Roethlisburger’s receivers weren’t from Hampton

A recent article in USA Today made reference to Ben Roethlisberger working out at Hampton High School, which has already been reported, but it also says “Roethlisberger threw to high school players.”

But no Hampton students were ever involved in Roethlisberger’s work outs, athletic director Bill Cardone said Thursday. Roethlisberger twice watched practice from a distance, but the quarterback never threw passes to Hampton players.

“I met with Ben and we were very specific about what he was allowed to do and what he wasn’t allowed to do,” Cardone said. “He was very cordial. We worked his schedule around when our kids weren’t practicing. We’re very careful about what we do here.”

Cardone and WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley were in contact throughout Roethlisberger’s involvement at Hampton, making certain the school violated no rules, both said.
