The NCAA has taken away 30 football scholarships from the University of Southern California, but it still has one for Gateway’s Dondi Kirby — if he wants it.
That says something extremely positive for the Gators’ 6-foot-3, 200-pound defensive back, who also has offers from seven Big Ten schools, plus Florida, Pitt, West Virginia, Louisville and seven others. Penn State, so far, has resisted.
It’s not surprising that Kirby said he isn’t concerned with USC’s NCAA penalties. The two-year bowl ban includes this season when the only berth on Kirby’s mind will be the one Gateway usually seizes in the WPIAL playoffs.
Kirby, who is entering his senior season at Gateway, has enough to worry about while the Gators chase that elusive WPIAL championship after finishing second the past three years.
Kirby is seriously considering USC’s offer, but he also likes Florida, Maryland, Louisville, Illinois, North Carolina and Iowa — at the moment, he said. He won’t decide until after the football season
Let the kid be a kid while enjoying his senior year of high school.
If USC misses the next two bowl seasons because Reggie Bush’s family was getting illegal payments from marketers while trying to keep up with Kardashians, that’s not Kirby’s problem.
