When new Pitt coach Paul Chryst was a graduate assistant at West Virginia, Chris Haering and Jeff Metheny were there, too.
“That was a heck of a GA group,” said Metheny, now football coach at Bethel Park.
Metheny was happy when Pitt hired Chryst as head coach. Now, he’s pleased with the thought that Haering might join Chryst as an assistant coach. Haering resigned Monday after 17 years as football coach at Mt. Lebanon, telling his high school players he was leaving for a college job.
“If he does (go to Pitt), that’s a great hire for Paul,” said Metheny, who had not yet talked with Haering. “They’re very comfortable with each other, and Chris is a great coach.”
Also among those in Morgantown during the late 1980s were Mick Marotti, now strength coach at Ohio State, and Van Richardson, a Bethel Park native who played linebacker for WVU, said Metheny.
Metheny said he plans to remain at Bethel Park, and has not been offered a job at Pitt.
