HERSHEY — The WPIAL will have at least three state champions at the PIAA Class AAA Championships today.
That’s because there will be all WPIAL finals at 120, 126 and 195 pounds. There are a total of 10 wrestlers from the WPIAL in title bouts.
Canon-McMillan has four wrestlers in the finals – Dalton Macri (120), Connor Schram (126), Solomon Chishko (145) and Cody Wiercioch (170).
Macri defeated Central Catholic’s Vincenzo Joseph, 5-3, and will face Hempfield Area’s Sam Krivus, the WPIAL champion, in the finals. Krivus defeated Northampton’s Zach Valley, 4-2.
Schram made his fourth PIAA final when he defeated Wyoming Valley West senior Kyle Krasavage, 7-3. He’ll get a rematch of the WPIAL final against Franklin Regional sophomore Michael Kemerer, an 8-3 winner over North Hills senior Ty Walker.
Schram was a PIAA champion at 103 in 2010 but runner-up the past two seasons. Kemerer was a runner-up at 106 in 2012.
Chishko won easily, 11-2, over Big Spring’s Greg Barger. He’ll meet Cedar Cliff’s Chris Vassar in the finals. Vassar used a third-period escape to defeat Franklin Regional’s Josh Shields.
Wiercioch is going after his third PIAA title following his 16-6 thumping of Central Dauphin’s Colt Peppelman in the semis. Wiercioch gets Penncrest’s Joe Gartland, who used a five-point move in the final five seconds to defeat Chartiers Valley’s Noah Wilps.
Others in the finals include Latrobe freshman Luke Pletcher (106 pounds), who defeated Nazareth’s Tyrone Klump, 4-0 in the semifinal and will face off against Solanco junior Connor Sheehan; Franklin Regional junior Tyler Smith (132), who won 13-1 over Central Bucks East junior Francesco Fabozzi and gets Cumberland Valley sophomore Patrick Duggan, who edged Connellsville’s Ethan Kenney, 3-2.
The third all-WPIAL title bout is a rematch of the district finals at 195: Jake Hart of Hampton against Matt McCutcheon of Kiski Area. Hart won 12-4 over DuBois senior Landon Hanna, while McCutcheon won 3-1 over Dieruff’s Jovon Reyes.
Waynesburg’s A.C. Headlee was seconds away from reaching the 113 finals, but he gave up a late takedown in regular, allowing Norristown’s Zach Fuentes to tie the score, 7-7, and then Fuentes recorded a five-point in the final 10 seconds of overtime for a 12-7 win.
Franklin Regional’s Josh Maruca gave up a late takedown and fell to Father Judge’s Joe Galasso, 3-2, at 138.
Norwin’s Heath Coles and Greensburg Salem’s Ty Reinhart dropped semifinal matches at 152, and Latrobe’s Zach Zavatsky and Greensburg Salem’s Zach Voytek fell at 160.
The other two WPIAL wrestlers to fall in the semifinals were Central Catholic’s Zach DeLuca at 220 and Kiski Area’s Shane Kuhn at 285.
