From Pitt to Pros

Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt has taken plenty of heat for the Panthers’ defensive deficiencies, but there’s at least one former players you won’t hear complain about the scheme he played in:

Darrelle Revis.

The agent for the former Aliquippa High School and Pitt cornerback, who is expected to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft Saturday, Click here gave Wannstedt credit for the rave reviews Revis received after interviewing with NFL teams.

“Dave Wannstedt has done a great job coaching him and preparing him,” agent Neil Schwartz said. “When these teams put it on the chalkboard, he recognizes the formations and verbiage. The defense at Pitt is very similar to NFL defenses.”

Revis, a three-year starter, covered the wide side of the field in Wannstedt’s Cover 2 scheme, which necessitates a physical cornerback who can handle man-to-man coverage.

“It prepared me a lot because the defense I’ve been playing in is an NFL scheme,” Revis said. “A number of these interviews I’ve been on, teams have told me it’s a benefit to me to play in these defenses.”

The 5-foot-11 {1/2}, 204-pound Revis is projected in several mock drafts to go 18th overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, but Gil Brandt of ranks Revis the top cornerback. Click here Another analyst Click here has Revis headed to the Steelers at No. 15, which might be a perfect fit, considering the Steelers are likely to switch to a Cover 2 scheme under new coach Mike Tomlin and could use a big, physical corner.

Not that Revis has a say in the matter.

“I can’t answer that question until it happens,” Revis said when asked about possibly playing for the Steelers. “Even if I did care, it’s not like I’m getting recruited out of high school and picking a college. It’s not on me. It’s up to what the owner needs, what the GM needs, what the team needs. I think I did well enough in my interviews.”
