Timeline of the Steelers unusual travel day to MetLife Stadium

Mark Kaboly | Tribune-Review

Because of Superstorm Sandy, the Steelers had to alter their travel plans for Sunday’s game against the N.Y. Giants at MetLife Stadium.

Instead of holding their team meeting in New York on Saturday, the team decided to make the unprecedented up-and-back same-day trip for their road game.

The Steelers Twitter site (@steelers) chronicled their trip this morning up until the team got to the stadium. I took over after that:

* 7:02 a.m. — Steelers pregame meal at the Omni William Penn hotel in Pittsburgh. That’s where they stayed Saturday night and went through their meetings.

* 8:14 a.m. — Players start to drive their own cars to the airport.

* 8:34 a.m. — Some players start to arrive at the FBO part of Pittsburgh International Airport.

* 9:05 a.m. — Ben Roethlisberger and Brett Keisel arrive at the security check.

* 9:28 a.m. — The Steelers USAir chartered flight takes off for Newark.

* 10:21 a.m. — The team plane touches down at Newark airport.

* 10:36 a.m. — Team buses are loaded up and leave for the hotel located in Newark — two buses head to the stadium while the others carrying the players head toward the hotel.

* 10:53 a.m. — The Steelers provide a pregame meal for the team at the hotel.

* 11:11 a.m. — Some players like Ike Taylor look for places to rest and relax even if it means laying on the floor in the hotel hallway.

* 12:34 p.m. — The entire team departs via chartered buses from the hotel en route to MetLife Stadium.

* 12:54 p.m. — The team arrives at MetLife Stadium.

* 1:32 p.m. — A few Steelers head on to the field at warm up including Baron Batch.

* 2:28 p.m. — More players start to warm up on the field including Willie Colon, Max Starks, Ryan Clark and LaMarr Woodley.

* 3:15 p.m. — The entire team hits the field for pregame warmups.

* 3:52 p.m. — The Steelers head back into the locker room.

* 4:14 p.m. — The Steelers come out of the tunnel and introduced to the crowd at MetLife Stadium.

* 4:23 p.m. — Steelers captains — Roethlisberger, Keisel and Curtis Brown go to mid field for the coin toss.

* 4:26 p.m. — Steelers kick off to the Giants.

* 5:05 p.m. — Emmanuel Sanders catches a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger. Steelers 7, Giants 0

* 5:21 p.m. — Andre Brown scores from a yard out. Steelers 7, Giants 7.

* 5:29 p.m. — Michael Boley returns fumble 70 yards for a touchdown. Giants 14, Steelers 7.

* 5:53 p.m. – Shaun Suisham kicks a 30 yard field goal. Giants 14, Steelers 10.

* 5:54 p.m. — Halftime.

* 6:08 p.m. — Second-half kickoff.

* 6:19 p.m. — Lawrence Tynes kicks a 50-yard field goal. Giants 17, Steelers 10.

* 6:37 p.m. — Tynes kicks 23-yard field goal. Giants 20, Steelers 10.

* 6:49 p.m. — Mike Wallace catches 51-yard touchdown pass. Giants 20, Steelers 17.

* 7:14 p.m. — Isaac Redman rushed 1 yard for a touchdown. Steelers 24, Giants 20.

* 7:32 p.m. — Roethlisberger takes a knee and the Steelers win, 24-20.

* 8:33 p.m. — The Steelers team buses leave MetLife stadium and head for Newark Airport.

* 9:09 p.m. — The chartered plane is loaded and takes off for Pittsburgh International Airport.

* 10:13 p.m. — The Steelers land in Pittsburgh.

The players drive home in their own cars, but will need to be back at the practice facility Monday late morning/early afternoon for team and individual meetings, but at least it will be with a win.
