Pitt linebacker Adam Gunn was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, but his status for returning to the Panthers is pending medical clearance.
Gunn sustained a broken neck in a collision with middle linebacker Scott McKillop in the third quarter of the 2008 season opener against Bowling Green last Aug. 30 at Heinz Field. Although Gunn walked off the field, the injury later required surgery to fuse two vertebrae together.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound fifth-year senior from Kiski Area was the starting strong-side linebacker for the Panthers in 2007, when he started all 12 games and ranked third on the team with 59 tackles. If cleared, Gunn could move to the middle to replace McKillop, the Big East defensive player of the year.
Pitt opens spring drills on March 19.
