LeSean McCoy tied Tony Dorsett’s school record of 13 rushing touchdowns by a freshman today against South Florida at Heinz Field.
McCoy scored on a 12-yard run against South Florida with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut Pitt’s deficit to 34-21. McCoy also scored on a 1-yard run with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter.
Dorsett set the record in 12 games in 1973, including the Fiesta Bowl, and holds Pitt’s freshman record with 1,686 rushing yards.
McCoy has rushed for 54 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and now has 1,179 rushing yards this season. He has passed West Virginia’s Steve Slaton (1,128) and Avon Cobourne (1,139) to move into second place all-time among Big East freshmen. Rutgers’ Terrell Willis set the Big East freshman record with 1,261 yards in 1993.
