Going 10 Rounds – Round Seven

Just when you thought boxing had become irrelevant…

If Monty Meza-Clay needed any motivation for tonight’s bout against Carlos Contreras at Heinz Field’s Great Hall, he got it Thursday when nobody showed up to watch their staged weigh-in at Bossa Nova, Downtown.

It wasn’t for lack of effort on the part of his World Class Boxing promoters, who had a disc jockey playing music and a video presentation with Meza-Clay fight clips.

But the Oscar de la Hoya-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight has only further tarnished the game’s image, and sports fans have become disillusioned with big-time boxing, which has had a trickle-down effect on up-and-coming fighters.

Meza-Clay holds the International Boxing Association super featherweight belt, a steppingstone title in the alphabet soup of boxing organizations. The belt is not even on the line against Carlos Contreras, who has nine losses and two draws in his past 14 fights.

When Meza-Clay enters the ring tonight sometime after 11, it will be past newspaper deadlines and after the start of local television newscasts. And people wonder why the mainstream media doesn’t cover more boxing?
