Black Hawk down: Video shows copter spin out of control

CBS News has obtained military surveillance footage not seen publicly until now of the doomed Battle of Mogadishu.

The story has been told by the movies, but the video shows a real-time, bird’s eye view of what happened on Oct. 3, 1993, when Task Force Ranger launched its mission to capture a Somali warlord’s key lieutenants in a slum.  And, yes, you can actually hear the chilling words, “Black Hawk down.”

Eighteen Americans were killed and at least 80 wounded that day.

You can view part of the 60 Minutes report here, with the archival footage of clouds of dust and a helicopter spinning out of control. The report will air in full on Sunday.
