Pitt secured the No. 5 seed in the Big East women’s basketball tournament, and will play No. 12 Villanova in the first round at 12 p.m. Saturday at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
The Panthers (20-9) finished the regular season with a 70-33 victory over Georgetown Monday night, creating a three-way tie for fifth place with Syracuse (22-7) and Louisville (21-8). All three had 10-6 conference records, but Pitt won the tiebreaker by beating them head-to-head.
The top four seeds – No. 1 Connecticut (29-1), No. 2 Rutgers (24-5), No. 3 West Virginia (23-6) and No. 4 Notre Dame (23-7) – received first-round byes.
The Pitt-Villanova winner — the Panthers won the first meeting, 72-63, Jan. 30 — will play Notre Dame in the quarterfinals at 12 p.m. Sunday.
West Virginia, which earned its highest seed ever, plays the Syracuse-South Florida winner at 8 p.m. Sunday.
The semifinals are at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday on ESPNU, and the Big East championship game is at 7 p.m. on March 11 on ESPN2.
