Steelers linebacker coach Keith Butler talked to the media on Thursday and explained why he didn’t take the Colts defensive coordinator job during the offseason.
Q: WHAT HAPPENED TO JASON WORILDS’ WRIST?
A: “He’s healing. He had surgery on his wrist. It was the same thing I had when I played. Back then they fused mine. They aren’t fusing his. He is going to have full range of mobility hopefully when it is done. He’s taking some time to heal. We want to be sure about it so when he gets to training camp that he is ready to go.”
Q: WHAT KIND OF INJURY?
A: “It’s called Scapholunate Diastasis. It takes time for it to heal and get full motion. It is not a very painful injury but it is a nuisance type injury you have to live with the rest of the year and try to get it taken care of in the offseason and that’s what he did.”
Q: BEING CAUTIOUS WITH JAMES HARRISON IN OTAs?
A: “He will be here next week along with LaMarr. James had a little fluid on his knee. We are not winning the world championship right now. We are going to win it when we go to training camp. We want him there for training camp and when we play on Sundays.”
Q: HOW DO YOU LIKE THE YOUNG LINEBACKERS SO FAR?
A: “I think I have a good group this year. Probably a little bit more impressive than normal with the guys we got. We have some players. It is going to be interesting. Here’s the deal, we all look good in shorts. It is almost like a beauty contest. We will find out about them when it all starts.”
Q: HOW DOES SEAN SPENCE LOOK?
A: “He is coming along well. He is a very sharp young man and he’s picking up our system as well as anybody has at this point.”
Q: YOU INTIALLY SAID SPENCE WILL ONLY PLAY ON SPECIAL TEAMS. IS THAT STILL TRUE?
A: “He showed me some things that he can pick up mentally. I won’t say that he’s not going to play. The fact of the matter is that since I have been here that we never had a rookie start for us – not Lawrence Timmons, not LaMarr Woodley, not anybody. He probably won’t start, but he is probably going to get some playing time like Lawrence and LaMarr did.”
Q: WHY DID YOU NOT TAKE THE COLTS DEFEFNSIVE COORDINATORS JOB?
A: “Mike’s got pictures on me. My wife and I felt like it was the best thing for us to stay here. I know what here. I know the players here, I know the personnel department here, I know what we are going to do here defensively. There were some unknowns over in Indianapolis that I was concerned about a little bit. I know the head coach over there now and I coached with him in Cleveland. It would’ve been convenient for me to go over there but I like our owners here, I like our whole organization here. I also know that we have a quarterback. I know Andrew Luck is a good player coming in but you cannot keep a job as a coach in this league unless you have a good quarterback and a good defense. We have a good quarterback and I think we have a pretty good defense. I wanted to stick around here.”
Q: DID OWNERSHIP ASSURE YOU OF DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOB ONCE LEBEAU RETIRES?
A: “Dick LeBeau, as far as I am concerned, can coach as long as he wants to. I am not going to be the guy who pushes him out. The Rooneys took care of me monetarily and made it worth my wild to stay here. With that commitment from them, I felt like I needed to stay.”
