The State Department’s Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications is trolling jihadists on social media, the Telegraph reports.
Its “Digital Outreach Team actively and openly engages in Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi, and Somali to counter terrorist propaganda and misinformation about the United States,” according to the State Department’s unit.
The team goes on YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter to battle with words and images: Osama bin Laden was a coward, jihad is no “joy ride” and al-Qaida kills kids.

Alberto M. Fernandez, the team’s coordinator, tells the Telegraph that the social media campaign is targeting wannabe jihadists. “Our goal is not to make people love the US. Our goal is to make al-Qaida look bad,” he says.
At least one Mideast expert is doubtful. “If their goal is convincing people not to join jihad then I imagine their success rate is going to be zero,” says John Rosenthal, an Al-Monitor contributor.
