Good morning, from Heinz Field.
Make that empty Heinz Field.
The first of four WPIAL championship football games will kick off in 28 minutes and 20 seconds — the Heinz Field clock is ticking down — and there are more players warming up on the field than there are people sitting in the stands.
If you didn’t know better and if it wasn’t so cold, you would think this is a preseason scrimmage, rather than the Class A title game between unbeaten Rochester and once-beaten Clairton.
Weather, shopping and the early start for the day after Thanksgiving all conspire to keep down the crowd. Nonetheless, there was a group of tailgaters in the parking lot, the smell of cooked meat in the air. Some things never change.
I actually felt guilty when I walked past the Greensburg Central Catholic Winnebago where several people were trying to tie down a GCC banner in the wind. Hope you guys got that banner up.
This probably means nothing, but Clairton’s team just went back into its locker room while the Rochester team continue to brave the elements. The clock is ticking — 21:30 before kickoff.
