The Pitt women’s basketball team has lost junior point guard Jania Sims for the remainder of the 2008-09 season with bilateral tibial stress fractures, coach Agnus Berenato announced today.
Sims suffered an ankle and knee injury five minutes into Pitt’s season opener against Texas A&M, and hasn’t played since. Sims, who was academically ineligible for the second half of the 2007-08 season, will apply for a medical redshirt and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Pitt also will be without center Kate Popovec (ankle) for two-to-four weeks. The 6-foot-3 freshman from Canfield, Ohio, is averaging 6.4 points per game, leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game and is second with 18 blocked shots. She sat out the Panthers’ loss to DePaul on Saturday.
