Gunsmith builds nuke reactor in his basement

A gunsmith and competitive shooter from Floyd, Virginia, who started a popular engineering forum claims he has built a nuclear fusion reactor underneath his bedroom, according to Motherboard.

Douglas Coulter, a self-described former Beltway Bandit for national security agencies, is after the holy grail of fusion: a device so small it will render traditional power plants and gassed-up cars obsolete.

Although a fusion reactor that produces more energy than it receives remains elusive, Coulter isn’t the only person trying.

Jamie Edwards, a 13-year-old schoolboy from England, just became the youngest fusioneer, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.

Last year, the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, Calif., was the first to produce an amount of energy that exceeded the amount of energy being absorbed by the fuel in a nuclear fusion experiment.
