Fulmer suffers season-ending injury

In what Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt called “disappointing news,” Panthers defensive end Doug Fulmer has been lost for the season to another knee injury.

Fulmer, who missed last season after surgery on his right knee, was injured in Sunday’s practice and an MRI revealed a torn ligament in his left knee. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound redshirt junior also missed most of the 2006 season with a fractured left ankle.

Fulmer started three of the first four games in 2006 before suffering the ankle injury against The Citadel. He injured his right knee last spring, which also required surgery. Fulmer had missed four consecutive practices last week before returning yesterday.

“He has a tear in a ligament in his other knee – the good knee – and he will have surgery,” Wannstedt said. “It’s just a matter of when. They’re working out the details of all that. It’s just so unfortunate because the guy just hasn’t had a chance the last couple years because of the variety of all the injuries that he’s had. The plan right now is he will have the surgery, we’ll see how the rehab goes and go from there.”
