Pat Bostick replaced an injured Kevan Smith at quarterback in the second half, leaving Pitt with only one healthy scholarship quarterback in its Big East Conference opener against Connecticut at Heinz Field.

A hyper-extended right elbow forced Smith to the sidelines, where he watched the second half without shoulder pads. Smith, a redshirt freshman from Seneca Valley, was 3 of 9 for 29 yards with an interception in the first half, as UConn took a 27-7 lead.

Bostick has completed 3 of 3 passes, but for minus-9 yards. His third completion was to right guard Joe Thomas for 6 yards, a penalty which Connecticut declined.
