After an overtime that saw three power-play opportunities and a disallowed goal, the Penguins and Senators are headed to a second overtime. The Penguins twice killed penalties, one by Brooks Orpik (delay of game at 10:52) and the other by Kris Letang (holding, 15:40), the former thanks to Jay McKee diving on a loose puck [...]
Here we go again
For the third time in Game 5, a goal was disallowed. This one came in overtime, and would have been the game-winner. Ottawa’s Nick Foligno appeared to score the winner when he rebounded a shot by Jason Spezza that bounced off goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, but officials immediately ruled that the puck went off Foligno’s skate [...]
Headed to overtime
The Penguins and Senators, tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation, are headed into overtime for the first time in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal best-of-seven series, which the Penguins lead, 3-1. The Penguins were on a four-minute power play after Ottawa’s Mike Fisher was called for high-sticking when he bloodied defenseman Brooks Orpik’s nose [...]
Regin ties it for Senators
Ottawa rookie Peter Regin scored his third playoff goal on a slap shot from the high slot to tie the game at 3-3 at 10:24 of the third period. Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson assisted. Jarkko Ruutu just drew a penalty for elbowing at 11:07, giving the Penguins a power play.
Crosby scores!
A sliding Sidney Crosby added to his dominance of this series by smacking in the go-ahead goal to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead over the Ottawa Senators at 9:01 of the third period. The play started when Evgeni Malkin stripped defenseman Erik Karlsson in the right corner boards, then crashed the net. Pascal Leclaire [...]
And upon even further review…
Video review overturned one Chris Kunitz goal, but a second upheld an on-ice ruling disallowed the Penguins winger’s potentially go-ahead goal. After a Chris Campoli penalty for slashing Jay McKee, Sergei Gonchar flipped a wrist shot from the center point during the ensuing power play. The shot deflected off Kunitz’s stick, which he was holding [...]
Upon further review
An apparent game-tying goal by Chris Kunitz, who whacked a second-chance shot past Ottawa goalie Pascal Leclaire at 18:34 of the second period, was immediately disallowed by an official because the net was off. Then it went to video review. After checking every angle, an official skated to center ice and said that, “upon review, [...]
Swing-and-miss assist
The Penguins took advantage of a power play to cut Ottawa’s lead to 2-1 when Kris Letang scored after an unusual assist. Only seven seconds into a cross-checking penalty by defenseman Chris Phillips, the Penguins found a scoring opportunity. From the right corner boards, Sidney Crosby passed to Evgeni Malkin, who attempted to feed Bill [...]
Et tu Ruutu?
Only 1:18 after taking a 1-0 lead, the Ottawa Senators scored again when former Penguins agitator Jarkko Ruutu knocked in a rebound to make it to 2-0 at 11:43 of the first period. Nick Foligno and Chris Kelly assisted. It was the second goal of the series for Ruutu.
Senators score first
The Ottawa Senators struck first in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal with the Penguins, taking a 1-0 lead on Mike Fisher’s power-play deflection at 10:25 of the first period. The Senators got the man-advantage when Mike Rupp was called for roughing at the 10-minute mark. Erik Karlsson fired a wrist shot from the [...]
