FRIDAY NIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
Jeannette 44, South Fayette 40 — Jeannette missed its first 25 shots from the field, didn’t score in the first quarter, and remarkably found a way to win its Class AA game.
Beaver 57, GCC 51 — Trailing by 18 twice in the second quarter, Greensburg Central Catholic cut the deficit to one late in the game, only to see Beaver hit some clutch shots in the final 97 seconds to hold on for a victory in Class AA.
Peters Township 49, Shaler 48 — Emily Matthis scored 5 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, and Merissa Morgan hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 22 seconds, leading No. 12 Peters Township to an upset of No. 4 Shaler in Class AAAA.
Baldwin 71, Kiski Area 43 — One upset is all Kiski Area’s girls basketball had in its tank for the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.
Mt. Lebanon 73, Fox Chapel 45 — Mt. Lebanon controlled the game from the opening tip, defeating Fox Chapel in a rematch of last season’s Class AAAA title game.
West Mifflin 60, Belle Vernon 51 — Belle Vernon did a good job keeping West Mifflin point guard Charles Thompson-Lawson in check during the first half of Friday’s WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal game at Baldwin. But the senior took over in the second half, scoring 17 of his team-high 22 points, and West Mifflin pulled away for a victory against Belle Vernon.
West Allegheny 62, Highlands 59 — Pushed to overtime for the second time in three nights, Highlands surrendered another second-half lead but couldn’t make up for it this time, suffering a loss to West Allegheny in Class AAA.
Hampton 53, Montour 28 — Bill Luther scored 25 points and caused endless match-up problems for Montour with his 6-foot-7 height during Hampton’s victory in Class AAA.
