Pitt sophomore receiver Maurice Williams is academically ineligible for the 2008 football season.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Williams played in 10 games last fall, starting two and finishing with five catches for 100 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown against South Florida, and six carries for 47 yards.

“We’re disappointed for Maurice but academic performance is a major priority for our program,” Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said. “We believe Maurice can achieve a lot at Pitt, both academically and athletically, and our expectation is for him to use this as motivation for improvement.”

Williams, of Erie, was Pitt’s leading receiver in three scrimmages during spring drills, catching 17 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns, including a game-high seven receptions for 107 yards in the Blue-Gold Game at Heinz Field. Williams was battling redshirt junior Oderick Turner for the starting split end job.
