Inside this week’s Parkway Conference battle

One player to watch Friday as Montour (2-1, 1-1) hosts New Castle (2-1, 1-1) in the WPIAL Class AAA Parkway Conference is Cole Macek, a senior running back/linebacker for the Spartans.
Listed at 6-foot, 225 pounds, Macek has 54 carries for 238 yards and two touchdowns — hardly any of it coming after he got an edge and raced away from a would-be tackler.
“He’s a fullback playing tailback, there’s no doubt about it,” Montour coach Lou Cerro said.
Macek is also a wrestler playing football.
He wrestles at 220 pounds and has a career record of 102-23, including a 33-6 mark last winter.
Macek has finished one win shy of earning a medal each of the past two years at states.
“You don’t see a lot of tailback-slash-wrestlers at 225 (pounds),” Cerro said.
Macek started at defensive end as a sophomore and junior before shifting to middle linebacker, where he has 31 tackles through three games, two of them wins, thus far.
