The crater has appeared suddenly at the “end of the world,” according to the Siberian Times.
A video taken by an oil-industry helicopter pilot — along with speculation as to what caused it — has gone viral.
At more than 80 yards wide, the hole is large enough for several Mi-8 helicopters to fly into it, the Times says. The hole was found close to a forest about 18 miles from Bovanenkovo, Yamal’s biggest gas field. (Yamal means “the end of the world.”)
It is not known how deep the hole is.
Anna Kurchatova of the Sub-Arctic Scientific Research Center believes the crater was caused by global warming when water, salt and gas mixed and ignited underground.
On the Internet, people are suggesting it was created by a UFO or a meteorite, a weapon test or … well, you name it.
