Mars used to look just like California, at least according to a NASA video, an animation imagining blue sky, some white clouds, extensive lakes and impressive mountains 4 billion years ago. Then with the passage of time, it’s a desert. Yup, from the desert to the sea, it’s suspiciously similar to Southern Cal.
Scientists with Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN, developed the video to promote the mission’s launch on Monday. In the video, the habitable Mars quickly turns into the barren, cold landscape of today. MAVEN will investigate how Mars lost its atmosphere.
You can watch the video on YouTube here. It’s really cool when you play it full screen.
