In the Army’s First Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, Calif., Capt. Ronald Reagan gives Pvt. David Conover an order: Photograph women working in the war industry, historian Michael Beschloss writes on the New York Times The Upshot blog.

Conover caught on film a pretty teen, Norma Jeane Dougherty, who was helping to build drones in a Burbank factory. This is one of the photos that would help turn her into a star:
