Ben meets with the media 11-2

Ben Roethlisberger’s Q&A with the media on Wednesday

ON SUGGS
“He is a great football player. He is one of the best defenders in the game and that’s what they do, night in and night out they make plays.”

ON ROUND 2 WITH BALTIMORE
“It’s a divisional opponent so you always get fired up to play it. It is a big one for us. It’s prime time and we have a lot of preparation to do because they are a very good defense.”

HOW HAS BALTIMORE CHANGED
“That was the first game of the year. We are a little further in now. We have grown offensively and defensively. It is about two great defenses playing and we have to try to find a way to score some points.”

HARBAUGH WAS COMPLIMENTARY ON YOUR PLAY
“That was very kind of him to say. I am just trying to go out there and make plays for the team and help us win football games.”

YOU EXPECT TO THROW 50 TIMES
“We kind of go out there with a game plan and see what happens. Whatever it takes to win the game.”

TOMLIN SAID IF YOU USE SAME GAMEPLAN YOU WILL GET KILLED
“Not a lot of confidence from your head coach, I guess.”

HE MADE IS SOUND LIKE BALTIMORE D IS MUCH BETTER THAN PATS
“We will see. People are billing this as two of the best defenses in the game. Our offense … we are like nobody is trying to score points.”

DIFFERENT VIBE IN LOCKER ROOM THAN WEEK 1
“I am just trying to go out and play a football game. People make a big deal out of it being Baltimore week, but my approach is always the same. It is a divisional opponent and you have to play good football. Like I said, we are just trying to win a football game. We know how good they are on defense, so we know it is going to take our best.”

WAS SILENT COUNT A PROBLEM THE FIRST GAME?
“It always helps to be home, obviously for the crowd and the noise and the communication because against these guys communication is key.”

TWO WEEKS IN A ROW WITH SAME 5 GUYS
“It’s good. Good for them, their cohesiveness and understanding of each other. They have grown each week and played better each week.”

DO YOU MISS THE DAYS WHEN THE RIVALRY WAS MORE HEATED LEADING UP TO GAME?
“I have always respected them. I am not a trash talker. They can say what they want to say. For me, it is just about going out there and playing. I consider them one of the best defenses I have ever played against.”

HOW MUCH HAS STARKS STABLIZED LINE?
“Max has done a great job since he has been back. I think he has rededicated him to be the best that he can be. He is a big-bodied guy who is strong and got good feet and can make plays. Suggs is a guy who uses both speed and power so I think Max matches up well against him. I think Max is looking forward to the matchup as sure I think Suggs is. You take two marquee guys and put them against each other and it’s a fun thing.”

DO YOU GO BACK AND CRITIQUE YOURSELF IN WEEK 1 LOSS?
“We go back and look at it just to look at some defensive things. That was so far in the past for me, I put it behind me as soon as the game was over. It is about moving forward and getting better now.”

ANYTHING THEY DO AGAINST YOU OUT OF THE ORDINARY WEEK 1?
“I don’t remember. They are a great defense and they are going to get after you and they are going to try to create turnovers in which they did.”

HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK WHERE SUGGS IS AT?
“You have to count on your guys up front to block them wherever he is. He moves around. As I said before, he is one of the best in the game at pass rushing and getting to the quarterback and being disruptive. The guys up front will definitely know where he is at and I will have him in the corner of my eye.”

YOU HAVE TO HAVE SHORT MEMORY WITH TURNOVERS?
“Absolutely, you can’t let it get you down and dwell on it. There is always the next play. You just have to move on.”

PROGRESS OF PASSING GAME OVER WINNING STREAK?
“A lot of credit goes to the wide receivers for putting in some extra work and the line giving me time. We have some young guys who really put in a lot of work and get better. They have gotten better. They come to me a lot and ask what do I see and what I want them to do – things like that. That’s a credit to them for not taking their success and letting it get to their head. They always want to get better and improve. All the receivers, and you have to throw Heath Miller in there and the running backs as receivers because they done a great job of making plays for me.”

ON ED REED
“You have to be aware and you can’t turn the ball over. A lot of those go on me so I have to be better.”

ON WR SCREEN
“Sometimes it is a call, sometimes it is a check. The good thing about is that you get the ball out of your hand right now. You get the ball in the hands of a guy who is a playmaker right away and before a defender can get to them usually. You have a couple of blockers out in front. With the young speed guys that we have, you make one guy miss and a lot of times they are gone. Mike Wallace turned a 1-yard catch into 16. It is fun to get them the ball … get it to them and let them do their thing.”

ON QUICK PASSING GAME
“It is still early in the week and we are still putting things in. I’ve got confidence that our guys up front will do a great job. We will identify, we will block and I am sure they have confidence they will get to me. It is two very good football teams. It is all about the defenses, we are just a little ol’ offense trying to score some points.”

ON RAVENS WEEK
“To me it is another game. It is an important one, but it is another game. You talk about last week, on Monday and Tuesday I was out blowing leaves. It is just another game and that’s what this is going to be. It is big game because it is divisional, but you go out and play the ball game.”

  1. Scott P says:

Even when he is right, Bruce Arians is wrong. He devised a good game plan and called an excellent game against New England……for 58 minutes. By dropping back to pass wit the ball at the Patriots 28 and less than two minutes to play, he risked a pick 6 or a strip sack return. Either one would have cost the Steelers the ball game. Conversely, all he had to do was run 3 times. If you get a first down, you win. If you don’t gain a yard you attempt a 45 yard field goal. If you make it, you win, if you miss it, you give them the ball at the 35 with less than 19 seconds on the clock and no time outs.

    THE MAN IS AN IDIOT!!!

  2. Kent says:

Yes there are times when I wonder what B.A. is doing, but there are times I wonder what LeBeau or Tomlin or any of the other coaches in the league are doing. The Steelers are 5-2, came off a masterful performance against the Pats and Ben is the hottest QB in the AFC right now and offensive player of the week. They have been to two Super Bowls with him as the OC and seem to be in position to be make another run of it; B.A. must be doing something right.

And remember, last year in the AFC Championship game when Ben threw on 3rd down, instead of the Steelers running a conservative running play up the middle. At that time everyone was lauding B.A. and Tomlin for gutsy call and “playing to win”, not playing to not lose. Now, some of the same people are saying “bad call?”

  3. Phi says:

I dont think Arians is an idiot but yes the last two minutes were a disaster. Brett saved the day with a key slap on the ball to end it. We controlled the line of scrimmage all game Why at less then the two minute mark we cant get a first down?

  4. Dick says:

Fear not, fellow Steeler fans. Ben has things under control. If the O-line can give him a little time, the Ravens will be on shaky ground. Forget about the opening game. This will be different. Max is back and the O-line is settling in. I think Mike Wallace (and Antonio Brown) would like to make a point to the Ravens defense. Brown has been so close this year and has been inches away from taking it to the house. It’s only a matter of time before it happens. No doubt you will see a different game plan this time. I look for both Harrison and Woodley to play and Hampton has an attitude for this one. We will see a great game Sunday night and the birds will go home trying to figure out what happened.

  5. David says:

Im glad to see Hampton go in this game with an attitude, cutblocks should be illegal, wonder why lord goodell hasn’t looked into that, but as long as it is legal we should go out and cut knees out of some purple birds ourselves, Steelers 41 ; Raves 13…..
