So here it is, the busiest weekend of the scholastic sports year. High school athletes in Western Pennsylvania will have no shortage of activities to take part in over the next few days.
Here’s a look at what’s on tap:
*The WPIAL Class AAA and AA swimming championships will be held over two days at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool. One of the loudest and most well-attended championships, hundreds of high school swimmers will crowd the deck to cheer on their teammates.
*The WPIAL Class AAA wrestling tournament kicks off Thursday, as well, with preliminary- and first-round bouts, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Norwin. The three-day event concludes with championship bouts Saturday at 7 p.m.
*The WPIAL basketball championships begin at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center. The Class AA girls final will be at 5 p.m., followed by the Class A boys at 7 and Class AAA boys at 9.
*The two-day Class AA Southwest Regional wrestling tournament will open at 1 p.m. at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown. The finals are at 5 p.m. Saturday.
*Five WPIAL basketball championships will be contested at the Palumbo Center.
11 a.m. – Class A girls
1 p.m. – Class AA boys
3 p.m. – Class AAA girls
7 p.m. – Class AAAA girls
9 p.m. – Class AAAA boys
*Saturday also will be the championship rounds for the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling championships and Southwest Regional Class AA wrestling tournament.
Truly quite a weekend for fans of high school sports.
