WPIAL sets times for baseball championships

Is there a WPIAL baseball rivalry as fierce as Pine-Richland vs. North Allegheny?

When Pine-Richland pitcher Stephen Laylock arrived from North Dakota, one of the first things he learned from his new baseball teammates was the importance of beating North Allegheny.

“At the beginning of the season we played NA at home in the cold weather,” Laylock said, “and I could tell right there they really wanted it.”

Both regular-season meetings were one-run games won by North Allegheny, but Pine-Richland has another chance. “It’s a big rivalry,” Laylock said. “We had a little bit of (rivalries) up in North Dakota but never really had the hate they have for NA.”

The two teams will meet again Tuesday in the WPIAL Class AAAA Championship Game. The WPIAL released times for the four title games, which will be played Tuesday (Class AAAA and AAA) and Wednesday (Class AA and A) at Consol Energy Park in Washington.

Class AAAA: North Allegheny vs. Pine-Richland, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

Class AAA: Hopewell vs. Moon, Tuesday, 5 p.m.

Class AA: Beaver Falls vs. Burrell, Wednesday, 5 p.m.

Class A: Serra Catholic vs. Neshannock, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.
