Backs last night. Certainly seemed like he didn’t have any trouble handling the position.

  25. Baywatch says:

Moss 4-4 today with a home run and 2 RBIs. I think the thought of Jose Bautista over there raking for the Rays, and we get Robinzon Diaz is my biggest OUCHY … Moss … Dunno, his doesn’t hurt me as bad, knowing he really had a lot more work to put in after we let him go, before he got better and got a chance.

I will say it always aggravated me the way Moss would come off the bench, and hit a pinch-hit home run; or have another nice game off the bench (granted, in the middle of not much else) – and Russell would put him back on the bench the next day. Hurdle DEFINITELY seems to have more of a reward system than Russell!

  26. LonelyLibertarian says:

Top MLB CF in UZR/150 – Cutch is 17th

  27. Karen22 says:

    YEAH, Baby! :)

    Get it on, Buccos!

  28. Baywatch says:

I know it’s not nice, but I’m hoping Liriano stays away for awhile. At the very least, a very un-Wandy like rehab games assignment where he does NOT come back until he gets it together against minor leaguers!

  29. Karen22 says:

He’s been Schizophrenic Chahlie – one BAD inning & then looks unhittable in the same game. How about
    “Consistent” Chahlie??

  30. NMR says:

I said yesterday that I don’t see any reason for Liriano NOT to spend a few weeks away from a Major League mound with Jim Benedict doing whatever they did last spring.

I think it would be highly unlikely that the team could get by for the rest of the year without him…but right now, he’s just not needed.

  31. NMR says:

    Haha, you’re bad, Karen! ;)

  32. NMR says:

I vote “consistent” as this years “sustainable”.

  33. Maz in Iowa says:

Bay,the thing that drove me crazy about Russell is sort of the same thing about Pedro. The lack of animation.Honestly there were times I would wonder if they should defibrillate JR!An inning would end…I would get something to eat and 5 minutes later Russell would be showing that same glassy eyed stare in the very same position before I left.I swear an army of mosquitos could be feasting on the guy and he’d never flinch>

  34. Jim S. says:

POTD, Maz. You had me rolling with the army of mosquitos comment.

  35. Jim S. says:

I was out for the night and only caught the bottom of 8th + 9th. I’ve heard he had the tools. Would Didi be available? I honestly don’t know how much I like him. Not that much, I don’t think.

  36. Jim S. says:

I’m with you on this, especially since the fill-in starters are getting it done right now.

  37. Maz in Iowa says:

BTW I(meaning me and not necessarily any of my fellow loonies) really think Austin Meadows is going to be very very good.Patient, good power, strike zone discipline, good arm.Hey,what’s not to like?

  38. Karen22 says:

  39. Jim S. says:

Still 3-0 good guys as they move to the 6th in SD. This would be a sweet 3 straight W’s for SD. Sort of takes the sting out of Cincy sweeping SF in 4 straight.

  40. Karen22 says:

    Very, very bad! ;)

  41. LonelyLibertarian says:

Rewards some – others get a pass – others get special demands…
If I were a player the last word I would use to describe Hurdle would be fair…

Pedro is expected to be more consistent…

What are Davis and Gaby expected to do – show up?

  42. Karen22 says:

    Here here!

  43. Jim S. says:

    Sort of a pitch count-helping walk. ;-)

  44. NMR says:

I hear he doesn’t show much emotion, the 6th tool.

  45. Maz in Iowa says:

Even if Cutch and Marte walk(put down those rotten tomatoes)……..they could STILL have an OF of Polanco/Meadows/Bell……IF they resist the temptation of trading either Meadows and/or Bell.

  46. Jim S. says:

Actually, more production should be expected from Pedro than 2 guys who are sharing a position. He’s better than them. More should be expected from the better players, don’t you think?

  47. NMR says:

I’m guessing both would be available with how good Chris Owings looks.

But I wasn’t necessarilly looking at Ahmed as an acquisition, but as a tall (6′-3″) shortstop in general. Lot of talk that Cole Tucker will have to eventually move because of his height.

  48. Jim S. says:

For my money, that was some of Bruce Willis’ best work.

  49. LonelyLibertarian says:

Is he still batting 1.000? – hope he keeps it up ;-)

  50. Kris says:

Not to argue semantics but is JHey not being in the lineup tonight an example of giving another starter a night off?

  51. Jim S. says:

I think Jordy is 6’3″ as well, right?

  52. NMR says:

Fill-in starters and the offense, too.

You just don’t NEED 2013 Liriano when you’re scoring 4 and 5 runs a game. We arenn’t conditioned to think that way, but they’ll be just fine with the starters they have now as long as the offense is clicking.

Now once we get into the stretch run and certainly the playoffs things change, but that’s a long way off.

  53. Thundercrack says:

I think we need the 2013 Liriano. What we don’t need right now is the 2014 Liriano

  54. NMR says:

I’d prefer comps of players that are actually expected to stick at SS in order to justify my hope that Tucker can as well, but you are certainly correct. ;)

  55. Maz in Iowa says:

Davis has been there for a couple months.Pedro for 3 years.I really haven’t followed him(Davis) for long.I really try to refrain from attacking a guy from 2-3 months of samples. We all know what happened with Moss/Joey Bats.Gaby is pretty much what he has been for 3 years.Pedro could turn it around but Boras being Boras means Pedro will have to be unloaded in a couple years. My hope for that is Pedro ramps up his production and the Bucs get a good return when they trade him.

  56. Maz in Iowa says:

yeah.2-2 with a BB both games.

  57. Maz in Iowa says:

    Hey a 3B and 2 2B.BTW he’s fast as well

  58. Maz in Iowa says:

Prolly.I think they play 11 straight days after tonight

  59. Andrew says:

I honestly thought the idea that taller guys couldn’t stick at short died with Ripken. Tulowitzki is 6’3″, Simmons and Brad Miller are listed as 6’2″.

  60. Andrew says:

One thing I’ll say about Russell is he was asked to manage a team as the organization stripped down the major league team and attempt to rebuild the farm system, not a easy task. Still not sure what was with some of those extreme outfield shifts.

  61. NMR says:

This is baseball we’re talking about, Andrew.

Climate changes faster than old opinions.

  62. Maz in Iowa says:

Tyson Ross mowing down Cincy.2 hits/no BB and the Padres leading 3-0 after 7

  63. NMR says:

Yankees are currently half way to their reported plan of spending as much as $15m today on International Free Agents. Their bonus pool was $2.1m.

  64. Arriba Wilver says:

First in votes for All Star game for outfielders.

  65. Maz in Iowa says:

Pirates could be in 2nd place this time tomorrow!!

  66. Maz in Iowa says:

Bullies seem to get their way a lot of the time. They told MLB what they were going to do and the commissioners office just sat idle.Yankees bring in a lot of money for the majors and the yankees got a free pass…as usual. It needs to change in much the same way baseball changed when the Pirates went over slot for players like Josh Bell

  67. Thundercrack says:

Did my earlier post about UZR/150 get deleted?

  68. pattonbb says:

Were there any top international players that didn’t sign with NY? At one time I read they could sign 7 of the top 10 international FAs and up to 15 of the top 30.

  69. Maz in Iowa says:

In the last 22 games, the Pittsburgh starting pitchers have combined to go 11-5 with a 3.10 ERA (139.1ip/48er)…
Since 5/29 the starting staff has gone 16-8 with a 3.56 ERA (1

  70. Milo Hamilton says:

Why is I’ve never heard Yankee fans complain that Derek Jeter lacks emotion ?

  71. Maz in Iowa says:

    It’s Vanimal Eve everyone! :)

  72. pattonbb says:

A few head first dives into the stands and 4 or 5 world series titles will make people overlook such important details.

  73. Milo Hamilton says:

Funny thing is he can’t even play any more and they (me included) still cut him slack.

  74. Maz in Iowa says:

Cincy loses.Pirates are back in 3rd place

  75. Flbucco says:

And an awesome offensive player – but today the outfield defense would be better with him in left and Marte in center and he knows it….

Over time Polanco might be the best CF option – but that is a year or two down the road

  76. Tom P. says:

Dodger lost, too. Pirates could be 1 back in the wild card with a win.

  77. Flbucco says:

I am confused – most everyone here seems to think Pedro sucks – so how is he “good”.

We traded a lot for Ike Davis and everyone told us he is/was good and all that he
Needed was a change of scenery and we had a long term 1st base solution.

Well so far he seems to be really good at flare singles now and then and drawing walks.

He also seems to be very bad defensively – does very little to help his infielders on bad throws and not a lot of range that I can see.

Pedro will leave Pittsburgh and have a very nice MLB career 400+ HR and 1500+ RBI…

  78. Baywatch says:

I mean sometimes he’s like a knuckleballer! He doesn’t seem to KNOW where his pitches are going! And he has like a 3.41 ERA. I think he’s improving!

  79. Patrick(ri) says:

Just tuned in in time to see another outfielder fumble a ball. MLB play? The right outfielders are doing it!

  80. Baywatch says:

Up here, Maz! Glad to meet a fellow Worley Bird!

  81. cmat0829 says:

To me, it is very realistic for the Bucs to get to 90 wins. Whether that does it or not, we will see. But I think the more teams competitive, the better, to keep the win totals down. Worst scenario for the Bucs is like the Cards and Nats or Giants just running up wins and getting to 95 and making it real tough for the Pirates to get there. The more competition, knocking each other off, the better.

  82. Milo Hamilton says:

Pirates pitchers have walked 255 hitters this season. Charlie Morton has walked 15% of them.

  83. twentytwo22 says:

Morton Morton Morton. Leadoff walk after getting a lead. Now pitch out of your mess please.

  84. cmat0829 says:

Jim Bowden just said that the Pirates should both trade Meadows now for Jason Hammel AND promote him to the bigs otherwise they are being cheap.

  85. cmat0829 says:

  86. cmat0829 says:

Bob Walk was the original Whirly Bird, wasn’t he?

  87. Milo Hamilton says:

Got to hit somebody with an 0-2 pitch at least once a game too.

  88. cmat0829 says:

I agree. Morton just has to figure out a way to cut down on the walks. If I had an idea of how, i’d tweet him. But how nice was it to watch Miley last night work quickly and just attack hitters. Morton is the opposite of that. So is Cole.

  89. twentytwo22 says:

    Wild pitch too.

  90. cberry88 says:

Ugh. Whatever happened to Ground Chuck pitching to contact?

  91. Milo Hamilton says:

And people wonder why so many errors are made behind this guy. Maddening.

  92. cmat0829 says:

RE: Ike Davis. A few weeks back, when Khendrys Morales signed with the Twins for a pro-rated $12M (why I have no clue, the Twins have no business signing veterans), it was reported that it came down to the Twins and the Pirates to sign him and in the end he went with the Twins. If that is accurate, and I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, then pretty clear NH is saying one thing re; Ike Davis is the long-term answer at 1B, but pursuing another.

I also think (second source) that after the Bucs acquired Ike in April, one of the national baseball guys said that it ‘didn’t necessarily mean the Pirates are done pursuing 1B upgrades’

I would not be shocked to see a 1B upgrade at the deadline, if one is available. But that is just trying to put 2 and 2 together. And maybe I’m just HOPING for that.

  93. twentytwo22 says:

Struck the pitcher out. 2 away.

  94. twentytwo22 says:

Thank God that is over. 2 0’s for Morton. 7 innings left.

  95. Thundercrack says:

On the pregame show Hurdle told Greg Brown that there has been discussions about Harrison playing SS and he has gotten some reps there.

Clint didn’t seem all that thrilled with that idea though

  96. cmat0829 says:

I’ve been to plenty of yankees games.. in the upper deck. Their fans are VERY VERY knowledgable. You wouldn’t catch them discussing something so trivial, so absolutely STUPID as whether a player showed emotion or not. Not in a million years.

They would be very aware of their player’s batting average on specific counts, though.

  97. cmat0829 says:

Jim Bowden says “no way”. Reds are way better than the Pirates.

  98. twentytwo22 says:

4 hits in 1+ innings for the Pirates.

  99. cmat0829 says:

Did Greg ask Clint where JHay will be getting most of his playing time then?

  100. Milo Hamilton says:

Just put him there against a team with a bunch of lefty hitters. He’ll be playing 2nd most of the time anyway.

  101. cmat0829 says:

  102. Thundercrack says:

No cmat. Brown just asked him about the idea of JHay playing SS

  103. cberry88 says:

Well Charlie has been hittable (hit-table? hit-able?) and wild in the early innings so far this year and then has put the hammer down in the later innings.

So hopefully he’ll be his usual self during the 3rd to 6th or possibly 7th inning.

  104. cmat0829 says:

Cholly gets my early vote for SUCKY player of the game so far. LEARN HOW TO FRIGGING BUNT. IS IT THAT HARD? GOOD LORD.

  105. Patrick(ri) says:

    ” . . . Our most effective blunter.”

  106. cmat0829 says:

Well, that is one good question more than Robbie has all season, so I won’t nitpick.

  107. twentytwo22 says:

  108. Florida Steeler says:

The Pirates make bunting and running the bases seem like the two most difficult things in baseball. ALL YEAR

  109. Patrick(ri) says:

Bunter, or perhaps blunter is better?

  110. cmat0829 says:

day off does the body good.

  111. cmat0829 says:

again i dont have any answers, but just awful.

  112. twentytwo22 says:

2 xbh in 2 innings. CYCLEWATCH

  113. cmat0829 says:

too bad they took the triple away, made it a double and an error. otherwise, cycle very much in play.

  114. Florida Steeler says:

  115. cberry88 says:

Maybe but I believe Tim Lincecum is MLB’s most effective ‘blunter’

  116. Patrick(ri) says:

Wow, his mini slump is over.

  117. Radio wave says:

Beating teams we should beat. Take this ride to the break.

  118. Milo Hamilton says:

Doing some research. Wonder why Jim Rutherford bristles when his age comes up ? He’s got a young wife & that cute little boy he’s with at the game is his son. He’s 6 or 7.

  119. Florida Steeler says:

Goldschmidt is our answer at first. lol!!!!!

  120. twentytwo22 says:

Oh I didn’t even hear that. Would’ve had the 2 toughest out of the way.

  121. cmat0829 says:

BING! or should I say BONG!

  122. Milo Hamilton says:

    The Mighty Goldschmidt.

  123. cmat0829 says:

GREAT player. Untouchable. But GREAT. Yoda says “pitching around him we should be”

  124. Flbucco says:

Kingham, Glasnow, Bell and Meadows and you can have him

  125. cmat0829 says:

they could always change their mind and put it back… but doubt it. Gregory can definitely hit another triple

  126. Milo Hamilton says:

    That has to be caught.

  127. cmat0829 says:

Cutch sure does play deep CF…especially with 2 outs RISP. Just sayin’. Perhaps a slight adjustment is necessary. If I were a pitcher I wouldn’t like a high pop fly to drive in a run.

  128. twentytwo22 says:

Tainted run. 6 innings left with a 2 run lead.

  129. Flbucco says:

Anyone want to tell me that Cutch should not have made that play?

  130. cmat0829 says:

Maybe 24/7 can ask Clint: “Are you impressed by Cutch’s defense in CF lately”. And he can say “Cutch can do better. Like not playing on the warning track with 2 outs and RISP”.

  131. cmat0829 says:

If anyone says otherwise, they ARE WRONG. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION. That ball HAS TO BE CAUGHT by the CF. Period. ( i still love cutch)

  132. twentytwo22 says:

The Pirates are 7-9 when Morton starts. I thought it was worse.

  133. twentytwo22 says:

7 hits in 2+ innings. No more bunt debacles. No running into outs either.

  134. cmat0829 says:

Na, it’s Kevin Towers we are talking about. Glasnow / Bell / Lambo/ Cumpton or Locke. And I’d do that deal.

  135. Flbucco says:

When he first came up he said nobody could hit the ball over his head…

He forgot to mention that he planned on standing on the warning track…

  136. cmat0829 says:

Wow a pop fly to short outfield, and Parra camps underneath it. Neat.

  137. tomf says:

yinz guyz are too critical of McCutchen defense

    (especially Flbucco)

  138. cmat0829 says:

there’s your answer.. .just fill out the lineup card with 2 second baseman. Done.

  139. cmat0829 says:

so you are saying that was a legit single by Hill there? Was in the air about 7 seconds.

  140. cmat0829 says:

Kevin Towers just tweeted — that play by Didi just reminds us of a young Jeter, doesn’t it?

  141. Flbucco says:

Me too – he is a great player – awesome offensively and should be fine as a corner OF (right field not as good as left due to his arm).

I hear all this stuff about data and metrics and analytics but nothing about trying to optimize the OF defense…

Wonder if DK would be interested in doing a little digging on the topic?

  142. Andrew says:

Bucco, riddle me this, if McCutchen is such a terrible center fielder why was he ranked 5th by UZR and 4th by DRS in the NL last year?

  143. twentytwo22 says:

Hamels is pitching tonight which means he won’t pitch here.

  144. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Can’t think of too many things that would bode well for Pirates than to see Charlie clamp down in this one.

  145. Andrew says:

Isn’t Gregorius considered a good defensive shortstop?

  146. twentytwo22 says:

5 innings down 4 to go. 6th inning will be key since Arizona is at the top of the order.

  147. twentytwo22 says:

    Nevermind it’s only the 4th.

  148. Flbucco says:

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion – but not their own facts…

Take a look at Fangraphs Fielding stats and then come back and tell me you think
Cutch is a top tier Center Fielder and I am being too hard on him…

My larger point is not that he is good or bad – but that HE KNOWS he is not doing the job – he has access to Fangraphs and more – why would he insist on staying in CF?

  149. Milo Hamilton says:

Last night we were in the 7th by now.

  150. Milo Hamilton says:

    Bunting clinic tonight.

  151. cmat0829 says:

Yes, though Kevin Towers is prone to hyperbole.

  152. Flbucco says:

Maybe he could say “we need him to be more consistent defensively”

  153. cmat0829 says:

I wont get into that debate, I will just tell you that pop flys to center field that are in the air 6 or 7 seconds MUST be caught. Period. My eye test says that Cutch plays too deep in CF.

  154. Patrick(ri) says:

Tough when you have to pitch around the lead-off hitter!

  155. Flbucco says:

    That was last year…

  156. cmat0829 says:

I agree, DK. Cholly, and to a lesser extent Cole, need to be more aggressive and challenge hitters more…work more quickly. It’s in there, just need them to apply it.

  157. cmat0829 says:

Ha. Prado channeling Pedro there. Like a QB throwing it away to avoid a sack.

  158. Milo Hamilton says:

Not intentional grounding, he was inside the tackle box.

  159. cmat0829 says:

Well, here’s our test for how well we like Neil in the 4th spot. Obvious pitch-around to load em up for Walker. Time to MAKE EM PAY.

  160. twentytwo22 says:

One big hit blows this game wide open.

  161. Patrick(ri) says:

All these walks = respect for Cutch, also not much respect for what follows?

  162. Jandy says:

    AARRGGHH Walker!

  163. Flbucco says:

  164. twentytwo22 says:

2 on in the first Davis struckout
2 on in the third Alvarez struckout
3 on in the fourth Walker struckout

  165. Arriba Wilver says:

    “And he knows it”

  166. Florida Steeler says:

The bases loaded malady strikes-AGAIN. Batting .150 with bases loaded!!!!

  167. Breakthestreak says:

1 for 10 with bases loaded Walker this year. Bummer

  168. dennis g. says:

That is certainly the ultimate in circular reasoning. Yankee fans are very knowledgeable because I have sat there and witnessed it. Yankee fans not only don’t discuss something so trivial now but will not in the limitless future. Therefore it is not worth discussing. Further proof of there great knowledge is the unverifiable assertion that Yankee fans know the batting average of each individual player on the various counts 0-0. 0-1. 0-2, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 1-2 and 3-2. Anyone who believes this please signify by responding to

  169. Patrick(ri) says:

About average result this season (1 for10). Very strange year for the offense.

  170. Flbucco says:

How about the manager asking his center fielder to start making some plays and the first base black hole to start producing or get ready to be replaced by Lambo and Hague

I am all for accountability – but Hurdles comment on Pedro was asinine

  171. dennis g. says:

One of the people who said that was Neal Huntington.

  172. Patrick(ri) says:

Always thought averages went way up with bases jammed. Any stat geeks who can confirm or deny?

  173. twentytwo22 says:

    That’s 5.

  174. Andrew says:

Might have been one strike in the zone that at-bat.

  175. Jandy says:

There’s medicine you can take for that condition, you know.

  176. Ah, the good Chahlie.

And a couple days off gives El Coffee added pop.

    Like it.

  177. Arriba Wilver says:

“Most everyone here thinks Pedro sucks”

    Great false premise.

  178. twentytwo22 says:

    .251 overall
    .255 bases loaded
    .312 bases loaded 0 out
    .323 bases loaded 1 out
    .189 bases loaded 2 out

  179. wsamcap says:

How is this game not 10-1?

  180. Arriba Wilver says:

    Keep playing fantasy baseball, Dude.

  181. Arriba Wilver says:

  182. Patrick(ri) says:

    Thanks, 22.

  183. wsamcap says:

Russ didn’t break much of a sweat on that one, did he?

  184. Arriba Wilver says:

  185. Flbucco says:

So will some one point out that Martin jogged out of the box?

Half a dozen folks slammed Marte last night and he ran harder IMHO…

  186. twentytwo22 says:

  187. Jandy says:

    I mean, really!

  188. dennis g. says:

Wow. Three years @ $30 million. I think I just revised my opinion. Marte is a child I understand, but Martin has been around and there is no excuse. Under the right circumstances that could have been a triple.

  189. wsamcap says:

They mentioned it, without much criticism

  190. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Nothing in baseball gets you the hugs and handshakes quite like giving up your AB to advance the runner, as Ike just did.

  191. Jandy says:

Yeah, like without being derogatory or repeating themselves 100 times…..

  192. Patrick(ri) says:

Perfect way to pitch Pedro. Works almost every time.

  193. twentytwo22 says:

The offense is making this harder than it should be.

  194. Arriba Wilver says:

I think “troll” gets way overused, but this guy fits my narrow definition. Including his other name.

Either that, or he’s really Scott Boras, who I am sure “hates” Cutch for signing that contract. :-) :-) :-)

  195. Jandy says:

  196. Milo Hamilton says:

    Hey, Martin’s a minority. He’s from Canada.

  197. Thundercrack says:

I’ll be right back. I need to check Fangraphs to see how great that at-bat was by Pedro.
You know, how it is OK for a low average power hitter.

  198. Breakthestreak says:

    Where’s JHay ?

  199. Jandy says:

well, you know, after what? more than 16 hours, can ya quit griping about the same old schmeil and enjoy the friggin game??? I mean, c’mon!!!

  200. Flbucco says:

Other than hitting a home run now and then – c’mon DK – when will you write a column on the first base black hole?

  201. Wild Bill says:

Hope all thes LoB don’t come back to bite us you-know-where.

  202. Thundercrack says:

On radio Walk said “it looked like Martin thought he got that one over the fence’

Brown chuckled and said “I’ll say he thought that”

  203. Jandy says:

haha, he’s on stand-by on the bench ;)

  204. Jandy says:

hey Wild One, I bet you-know-where ISN’T the nose ;)

  205. The Gunner says:

    Ha ha TC

Keep adding the gasoline to the fire!

  206. JohninOshkosh says:

I should be packing. I hate packing. Instead, I’m listening to this game and, it’s weird, but XM is behind the actual game by a couple three at bats.

  207. Flbucco says:

So you think he is a great OF and all of the stats are bull shit?

  208. Wild Bill says:

No, but Claude might favor it.

  209. Jandy says:

  210. Thundercrack says:

    And I like Pedro!!!

  211. twentytwo22 says:

Morton goes 3-0 on the first batter of the sixth and gets him out.

  212. Jandy says:

  213. JohninOshkosh says:

No fair. NMR doesn’t chime in after work. His woman must have him a short leash. Haha.

  214. cmat0829 says:

well, it will be very easy for Clint to make out the lineup card tomorow. JHay 3B. Pedro bench.

  215. Jandy says:

Yeah, he’d be great here in the evenings :)

  216. cmat0829 says:

I say that only as a prediction, not bashing Pedro unnecessarily.

  217. wsamcap says:

Never thought Charlie could give us 6 tonight. Nicely done. Now, if he could only bunt….

  218. cmat0829 says:

YES. and nothing gets more silent gritting of the teeth by your teammates as that terrible AB by Pedro. Completely unable to put bat on ball. Even Cholly put bat on ball.

  219. Scott says:

Rx scripted GDP. Top of the order magic time.

  220. The Gunner says:

another tough night for Pedro, I guess

  221. Flbucco says:

Was not nearly as good as the one by Ike!

  222. cmat0829 says:

Great… I have something to pray for the next 4 weeks… please, please acquire a 1B. Ike just appears to be sleepwalking out there most of the time. Not gonna say Ike isn’t decent and an obvious upgade to Travis Ishikawa and Spring Training Lambo…. but to channel Clint “we can do better”

  223. twentytwo22 says:

    That’s a good at-bat by Marte. 1-2 count to a walk.

  224. Thundercrack says:

    He’s probably studying Fangraphs.

  225. cmat0829 says:

As I watch Marte battle himself to stop swinging at the down and out sliders, I’m reminded of how our beloved Tabby used to slap his thigh in a self-congratulatory way when he stopped himself from swinging at those… maybe Marte needs to apply the Tabby thighslap technique?

  226. Andrew says:

Bucco, you do realize that the available defensive metrics were never intended to make definitive statements about ability based on year let alone half a year samples.

Outfielder ratings are determined by about 40 plays a year, most plays are routine and don’t shift the numbers, so in half a year that number is 20. McCutchen’s under performance on four plays plus a average to below average arm are responsible for this year’s abysmal numbers.

For his career he is -4.4 UZR/150, it’s not good but he isn’t Adam Jones. As a team you aren’t going to game many runs by shifting McCutchen to LF and Marte to CF. McCutchen will be compared to lesser players so his rating will improve and Marte to better players so his rating will go down. I just don’t think that there is a huge gain to be made here.

  227. cmat0829 says:

If I never -have to see Marte abort a steal, then almost get picked off getting back to 1B again, it will be too soon. Ugh.

  228. Flbucco says:

And Ike gets a pass ;-)

  229. Scott says:

DK mobile app def needs to have latest comment listed first.

  230. Thundercrack says:

Yes, I think Cutch is a great center fielder. I’ve seen it and I don’t need a stat book. He’s saved a ton of hits. And I don’t care how good Marte is. Keep them where they are.

  231. cmat0829 says:

Yep. runner on 3B, one out, he just has to get bat on ball. I get it, when he swings for HRs, he swings and misses a lot, but in that situation, didn’t call for a HR. Just a lazy fly ball does the trick.

  232. Andrew says:

I didn’t either, but some nights you don’t know what you’ll get inning from inning.

  233. cmat0829 says:

in my book he does… he at least moved the runner with the ground out to right side. He did the right thing and we should have scored a run.

  234. Milo Hamilton says:

Now time for Justin Wilson to walk some people.

  235. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Lousy AB for Cutch there. No business swinging out if his shows with man at second, two strikes.

  236. Flbucco says:

While you are there see what they have to say about that awesome at bat by the MVP ;-)

  237. wsamcap says:

Strike 3 was a hittable ptich

  238. Scott says:

Cutch whiffs with a HR swing looking down 3B line. Only needed a base knock. Tsk tsk.

Walker hits the ball right on the button but right at centerfielder.

  239. Dejan Kovacevic says:

My God, baseball games are becoming interminable. 2 1/2 hours for six innings of a 3-1 game. Awful.

  240. Flbucco says:

While you are there see what they have to say about that awesome at bat by the MVP

  241. Wild Bill says:

Was out for a long time today, and now see that Kulemin signed with the Isles for 4 mil plus/year. No pal for Geno.

  242. Wild Bill says:

    Amen, boss.

  243. Thundercrack says:

Last night’s game had a pretty good pace. Of course the Pirates didn’t have any hits for many innings.

  244. Milo Hamilton says:

    Show me the game.

  245. cberry88 says:

Have to agree, what does everyone think can be done to speed up the pace of play?

  246. Flbucco says:

But it was all Pedro’s fault!

  247. Breakthestreak says:

Looks like a 4 hr game tonight

  248. dennis g. says:

Apparently you don’t want to be confused with facts.

  249. Wild Bill says:

After the last inning, limiting throws to first by the pitcher occurs to me.

  250. JohninOshkosh says:

If they don’t address it, the sport is in deep trouble. In danger of playing itself off television for most people. They could at least make hitters stay in the damn box. I’m looking at people like you, Ryan Braun.

  251. Thundercrack says:

Here are 3 things I would do right away if I was Commissioner:

    1) If there are no runners on base, the batter is not permitted to step out of the batter’s box

    2) The catcher gets one visit to the mound per inning. Way to much chatter between pitcher & catcher over strategy….and there shouldn’t be. Talk in the dugout.

    3) Replay can stay, but either the manager decides to challenge the call or not. No more of these strolls out on to the field, killing time for someone on your team to see a replay.

  252. RB says:

I went to a Wild Things game earlier this year. It was a nice reminder of why the umps rush meetings at the plate in MLB.

  253. Patrick(ri) says:

Anybody else think Martin looks like he is stiff and sore? Thought I noticed it after he swung from the heels in an early at bat.

  254. JohninOshkosh says:

#Ibelieve this game will end by midnight. Central, that is.

  255. cberry88 says:

I would also like to see replays limited to 1 or 2 minutes. If you can’t decide by then the play stands

  256. Gene-Zo says:

Make batters stay in the batter’s box between pitches, for a start.

  257. cberry88 says:

  258. Jandy says:

Is someone gonna give him a leash to do it?

  259. Andrew says:

Enforce the pace rule on pitchers, with bases empty you get 12 seconds.

I also think they could cut out some of the half inning commercial breaks, some of these breaks are all ROOT Sports ads, is that really revenue generating, but this is a pipe dream.

  260. Jandy says:

I’ll be in my bed sleeping long before that :D

  261. Andrew says:

Stepping out of box, and mound visits are good ones.

  262. Breakthestreak says:

JHay in at 3rd . Defensive substitution

  263. dennis g. says:

Nothing. The umpires have control and they would benefit more than anyone else from a shorter game and they do nothing. Either they are not permitted or they have other concerns but this will only get worse.

  264. tomf says:

    expand the strike zone

  265. cberry88 says:

John I’m kinda (very) embarrassed but with your avatar being real small I always thought it was French Stewart from “3rd Rock from the Sun”.

Only today did I realize it was Joe Strummer from The Clash……I’m glad it’s not French Stewart.

  266. Andrew says:

Look out for some retaliation next half inning.

  267. Florida Steeler says:

D-Backs announcers are wondering why Pirates don’t play Harrison at third and move Pedro to first?? May not be a bad idea–Ike and Gaby are NOT the answer.

  268. Scott says:

I’m not a fan of taking Pedro’s bat out of the line late in the game. Eventually it’s going to come back and bite, Er grab Clint on the Ass.

  269. twentytwo22 says:

    1 more mile to go.

  270. Flbucco says:

No he pinch hit with a LHP on the mound last inning…

    Pop quiz…
Who had the worst last at bat…
    1. Walker
    2. Pedro
    3. Cutch

  271. Milo Hamilton says:

    Agree 100%.

  272. Scott says:

Come on Cutch barrel on the ball!

  273. wsamcap says:

My oh my, baserunning practice tomorrow

  274. KING says:

An efficient performance by the Pirates. Marte just slammed RBI double. 4-1 Bucs. Just need to keep beating these substandard teams. AZ might be the worst I’ve seen. Mets at least can scare you some. SD anemic offense but just swept Reds.
5-1 Bucs now. Cutch hits a single in no man’s land.

Pirates should move to 44-40 & 6 games back of Brewers. The only team to worry about is SF. They have several games left with Colorado,DBacks,SD. Those teams will only get worse as they raid their rosters for prospects.
Any way you slice it, there should be pennant race baseball in Pittsburgh. Wish we could play D’Backs 25 times. KING

  275. Patrick(ri) says:

Hearing Harry Carray pronounce “Kieshnick” was one of the joys of broadcasting!

  276. Flbucco says:

It ain’t over ti it’s over King!

  277. cmat0829 says:

  278. cmat0829 says:

Hearing him spend about 10 minutes of game time trying to pronounce Bielecki backward was a childhood joy.

  279. Flbucco says:

No – see constant Pedro bashing – see very little criticism of Davis and Sanchez – prove me wrong

  280. cmat0829 says:

Lot being said about winnable games but the Reds just got swept in SD… so you do have to actually play the games…..

  281. Milo Hamilton says:

“Hey Steve, did you ever have a seedless grape ?”

  282. cberry88 says:

    Gotta love that optimism…

  283. cmat0829 says:

    oh its over. 5-1 Polanco&Marte.

  284. Patrick(ri) says:

  285. cmat0829 says:

One of the DBacks coaches is names Sherlock. Over/under 1000 times a season that Gibby says, “No S**T Sherlock”.

  286. Patrick(ri) says:

Burn some incense, or whatever, for Vogelsong.

  287. KING says:

Raise the Jolly Roger!!! Pirates smash D’Backs 5-1. Boosts record to 44-40. The big 3 Polanco,Marte,& Cutch are like 3 Billy Hamiltons.5 tool players !!!

A great victory for Pirates. Just keep rolling along. 5 wins out of 6 on this homestand. 8-2 not out of the question. KING

  288. Patrick(ri) says:

“No, but I know where the Rockford Lug Nuts play.”

  289. cmat0829 says:

I think you just said that Cutch is an average CF with a below average arm. I’ll agree on that. I don’t have an issue him being our CFer, I love this guy, but he should be forced to play a little less deep. Our pitchers at home give up way more flairs than balls off the CF wall.

  290. Breakthestreak says:

Polanco’s interviews remind of Roberto Clementes old Bob Prince interview….”I see the ball, and well, you know Bob, I hit it.” Love this kid. What a person/player.

  291. cberry88 says:

“If the moon were made of bar-b-que spare ribs, would you eat it then?……Cause I would.”

  292. The Gunner says:

I know what you mean because I like Pedro, too. If he’d only snap out of this funk he is in, the Bucs could be unstoppable.

  293. Arriba Wilver says:

  294. Arriba Wilver says:

  295. War_Horse says:

A team that wins 5-1 while stranding 24 runners on base has to be doing something right. Pitching well, for one thing, against a weak team. Walker, Davis and Alvarez accounted for 14 of those LOB in 8 innnings at bat. Not healthy.

  296. The Gunner says:

I remember those interviews between the Great One & The Gunner – you are right about the similarities.

Polanco seems like a very respectful young man & he’s quite a baseball player!!!

  297. KING says:

You know some idiot will ask Hurdle why Cutch was batting in bottom of 8th with 4-1 lead. Game was not over & Hurdle isnt some Nostradamus. He didnt know Cutch would get hurt on play.1 more of sweep for 1st of season. The Upton curse has struck the D’Backs. Trading him & the D’Backs havent been the same team since. KING

  298. And the Bucs won convincingly tonight, and, naturally, that’s all us fans care about at this point, considering what they were up against tonight. After all, the Bucs are 44-40 and the Diamondbacks are 35-51.
