The rich are getting richer in WPIAL wrestling.
Cody Wiercioch, who won WPIAL and PIAA wrestling titles as a 152-pound freshman with Charleroi in 2010, is transferring to two-time defending WPIAL Class AAA team champion Canon-McMillan this year, school officials confirmed Thursday.
While neither Canon-McMillan athletic director Guy Montecalvo or wrestling coach Chris Mary have spoken to Wiercioch yet, Montecalvo said a school guidance counselor informed him on Monday that Wiercioch moved to Cecil Township with his family this summer.
“(The guidance counselor) said he enrolled two sisters and a junior who has been a state wrestling champion, and it’s this Wiercioch boy,” Montecalvo said.
Wiercioch moved to 160 pounds last season as a sophomore and was the runner-up at the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA tournaments. His 2010 state title is the only individual title in Charleroi history.
“He’s a very talented wrestler,” said Mary, who is losing only one senior starter from last season. “He’ll be a great addition to the team.”
