Mt. Lebanon’s Pierce opens some basketball eyes

While coach Daryn Freedman’s AAU team — Basketball Stars of America Nike Elite — barnstorms up and down the east coast, Mt. Lebanon’s Evan Pierce is enjoying the ride.

Pierce picked up scholarship offers from Wagner and Iona after averaging 15 points and seven assists in three games of the Morgantown (W.Va.) Jamfest last weekend. Pierce, a 6-3 guard, was playing the point while Sewickley Academy’s Tom Droney took the weekend off to finalize his decision to commit to Davidson.

Freedman’s team includes some of the best high school basketball talent in Western Pennsylvania, including Hempfield’s Nate Perry, Penn Hills graduate Barry Smith, who is planning to attend Kiski Prep, rising seniors Pierce, Deion Turman and Grant Latus of Mt. Lebanon, Jerome Barnes of Shady Side Academy and Bill Luther and Tim Donegan of Hampton.

Next up for BSA, which was 1-2 in Morgantown, is a busy nine-day stretch beginning July 23 in Orlando, Fla., for the Super Showcase and the AAU Nationals.
