Swing-and-miss assist

April 22nd, 2010

The Penguins took advantage of a power play to cut Ottawa’s lead to 2-1 when Kris Letang scored after an unusual assist.

Only seven seconds into a cross-checking penalty by defenseman Chris Phillips, the Penguins found a scoring opportunity.

From the right corner boards, Sidney Crosby passed to Evgeni Malkin, who attempted to feed Bill Guerin in front of the net. Guerin whiffed on the shot, but was credited with an assist when Kris Letang picked up the puck and slipped a shot past Senators goalie Pascal Leclaire at 18:05.

Phillips picked up another penalty, this time for tripping Jordan Staal on a breakaway, with 10.5 seconds remaining. The Penguins will start the second period on another power play.
