Just when you thought boxing had become irrelevant…
Two fights into his comeback, Paul Spadafora almost landed a bout with Arturo Gatti. HBO was trying to set up the fight, but Gatti instead chose Alfonso Gomez, of “The Contender” fame, for a July 14 bout in Atlantic City.
Spadafora, eyeing a title shot in the junior welterweight division by year’s end, now is seeking a mid-summer bout. Promoter Mike Acri expects to announce an opponent by the end of the month.
Although Spadafora has documented history of alcohol abuse and legal troubles, he still has drawing power. Only 31 years of age, he has a 40-0-1 record and is one of few white American fighters with a world title on his resume.
And everybody loves a comeback story.
