No local schools were present in USA Today’s first Super 25 poll of the season, but a pair of traditional WPIAL powers were included in the East rankings.
Reigning Class AAAA state champion North Allegheny and preseason WPIAL favorite Central Catholic and were ranked No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, in the region.
Central Catholic’s Week 1 opponent, Archbishop Wood, was ranked No. 4 in the east. The teams will meet in a nationally-televised Week 1 matchup on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. Sept. 4 at Gateway.
Also that afternoon at Gateway, the host Gators will take on Bishop McDevitt at 6 p.m. in an online broadcast on espn3.com.
Gateway athletic director and coach Terry Smith said that while the ESPN deals are not official just yet, he confirmed that Gateway has signed a contract with the network to host the event and “it’s going to happen.”
