City League preview; state rankings

Think Brashear and Perry, two of the City League’s bellwether teams, are ready to get the league schedule started Thursday night?
Brashear is coming off a 44-7 loss at Slippery Rock in Week 1. Perry was crushed, 55-0, by Erie Cathedral Prep.
“After last Friday – I’m sure (Perry coach) Bill (Gallagher) would say the same thing – we’re looking to get another game started and try to right the ship,” Brashear coach Rick Murphy said. “Doesn’t matter who you’re playing. You want to try and erase that from your memory.”
Perry won this game, 24-6, last year, as the Commodores won their second City League title in the past three years and ninth since 1997.
With several starters back, including Jordan Maben, Scott Evans and Diondre Faulk along the defensive line and Mike Ignasky at linebacker, Murphy was none too happy coughing up 44 points in the opener.
“I know personally we didn’t play very well,” Murphy said. “We were disappointed in our performance. We thought we could play a lot better.”
Both teams will be looking to replace several key skill players.
Gone from Brashear are wide receiver Deshaun Roberts (six touchdowns) and quarterback Russell Page, who threw for 926 yards and eight scores. Perry graduated 1,000-yard back Curtis Edmonds.
Game starts at 7 p.m. at Cupples Stadium.
