Going national

The Root Sports telecast of the Sept. 2 season opener between WPIAL powerhouses Thomas Jefferson and Woodland Hills at the Wolvarena in Turtle Creek will be picked up nationally by Fox Sports, Root Sports senior vice president and general manager Shawn McClintock told the  Tribune-Review today.

The game will be shown live on Root Sports and either live or on tape delay in 17 regions by Fox Sports. Root Sports, formerly FSN Pittsburgh, is now owned by DirecTV but still has a programming relationship with Fox Sports, which features a national high school game of the week.

It is one of three games scheduled to be televised live nationwide, joining Central Catholic-Archbishop Wood at Gateway on Sept. 4 and Hopewell at Central Valley on Oct. 14, where star running back Rushel Shell is expected to announce his college choice from Alabama, Florida, Pitt and Virginia Tech.

This is the seventh season for McDonald’s High School Football on Root Sports, which will televise the Central Valley-New Castle game Sept. 16.

“That’s a great compliment to not only what we’re doing at Root Sports but in the WPIAL,” McClintock said. “We’re honored to do it on a weekly basis.”
