Beaver Falls has lost in three WPIAL championship games in the past 12 months — two in football (Jeannette and Aliquippa) and one in basketball (Jeannette, eight months ago).
Star athlete Todd Thomas has seen enough.
After Beaver Falls lost to county rival Aliquippa on Saturday in the Class AA title game at Heinz Field, Thomas made a vow.
“I guarantee you in basketball we will win it all, undefeated we are not going to lose a game,” he said.
Thomas was part of the Beaver Falls team that was undefeated in Section 6-AA last season and beat Springdale, Greensburg Central Catholic and North Catholic in the playoffs before losing to Jeannette and Terrelle Pryor in the title game at the Palumbo Center, 82-68.
Beaver Falls finished 22-5 after a first-round PIAA tournament loss to Farrell, 82-71.
With Thomas Jefferson’s victory in the Class AAA title game, nine WPIAL schools have won three titles in a row. Seven of them have come from Class AAA.
They are Wilkinsburg (1914-16), New Castle (1932-34), Penn Hills (1976-78), Aliquippa (1987-89), Blackhawk (1991-93), West Allegheny (1999-01) and Thomas Jefferson (2006-08).
Braddock won six consecutive titles, a WPIAL record, in Class AA from 1954-59.
Belle Vernon is looking for a new football coach after the district opened the job held the past three years by Lou Rood. Belle Vernon was 4-6 this season under Rood and failed to make the playoffs. It was 10-10 the previous two seasons, with first-round playoff losses at the end of each.
