Wayne Capers Jr. back at QB for Chartiers Valley

After suffering season-ending injuries the past two seasons as Chartiers Valley’s starting quarterback, Wayne Capers Jr. was looking forward to moving to slot receiver this fall.

But the dynamic senior will be back under center when his Colts open the season at home Friday against Class AAA No. 1 Montour.

Christian Kuntz, the apparent leader in the Colts’ offseason quarterback competition, ruptured his spleen while making a tackle in the first week of practice. The senior described it as a “grade three” rupture that required a surgery, ending his season.

In the meantime, Capers began to take snaps again at practices. His performance in last weekend’s scrimmage against Aliquippa, in which he threw a touchdown pass and had a 50-yard run, confirmed his status as Chartiers Valley’s starter for Friday.

“I’m a team player; I’ll do anything for them,” Capers said of moving back to quarterback. “It might take me a while (to get used to the position), but this week is preparing me for Friday.”

Friday will mark Capers’ first football game since tearing his ACL in Week 1 of last season – an injury that came against Montour, no less. The year before that, a foot injury ended his sophomore season at the halfway point.

Capers, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, has received interest from several Division I schools, though his injury history has limited the number of his scholarship offers.
