Small_Coast_Survey_Slave_Map

A map of Southern states that President Abraham Lincoln “pored over it very earnestly” showed the distribution of the slave population.

Using data from the 1860 Census, it proved to the president that the Confederacy really could be seen in shades of gray, and that it wasn’t a solid bloc.
