The PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships began this morning at the Giant Center.
Here’s some notes from the early action from Day 1.
At 106 pounds, Southmoreland sophomore Austin Griffiths (33-4) rolled into the quarterfinals with a 6-1 against Wilson (Easton) senior Jaryd Wilson. He will face Northeast Regional champion Line Mountain sophomore Cameron Newman.
Burgettstown sophomore Austin McDermitt and Jefferson-Morgan sophomore Brendan Howard dropped their opening round matches. McDermitt lost 10-1 to tournament favorite Devin Brown of Saegertown and Howard was beaten 15-0 by Bethlehem Catholic freshman Luke Karam.
At 113: South Fayette senior Seth Carr defeated Bethlehem Catholic Stephen Maloney, 8-3. Derry freshman George ‘Mickey’ Phillippi blanked a Wilkes-Barre GAR opponent, 9-0; Ligonier Valley junior Justin Patrick whipped Warrior Run sophomore Eric Hunt, 9-2; and Redbank Valley junior Willis Gruver edged Tri-Valley sophomore Caleb Bordner, 4-3.
Carr meets Bishop McDevitt sophomore David Pipa in the quarterfinals, Gruver and Phillippi square off and Patrick gets Boiling Springs sophomore Korbin Myers.
At 120: Ligonier Valley senior Josh Patrick and South Side Beaver senior Nathan Reckner both advanced the quarterfinals, while South Fayette freshman Mike Carr and Valley senior Josiah Hughes fell into the consolation rounds.
Patrick defeated Schuylkill Valley sophomore Josh Giorgio, 13-3, and Reckner beat Penn Argyl senior Matt Williams, 3-1.
Patrick will face Wyalusing freshman Collin Edsell and Reckner gets Matt Welliver of Benton.
Also, Ryan Easter of Bedford defeated Saucon Valley senior Bryan Israel, 1-0, in overtime.
126: South Park freshman Greg Bulsak and Jefferson-Morgan junior John Demaske each won, while Valley junior Patrick Dewitt fell.
Bulsak defeated Wyoming senior Jaquan Gordon, 3-0. He’ll face Boiling Springs sophomore Kyle Shoop. Demaske blanked Saegertown freshman Nick Monico, 6-0. He gets Southern Columbia sophomore Kent Lane in the quarterfinals.
At 132: Keystone Oaks Nick Zanetta defeated Brookville’s Dalton Zimmerman, 6-1; and Kittanning’s Jason Nolf won, 6-2, over Bethlehem Catholic’s Lee Todora. South Park’s Jake Wentzel and Burrell’s John Andrejcik were beaten.
At 138: Charleroi’s Nick Gavazzi pinned Bethlehem Catholic’s Ryan Todora in an upset, and Burrell’s Steven Edwards won, 5-1, over Tri-Valley sophomore Hunter Harner.
At 145: Chartiers-Houston’s Tanner Sutton was the only district wrestler to win. He defeated Schuylkill Valley’s Zach Homan, 14-6.
Noah Tarr of Blairsville, Phil Marra of Burrell and Matt Johnston of West Greene fell into the consolation round. Tarr received a flagrant misconduct penalty and was eliminated from the tournament.
At 152: Boe Bonzo of Freedom and Blairsville’s Andrew Doak picked up wins to advance to the quarterfinals. Bonzo won, 9-4, over Palmerton’s Zach Graver, and Doak won, 5-4, over Saucon Valley’s Travis Buddock.
South Fayette’s Grant Fetchet lost his opening round match.
At 160: South Fayette’s J.J. Walker reached the quarterfinals with a 5-4 win over Montgomery’s Isaiah Bobotas.
At 170: South Fayette’s Mike Fetchet and Jefferson-Morgan’s Dustin Conti reached the quarterfinals. Fetchet defeated Mid-West’s Alex Lieberman, 6-1; and Conti edged Bethlehem Catholic’s Nick Cortopassi, 3-1.
At 182: Valley’s Terrell Fields, Blairsville’s Scott Thompson and Burrell’s Dakota DesLauriers all advanced to the quarterfinals.
Fields won, 10-5, over Reynolds’ Jamar Henry, Thompson edged Redbank Valley’s Aaron Hook, 3-2; DesLauriers won, 18-3, over Tri-Valley’s Lyle Troutman.
At 195: Kittanning’s Zac Croyle advanced with a 7-6 win over Williams Valley’s Jonathan Rummel, 7-6; Chartiers-Houston’s Garrett Vulcano won, 10-1, over Hamburg’s Austin Bashore.
At 220: Avella’s Jake Temple and West Greene’s Cody Jacobs advanced to the quarterfinals. Temple defeated Boiling Springs’ Calvin Barrick, 9-5; and Jacobs won, 9-4, over Central Columbia’s Eric McCracken.
At 285: Burrell’s Alan Beattie was pinned by Bethlehem Catholic’s Andrew Dunn. Beattie was leading 6-2 when he got turned, and Southmoreland’s Jake Beistel fell to Lakeview’s Sam Breese, 9-2.
PIAA Class AA Round I consolations (loser is eliminated)
At 106: Burgettstown’s Austin McDermitt and Jefferson-Morgan’s Brendan Howard lost.
At 113: Bentworth’s Jake Rothka stayed alive with a 12-8 win over Warrior Run’s Eric Hunt.
At 120: Valley’s Josiah Hughes and South Fayette’s Mike Carr were beaten.
At 126: Valley’s Patrick Dewitt won, 7-1, over Southern Huntingdon’s Dison Myers.
At 132: South Park’s Jake Wentzel stayed alive with a 4-0 win over Seneca’s Adam Fish, but Burrell’s J.R. Andrejcik was beaten.
At 145: Burrell’s Phil Marra got a late nearfall points for a 2-0 win over Conemaugh Township’s Tanner Cahill, West Greene’s Matt Johnston was beaten.
At 152: South Fayette’s Grant Fetchet was beaten.
At 285: Burrell’s Allan Beattie and Southmoreland’s Jake Beistel were beaten.
Action in Class AA resumes at 9 a.m. Friday

Afternoon session
At 106 pounds, Latrobe freshman Luke Pletcher, the WPIAL champion, improved to 38-2 for the season with a 12-6 win over McDowell’s Charlie Lenox. He’ll wrestle Avon Grove junior Edgar Garcia in the quarterfinals, which begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Canon-McMillan junior Brendan Price and North Hills freshman Gage Curry dropped to the consolation bracket after first-round setbacks. Price lost, 6-4, to Solanco’s Connor Sheehan, and Central York freshman Dylan Chatterton pinned Curry, the WPIAL runner-up, late in the second period.
Kemerer topped East Stroudsburg South junior Colby Ems, 5-1. Schram defeated Pennsbury senior Josh DiSanto, 11-4. Walker will wrestle Punxsutawney freshman Kaleb Young in the quarterfinals. Kemerer will meet Owen J. Roberts junior Colby Frank. And Schram squares off with Nazareth junior Chase Zemenak.
In first-round bouts, WPIAL wrestlers finished with a 29-13 record.
106: Canon-McMillan junior Brendan Price exited the tournament after a 7-4 loss to Parkland freshman Jacob Lizak. North Hills freshman Gage Curry gets through to Day 2 with a nine-second pinfall win over Marple Newtown junior Jason Rinaldi.
113: Gateway senior A.J. Wilkins and North Allegheny Dom Forys both remain in medal mix after consolation-round wins. Wilkins defeated General McLane freshman Hunter Hendricks, 12-7. Forys won, 5-1, over Spring Grove senior Derek Carlisle.
120: All three WPIAL wrestlers are in the quarterfinals.
126: Ditto.
132: Double ditto.
138: Latrobe freshman Jake Shaffer is eliminated with a 9-2 loss to Great Valley junior Shane Ruhnke.
145: All three WPIAL wrestlers are in the quarterfinals. Allderdice senior Brian Estep won, 10-8, over Norristown junior Mikey Springer
to advance to Day 2.
152: All three WPIAL wrestlers are in the quarterfinals.
160: North Allegheny senior Ben Schweiger lost to General McLane senior Ossie Bowers, 8-3, in overtime, so he’s out.
170: Mt. Lebanon sophomore Kellan Stout is a beneficiary of misfortune, as he wins his consolation bout by forfeit. Mechanicsburg senior Joey Krulock suffered an injury in the first round and did not return.
182: Both Belle Vernon senior Adam Nickelson and freshman Drew Phipps remain alive after consolation-round wins. Nickelson pinned Cedar Cliff freshman Josh Colello, and Phipps edged Central Mountain senior Blaze Buckwalter, 5-4.
195: North Hills senior Alen Turcinhodzic wins a battle of long last names, as he beat Penn Wood junior Karon Lucas-Tillery, 7-2.
220: Canon-Mac senior Alex Campbell pinned Mifflin County junior Kyle Kahley in the second period, Montour junior Cole Macek edged Carlisle junior Hasan Alic, 9-4, and Westinghouse senior Rodjecko Christian beat Wilson junior Hunter Hatlee, 5-4, so they’re all still
in the mix for third.
285: Franklin Regional senior Luke Fleck beat Hollidaysburg senior Matt Barton, 4-1, to make it to Day 2. Canon-Mac senior Angelo Broglia lost, 5-3, to Shippensburg senior Cary Hess, so he’s out.
