Will the Jeannette football team drop down to Class A?
Tonight’s school board meeting should answer that question.
But know this: According to football coach Roy Hall, who along with athletic director Matt Lebe recommended the move, this season’s push — the idea had been batted around before — began when the Jayhawks were 4-0.
Not during the team’s current, four-game funk.
“I’m glad we were 4-0 when we wrote the letter,” Hall said. “Otherwise people would think we were complaining about losing four games.”
Jeannette technically is a Class A team, but the Jayhawks were playing up.
Hall said there are 42 players on the team, including 13 freshman.
On the offensive line, only one player — guard Matt Howard — weighs 250 pounds. Everybody else is 200 or below.
Jeannette’s male enrollment was 163 last year but has declined, Lebe said. According to Hall, the sophomore class has just 51 girls and boys combined.
“Everything’s changing. It seems like it’s always, ‘Cut this or cut that,’ ” Hall said. “You hate to see it, but sometimes things are for the best.”
